Part I: answer ANY 4 of the following 5 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), each worth 2.5 marks for a total of 10 marks.

1. A man uses a pulley system to slow down the falling of a box. Find the acceleration of the box. Given that the mass of the box is 7 kg and the weight is 5 kg and the string is inextensible. A. B. C. D. 2.87 ms-2 downwards 1.50 ms-2 upwards 1.63 ms-2 downwards 2.02 ms-2 upwards

2. As shown in the figure, two forces of 10 N and 17 N are now acting on a point mass A. In order to keep A in equilibrium, what should be the third horizontal force needed to be added? A. B. C. D. 18.8 N 23.8 N to the left 23.8 N 23.8 N to the right

3. A 0.500 kg stone is moving in a vertical circular path attached to a string that is 75.0 cm long. The stone is moving around the path at a constant frequency of 1.50 rev/sec. At the moment the stone is overhead, the stone is released. The velocity of the stone when it leaves the circular path is A. B. C. D. 5.55 m/s 7.07 m/s 7.75 m/s 8.35 m/s

4. If the momentum of a ball is doubled, then the kinetic energy is A. B. C. D. 2 times larger 3 times larger 4 times larger 5 times larger

5. The figure is a graph of the vertical velocity versus time for an elevator. Solve graphically for the height of the elevator above the starting point at t = 20 s. A. B. C. D. 4.0 m 16.0 m 0.0 m 8.0 m

Part II: Answer ANY 4 of the following 5 short essay questions. Each question is worth 10 marks for a total of 40 marks. 1. Hookes law states that the force, F, in a spring extended by a length x is given by F = -kx. According to Newtons second law F = ma, where m is the mass and a is the acceleration. Calculate the dimension of the spring constant k. Answer:
Dimension of spring constant (k) is [M1L0T-2] or [MT-2]

2. The earth attracts an apple. Does the apple also attract the Earth? If it does, why does the Earth not move towards the apple? Answer: According to Newtons law of gravitation, both apple and the earth attract each other with equal force but in opposite directions. It means apple also attract Earth. Since the mass of the earth is extremely large as compared to mass of the apple, acceleration of the earth due to this force of attraction is very low (of order 10-25 m/s2). 3. A horizontal force of 100 N is required to push a box across a floor at constant velocity. a. What is the net force acting on the box? b. How much is the friction force that acts on the box? Answer: a) Net force is zero (because velocity is constant) b) Friction 100 N. 4. A ball is thrown upward at a velocity of 19.6 m/s. What is its velocity after 3.00 s? Answer: 9.80 m/s down

5. You attached a rock to a rope, and were swinging it around in a circle very quickly. If you could keep the speed of the rock constant as you pulled the rope in, what would happen to the force transmitted to you by the rope, and why? Answer: Increase inversely with the distance, since F = mv2/r.

Part III: Answer ANY 4 of the following 5 problems. Each problem is worth 12.5 marks for a total of 50 marks.

1. A box of mass 5 kg lies on a rough plane inclined at 30 to the horizontal. The box is held in equilibrium by a horizontal force of magnitude 20 N, as shown in Figure. The force acts in a vertical plane containing a line of greatest slope of the inclined plane. The box is in equilibrium and on the point of moving down the plane. The box is modelled as a particle. (a) the magnitude of the normal reaction of the plane on the box (b) the coefficient of friction between the box and the plane.
Answer: (a) R = 52.4 N (b) = 0.137

2.

Two masses are connected by a string which passes over a pulley with negligible mass and friction. One mass hangs vertically and one mass slides on a 30.0 degrees frictionless incline. The vertically hanging mass is 6.00 kg and the mass on the incline is 4.00 kg. Calculate: (a) the acceleration of the system (b) the force exerted on the pulley by the string.

Answer: (a) a = 7.84 m/s2 (b) R = 1.2 g N

3. The three coplanar forces shown in the diagram act at a point P and are in equilibrium. (i) Find the values of F and . (ii) State the magnitude and direction of the resultant force at P when the force of magnitude 12N is removed.
Answer: i) ii)

Magnitude F is 11.1 N and direction is 21.10 Magnitude is 12 N and Direction is 300 clockwise from +ve x-axis

4. Two particles A and B, of mass 5m kg and 2m kg respectively, are moving in opposite directions along the same straight horizontal line. The particles collide directly. Immediately before the collision, the speeds of A and B are 3 m/s and 4 m/s respectively. The direction of motion of A is unchanged by the collision. Immediately after the collision, the speed of A is 0.8 m/s. (a) Find the speed of B immediately after the collision.

In the collision, the magnitude of the impulse exerted on A by B is 3.3 N s. (b) Find the value of m.

Answer: (a) Speed is 1.5 m/s 5.

(b) m = 0.3 kg.

The velocity-time graph shown models the motion of a parachutist falling vertically. There are four stages in the motion: falling freely with the parachute closed, decelerating at a constant rate with the parachute open, falling with constant speed with the parachute open, coming to rest instantaneously on hitting the ground. (a) Show that the total distance fallen is 1048 m. The weight of the parachutist is 850N (b) Find the upward force on the parachutist due to the parachute, during the second stage. Answer: (b) Upward force is 1360 N.
