The Call to Performance covers the practical, political, and mental sides of performance. It covers in detail the difference between performing which is the actions of a performance and performativity which is the meaning behind the actions, relating back to these two concepts throughout. This article makes the point and argument that the art of performance challenges the scholarly article as the most preferred way to present information. It argues that a performance shows and conveys the subject of choice in a way that is easier for the audience to understand. Denzin argues that we should treat performances as a complementary form of research publication, an alternative method or way of interpreting and presenting the results of ones ethnographic work (193). This fits in with my research because it argues that instead of doing the research on a topic and then just writing a paper about it, the information is presented through a performance. This would allow the information to be given in a more productive way and in a way that is easier for the audience to understand.

The focus of my subject area relates to this article because of the fact that acting is all about trying to draw the audience on stage and make them feel what the actors are feeling in each scene. I make the argument that acting is all about performing for other people. It is about making it an experience for the audience.
Mason, Jeffrey D., Ann Larabee. The Drama of Transformation: Settlement House Idealism and the Neighborhood Playhouse Performing America: pp. 123-136. JSTOR. Web. March 30th, 2014 This article focuses on the aspect of community theatre and how the community the theatre is in effects the performances performed within that theatre. Mason focuses on the aspect that community theatre is a theatre for the people and the people who attend effect the actors within and the theatre itself. Mason gives examples of different community theatres around the world to show that where it is located has the most impact on how the theatre is run and what kinds of shows are performed within each theatre. Mason also goes into detail about how because the theatre is effected by the community around it that actors are also effected by the same things which effect how they construct each character that they play during performances. One point that Mason makes in the beginning of his article and continues throughout with is the fact that community theatres could be used to teach about the basics of theatre and how these basics should be defined and set so that everybody is learning the same materials so that a base education for theatre and the appreciation of theatre in general. This fits with my observations of theatre classes and how there might be different professors teaching the same content in different classes then the Purinton, Marjean D. Antitheatrical Theatricalism on the Eighteenth-Century English Stage Criticism 46.2 (2004): pp. 305-309. JSTOR. Web. March 30th, 2014.

Siler 3 Antitheatrical Theatricalism focuses on the book Characters Theatre: Genre and Identity on the Eighteenth-Century English Stage. This chapter focuses on the different aspects of a characters theatre and how those aspects effect the Antitheatrical Theatricalism of a performance. The book focuses specifically on the Eighteenth-Century time period and how the time period effects the construction of ones identity. In the opening paragraph Purinton states that identity is an effect of character this corresponds with my research in a parallel way. It corresponds in the fact that identity and character are two aspects of theatre that have a major connection. However, I found that character is an effect of identity. This means that a character or role is effected by the persons identity who is playing the character. The view that Purinton has on this argument would fit in with my paper by helping to understand some of my findings and how the construction of ones identity is based upon the character they are trying to portray. Riddle, Matthew D. The Campaign: a case study in identity construction through performance ALT-J Research in Learning Technology 17.1 (2009): pp.63-72. PsycINFO. web. March 30th, 2014

Matthew Riddle discusses in this article the importance of role-play as a teaching tool in helping to develop a students performance identity. This article fallows a case study done at the University of Melbourne called the The Campaign. The campaign takes a group of students through a 4 week time period at the end of a mock political campaign throughout an 8 week program. The program is designed to teach students how to develop an identity through performance. This article discusses how the case study helped to teach students about perf ormance identity and develop a students personal performance identity.

Overall I felt this article made some very key arguments about constructing a performance identity. Riddle states that clothing, physical characteristics, speech patterns, and gestures are all important parts of the performance (65). Now I found that my research supports Riddles argument that all of the aspects mentioned are important to a performance. However my research supports taking Riddles argument a step further to say that these aspects all contribute to the construction of ones character in a performance. These aspects are what make up the backstory of a character, and the backstory is what helps the character to come alive and connect with the audience. These aspects draw on what is critical to a character by connecting to how the character came to be in that point in time. This article relates to my topic in the way that it talks about ways to construct a performance identity and that we act differently based on the situation we are in. I feel like my topic lends itself well to this article in the fact that since my topic focuses on the identity construction in theatre which will affect an identity because of the surroundings which would be different than that of a movie set or political campaign. Roberts, Mark A. The Performing HillBilly: Redeeming Acts of a Regional Stereotype APPALACHIAN JOURNAL 38.1(2010): pp. 78-90. J S T O R . Web. March 30th, 2014 This article is all about the environment that something is located, specifically focusing on the mountain people in the Appalachian Mountains and how growing up there has effected how they see the world and how they act because of where and how they were raised. Roberts talks about the authenticity of the way someone acts based

on where they were raised. He also touches on the aspect of cultural identity and how where you are raised effects your beliefs, how you dress, and how you see the world. Roberts makes the point that if an identity representation rises up another will arise to compete with it. This fits along with my research because of the fact of cultural identity and the fact that there will always be one idea or one person that goes against the grain of what is common in a society.
