Kirby Coffey Adam Padgett ENGL 1102 02/10/14 Annotated Bibliography Inquiry: Does social media affect peoples

self-esteem? Proposed Thesis: Social media has negative affects on a persons mental wellness.
Comment [AP1]: This might be a little too broad, but I like how youre specifically talking about mental wellness. Should you be discussing self-esteem, since it is in your inquiry?

O'Keeffe,, Gwenn, MD, and Kathleen Clarke-Pearson, MD. "The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents, and Families." The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents, and Families. N.p., n.d. Web. 09 Mar. 2014. This article goes on and on about the side effects of using social media bring on. The topic that I found interesting was Facebook Depression. I know it may sound silly, but it is indeed a real thing. Facebook depression is simply when spending time on social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) causes someone to become depressed. The article talks about how acceptance is such a big deal when you are growing up and learning who you are. The intensity of the online world is thought to be a factor that may trigger depression in some adolescents. This quote is a great example because adolescents dont really know where they belong and if they keep getting shut out they feel like they are alone. Depression is a condition of mental disturbance characterized by depression to a greater degree than seems warranted by the external circumstances, typically with lack of energy and difficulty in maintaining concentration or interest in

life(Depression). The fact that in the definition depression is described as having mental disturbance proves that depression deals with your mental wellness.

Comment [AP5]: Is this a citation? Comment [AP6]: I dont this needs to be proven.

Smeesters, Dirk, and Naomi Mandel. "The Self." JSTOR. N.p., n.d. Web. 09 Mar. 2014. I picked this article because it deals with a womens self-esteem in relations to looking at other womens photos. Self-esteem is defined as a realistic respect for or favorable impression of oneself; self-respect(Self-esteem). Now this definition may be describing the positive effect, but you can also have bad self-esteem. The article says that women were less satisfied with their own physical appearance after they viewed advertisements featuring thin, attractive models. I agree with this statement because every woman has something about herself that they would want to change and when you see someone that looks a way that you wish to look you cannot help but to start criticizing your own body. Having bad self-esteem can affect your mind and how you think. In your mind, you may think because you arent a certain size you cannot do certain things but in reality you can. But, your mind will not let you think that way because you have that image of yourself in your head.

Comment [AP7]: This is not a journal.

Comment [AP8]: Is this how it is defined in the source, or are you pulling from a dictionary? Comment [AP9]: Use the writers name.

Comment [AP10]: Good, I like how youre engaging the conversation here.

Rosen, L.D, K Whaling, S Rab, L.M Carrier, and N.A Cheever. "Is Facebook Creating ''idisorders''? the Link between Clinical Symptoms of Psychiatric Disorders and Technology Use, Attitudes and Anxiety." Computers in Human Behavior. 29.3 (2013): 1243-1254. Print. This is a great article for my inquiry because it goes into mass detail about personality disorders and anxiety relating to social media. I want to focus on the anxiety

part. Anxiety is distress or uneasiness of mind caused by fear of danger or misfortune(Anxiety). The article talks about a study that was done and people of all ages were asked how anxious they get when they could not check their technologies (social media sites). It was found that younger people show more anxiety than older people. Anxiety about missing text messages predicted two disorders (antisocial and paranoid), anxiety about not checking Facebook predicted three (narcissism, antisocial and compulsive), and anxiety about not checking personal e-mail predicted reduced signs of antisocial disorder but anxiety about not checking work or school e-mail predicted more signs of compulsive disorder. The way I see it is the more you are involved in technology (social media) the more anxious you will be about what is going on.
Comment [AP11]: Interesting.

"The Antisocial Effects of Social Media." New York Times. (2012). Print. Though this article is short I found it to be very relevant to my topic. There is a point made that, Social media enable us to communicate but replace face-to-face time with others and impede having real connections. What I like about this quote is that it is saying even though you are interacting with people online you are still missing out on essential skills like face-to-face communication. The dictionary defines antisocial as unwilling or unable to associate in a normal or friendly way with other people(Antisocial). This does not really apply to what the article was talking about what I wanted to put it here so everyone would know the true definition.

Comment [AP12]: Author name?

Comment [AP13]: Which dictionary?

"Cyberbulling takes toll in an instant." USA Today n.d.: Academic Search Complete. Web. 25 Feb. 2014.

I chose this article to sum up all the articles I have used and apply them to life. As time goes on social media is rapidly growing. With that technology growing, kids are finding ways to bully kids through the Internet. Gale Wilkins talks about how with children years 8-15,bullying ranks higher than violence. At first I was shocked when reading this but the more I thought about it the more it made sense. Kids can now go on the Internet under a fake name and bully a kid anytime they want. They dont have to wait for school and if they dont use their name they cant get blamed. This causes kids self esteem to plummet. It makes kids feel depressed because they feel like they are worth nothing and in some cases kids take extreme measures to get away from the bullying. Kids also become anxious about what the bullies will say next. Later in the paper Scott Wolfe talks about how even though he is 46 years old he still gets flashbacks and wakes up in the middle of the night feeling like he is fleeing from [his] tormentors.
Comment [AP14]: Higher in what sense?

Kirby, I think youve done some good research here. the information seems very relevant to your thesis and your inquiry. I like that you are dealing with anxiety, and I wonder if that is what youll predominately focus on in your research paper. I think it is okay that you are looking at other mental disorders, but I do wonder if it would serve the paper better if you just stick with one disorder or issue. So if your paper focused on anxiety, that would bring a greater sense of focus. Again, I think youve done a good job here with your annotations, but I would like to see more of your voice and your analysis. You didnt really need all the dictionary.com definitions. Instead, really jump in the conversation.
