l Crystal Jade Mendoza Jamie Pooten Equipment: - distilled water - sterile swabs - dove soap - stone - loofah - detergent bar - NA dish In Lab our group compared bacteria on our hands pre washing and post washing using 2 different methods of washing our hands to compare which one worked best. Our group was assigned to wash their hands with Dove soap using a stone and detergent bar using a loofah. In our group split who is going to wash their hands with what in half. Before the experimemt were not allowed to wash our hands less than an hour to get a good reading. DSL Dove Soap

Questions: 1. What is the correct step by step procedure of hand washing? 1. Wet your hands with clean running water (warm or cold) and apply soap. 2. Rub your hands together to make a lather and scrub them well; be sure to scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. 3. Continue rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum "Happy Birthday" from beginning to end twice. 4. Rinse your hands well under running water. 5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry.

2. Are sanitizers/alcohols good alternatives to using soap? Sanitizers can be used in addition to hand washing, but should not be used as a substitute for washing with soap and water. Proper hand washing is best, but when soap and water arent available, hand sanitizers can be a substitute for on-the-go cleaning. Hand sanitizers are not effective if your hands are visibly dirty. The alcohol in hand sanitizer disrupts the coatin on bacteria and viruses

What is the difference between soaps and detergents? he difference between soap and detergent is that soaps are manufactured from natural materials and form scum when use in hard water while detergents are manufactured from synthetic materials and do not form scum in hard water. Soaps are made from fat and lye while detergents are mainly made from petroleum products and have many substances added to them.

4. Do you think that using a brush or similar implements in hand washing is usual? Explain. Yes if its a nail brush for everyday use or a brush for surgical hand scrubs. In surgical hand scrubs the purpose is to remove debris and transient microorganisms

from the nails, hands, and forearms, reduce the resident microbial count to a minimum, and inhibit rapid rebound growth of microorganisms.

5. What is the importance of hand washing in prevention of disease transmission? Explain Don't underestimate the power of hand washing! Good hand washing is the first line of defense against the spread of many illnesses, from the common cold to more serious illnesses such as meningitis, bronchiolitis, influenza, hepatitis A, and most types of infectious diarrhea.Hands are the most frequent transmission route for many types of infections. Pathogens may enter through the mouth, nose, or eyes. Proper hand hygiene is the easiest way to reduce infections. Conclusion: Always remember to wash your hands often!
