Introduction

Introduction
This manual is meant to train recently hired technicians at Just Brakes on how to service the braking systems on Nissans and Infinitis. The automobile maker Nissan designs and manufactures the brand know as Infiniti; this means that there are several similarities between these two brands. The braking systems on both Nissans and Infinitis are exactly alike for all year models newer than 2000 made by both companies. But, the rear brakes on these cars are designed in such a way that the lower control arm blocks access to the lower caliper bolt. There are no other make or model cars on the market today that are designed this way; making them unique to work on. The normal ways of disassembling and reassembling a braking system do not apply to the rear of Nissans/Infinitis. After reading this manual technicians will be able to disassemble, clean, lubricate, and reassemble the brakes on any Nissan or Infiniti automobile.

Disassembly

Disassembly

Disassembly
In this chapter you will learn how to properly disassemble both the front and the rear brakes on any Nissan or Infiniti made since 2000.

Front
There are several steps to take to disassemble a brake system; follow these steps and you should not have any problems. 1. Remove the lower caliper bolt (caliper bolts are circled in red below)

How to Service Nissan/Infinity Brake Systems 2. Flip the caliper up, exposing the brake pads

3. Remove the inboard and outboard pads

Disassembly

4. Slide the caliper out of the caliper bracket 5. Remove both the upper and lower bolts holding the caliper bracket to the steering knuckle, pull the caliper bracket off (caliper bracket bolts are circled in red below)

6. Remove the rotor Repeat these steps for both sides of the vehicle and you have successfully disassembled the front brakes on a Nissan or Infiniti.

Rear
1. Remove the upper caliper bolt (upper caliper bolt is circled in red below)

2. Flip the caliper down, exposing the inboard and outboard brake pads

Disassembly

3. Remove the inboard and outboard brake pads

4. Now, remove the upper and lower caliper bracket bolts (caliper bracket bolts are circled in red below)

5. Remove the entire caliper and caliper bracket assembly

6. Separate the caliper from the caliper bracket by sliding the caliper out of the bracket 7. Remove the rotor Repeat these steps for both sides of the vehicle and the rear brakes are now disassembled. Please proceed to the next chapter, Preparation for Reassembly.

Preparing for Reassembly

Preparing for Reassembly

Preparing for Reassembly

In this chapter you will learn, step by step, the process of preparing the front and rear brakes for reassembly.

Materials Required
You will need these items for the preparation process: Thread Locker Wire Brush Piston Compressing Tool Dynatex Silicone Lubricant

Cleaning, Lubricating, and Other

Before you begin to reassemble the brakes, a few steps are required to make the reassembly process go smoothly. These steps are to be performed on both the front and rear brakes. 1. Replace or machine the rotors as needed 2. Replace the hardware if needed, if not proceed to step 3

4. Apply thread locker to all of the caliper bracket bolts

Preparing for Reassembly

5. Compress the pistons in all four calipers by using the piston compressing tool

6. Apply silicone lube to all of slide pins in the caliper brackets

7. Apply silicone lube to the ears of all of the brake pads

8. Apply silicone lube to the pistons and inside of the caliper body

The front and rear brakes are now ready to be reassembled. Please proceed to the next chapter, Reassembly.

Reassembly
This chapter will discuss how to reassemble Nissan and Infiniti brake systems. After reading this chapter technicians should be able to properly reassemble both the front and rear brake systems on Nissans and Infinitis.

Front
1. Put the new or machined rotor on to the wheel hub

2. Slide the caliper bracket over the rotor

14

4. Insert the new brake pads into the hardware (while inserting the brake pads, be sure to hook the springs into the wear indicators)

Reassembly

15

5. Insert the caliper back into the caliper bracket then flip the caliper down over the brake pads

6. Insert and tighten the lower caliper bolt (lower caliper bolt is circled in red below)

Repeat these steps for both sides of the car and the front brakes are now reassembled.

Rear
1. Put the new or machined rotor on to the wheel hub

2. Before reattaching the caliper bracket, insert the caliper into the bracket

Reassembly

17

3. Slide the entire caliper and caliper bracket assembly into place over the rotor 4. Insert and tighten the two caliper bracket bolts (caliper bracket bolts are circled in red below)

5. Insert the new brake pads into the hardware

6. Flip the caliper up over the pads 7. Insert and tighten the upper caliper bolt (upper caliper bolt is circled in red below)

Repeat these steps for both sides of the vehicle and the rear brakes are now reassembled.

Conclusion

19

Conclusion
After reading this manual any questions about Nissan or Infiniti brake systems should be answered. Technicians that have read this can now successfully disassemble, prepare, and reassemble the front and rear brakes on any Nissan or Infiniti product. The special technique for servicing the rear brakes for Nissans and Infinitis that was discussed in the introduction, has been covered thoroughly in this manual. Please review all chapters just before servicing any of these vehicles. After roughly 5-6 Nissan/Infiniti brake services, this technique should become routine.

Glossary

Glossary
Caliper The muscle of the brake system, this clamps down on the brake pads and rotor causing the car to slow Caliper Bracket The mounting bracket that the caliper bolts into, this bolts into the steering knuckle over the rotor and holds the brake pads in place Steering Knuckle The cast iron part that the caliper bracket and several other suspension and steering components bolt into Caliper Bolts The bolts that mount the caliper to the caliper bracket Caliper Bracket Bolts The bolts that mount the caliper bracket to the steering knuckle Slide Pins The pins that sit in the caliper bracket that the caliper bolts bolt into Hardware Mounts into the caliper bracket and sits between the caliper bracket and the brake pads Inboard Brake Pad The brake pad that sits on the inner side of the caliper bracket over the hardware Outboard Brake Pad The brake pad that sits on outer side of the caliper bracket over the hardware Wear Indicator A small piece of aluminum mounted on the brake pads that rubs on the rotor when the brake pads are low, this make a high pitch squeal letting the driver know that it is time to have their brakes serviced Rotor - The cast iron disc that mounts between the caliper bracket, brake pads, and caliper Thread Locker a red liquid substance that acts as glue on the threads of the caliper bracket bolts, this prevents them from backing out of the steering knuckle due to vibrations
