DOJ Examines Rape on College Campuses (SEO) The U.S.

Department of Justices (DOJ) National Institute of Justice and the Bureau of Justice Statistics released a report today. It analyzes the nature and increased presence of sexual assaults on female college students. Sexual Assault Increases at American Colleges Sexual assault is a growing concern on American college campuses, according to The Sexual Victimization of College Women, a report released today by the U.S. Department of Justices National Institute of Justice and the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The federally funded study, conducted by University of Cincinnati professor Bonnie S. Fisher, presents a comprehensive view on the increased presence of sexual assault at American colleges or universities. http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/nij/ 3% affected Nearly 3 percent of college women experience completed and/or attempted rape each academic year, according to results. Of that demographic, 1.7 %: rape victims 1.7 %: attempted-rape victims

The study proves that in some cases, rape is predetermined. Fisher and colleges surveyed a random, national sample of 4,446 women currently enrolled at a 2-to-4-year American college or university. Statistics show that most victims reported knowing their offender beforehand. (more)

Whos to blame? Although college campuses are often perceived as safe zones, sexual victimization of college women prompts immediate attention. Previous research shows that female students are at greater risk of rape than women of the general population. Socialization factors and the collegiate lifestyle facilitate sexual assault. Females commonly report threatened contacts and victimizations at bars, dance clubs, night clubs and work settings. Students often place themselves in unsafe situations. Fisher reports that nearly 60 percent of on-campus rapes occur in the victims residence.

Afraid to speak up Fisher estimates that 35 of every 1,000 female students are rape or sexual assault victims. She says that many women do not report cases of victimization for numerous reasons, including: Embarrassment Misunderstand definition of rape Desire to protect offenders image Self-blame

In an effort to increase protection, the study encourages the aid of many university organizations such as www.virginia.edu/uvapolice/ at the University of Virginia or www.towson.edu/adminfinance/facilities/police/ as Towson University. Fisher cites improved educational programs as a necessary step to deepen female understanding of sexual assault. For more information, visit www.ojp.usdoj.gov . ###
