NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. Down 2
points to 1 and trailing by 31 pins in the
deciding final Baker game, the Silver Lake
Atom Splitters presented by Spiceworks
rallied to defeat L.A. X presented by
GoBowling.com to win the 2014
Professional Bowlers Association League
Elias Cup.
In the fifth frame of the Baker game,
which was worth three points, Silver Lakes
Bryon Smith, Chris Barnes, Dom Barrett,
Wes Malott and Tommy Jones combined to
string the last seven strikes to overtake the
L.A. X lineup of Mika Koivuniemi, EJ
Tackett, Andres Gomez, Jason Belmonte
and Parker Bohn III, winning the game,
225-203, and the match 4-2.
The finals, seen on ESPN from
Brunswick Zone Carolier, opened with a battle between
reigning PBA Player of the Year and nine-time Tour titlist
Belmonte bowling for L.A. Clippers all-star guard Chris
Pauls L.A. X, and former Player of the Year and 17-time
Tour winner Barnes, bowling for television and Internet
personality Chris Hardwicks Atom Splitters.
Belmonte, wearing his Google Glass headset that pro-
vides a point-of-view look at his release, dominated from
the start firing the first nine strikes and finishing with a
279-259 victory over Barnes to give L.A. X the early 1-0
lead.
In the alternate-shot doubles game, Barnes teamed with
Smith to defeat the L.A. X pairing of Bohn and
Koivuniemi, 261-228, to even the match at 1-1. Down by
12 pins in the third frame after Smith left a 2-10 split that
Barnes was unable to convert, the pair came back with
eight consecutive strikes to win handily.
In the Baker trios contest, the momentum swung back to
L.A. X with Belmonte, Gomez and 2012-13 PBA Rookie
of the Year Tackett defeating Silver Lakes Jones, Barrett
and Malott, 216-190, to regain the match
lead, 2-1, setting up the deciding Baker team
game.
You have to remember that the singles
game is the only part of the tournament
where youre not bowling with a teammate.
Personally, I felt these guys put me in a posi-
tion to succeed. I couldnt think of a better
group of guys who had that have-your-back
mentality.
Team manager and four-time Tour winner
Mark Baker also stressed the importance of
the Atom Splitters player chemistry and put-
ting together the right lineups in the right sit-
uations throughout the whole PBA League
season.
We put this team together for the sole pur-
pose of getting to this point, said Baker.
With a team that has this much talent it makes it easy
you could make a decision and feel confident you could
stick with it. I never second-guessed myself.
For the second consecutive year, the journey to the Elias
Cup, named after the late founder of the PBA Eddie Elias,
began with eight teams competing in a single-elimination
bracket to determine the winner. Quarterfinal and semifinal
rounds were conducted in January at Thunderbowl Lanes
in Allen Park, Mich., with the championship final conduct-
ed at Brunswick Zone Carolier, North Brunswick, N.J.

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla.
Professional Bowlers Association
Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli of
Venezuela, a 19-time winner on the
PBA Tour, notched his third career
PBA50 Tour title by winning the sea-
son-opening Pasco County Open at
Lane Glo Bowl.
In a battle between two Hall of
Famers, Monacelli defeated 37-time
PBA Tour winner Norm Duke of
Clermont, Fla., bowling in his first
PBA50 Tour event, 259-190, in the
championship match.
Monacelli, whose previous PBA50
wins came in the 2012 and 2013 PBA
Senior U.S. Opens, is hoping that
gaining increased knowledge of his
bowling equipment and lane condi-
tions will bring even better results on
the PBA50 Tour this season.
A lot of people may not know that I
really only had a basic knowledge of
my bowling equipment and lane con-
ditions until recently, said the 52-
year-old Monacelli. With the game
changing so much now I had to pay
more attention to what balls I should
be using in different situations.
Back in the 80s when I was bowling
on tour, I was a feel player and I
could make the equipment I hap-
pened to be using work, Monacelli
added. But now you just cant total-
ly rely on your skill you have to
combine the skill with good knowl-
edge of the bowling ball and how it
reacts with the lane conditions.
In the championship match Duke got
off to an early lead striking in the first
three frames but leaving a 2-8-10
split in the fifth frame swung the
momentum back to Monacelli for the
rest of the game.
I had to slow down my thoughts and
not get too anxious at that point,
Monacelli said. Bowling a great
player like Norm is like when we
were on tour togetherthe nerves are
the same.
In the semifinals Duke defeated Mike
Dias of Lafayette, Colo., who was
trying for his second PBA50 Tour
title, 225-183, to advance to the
championship match. Monacelli
defeated Hall of Famer and two-time
defending PBA50 Player of the Year
Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala,
Fla., who was trying for his eighth
career PBA50 Tour title, 236-225.

Nick Reyes Tops Youth Travelers
By Vince Albrecht
BOONTON, NJ - The dynamic duo from the Bergenfield high school
team, sophomore Nick Reyes and junior Greg Khan, didnt skip a beat,
ringing up 687 and 629 sets respectively in youth travelers competition at
Boonton, in carrying Bowler City III to five points, 2871-2830 over
Bowler City II.
Nick led the pack with a sterling threesome of 237-242-208 while Greg
followed with 208-222-199. BC II had jumped out to an impressive open-
ing game triumph, shooting 827 net behind Ryan Sweeney 224, Brittany
Hovan 213, Kelley Grippo 198 and Arielle Wallace 192, but cooled con-
siderably, dropping the subsequent two contests, 950-840 and 961-916.
Brittany did add a 199 to finish with 578 and Arielle closed with a 183.
Propelled by Frank Magyar 231-215: 643 and Lilly Sigona 201, front-
running Holiday swept three games from Montvale, 2731-2370; high
game for the latter was 10-year-old Joseph Hammer Mahoneys160.
In a position encounter between two normally high-scoring squads,
Bowler City I and Boonton had difficulty finding the pocket as deliveries
more often than not were finding a path to the other side of the headpin.
Boonton, with Randy Devitt 189 and Sean McGuire 186 the best it could
muster, managed to take five of seven points from BC I, 2434-2383.
