Simple Sentences A simple sentence has the most basic elements that make it a sentence: a subject, a verb, and a completed thought. Examples of simple sentences include the following: 1. Atif waited for the train. 2. The train was late. 3. Atif and Ali play cricket every afternoon. 4. The girl ran into her bedroom. 5. I looked for Mary and Samra at the bus station. 6. Mary and m arrived at the bus station before noon and left on the bus before I arrived. 7. Some students like to study in the mornings. 8. Juan and saad play football every morning. 9. Atif goes to the library and studies every day. 10. I wake up early in the morning. 2. Compound Sentences A compound sentence refers to a sentence made up of two independent clauses (or complete sentences) connected to one another with a coordinating conjunction. Coordinating conjunctions are easy to remember if you think of the words "FAN BOYS":

Examples of compound sentences include the following: 1. Arif waited for the train, but the train was late. 2. I looked for samra and mary at the bus station, but they arrived at the station before noon and left on the bus before I arrived. 3. Mary and Samra left on the bus before I arrived, so I did not see them at the bus station.. 4. I think I will buy the red car or I will lease the blue one. 5. I really want to go to work but I am too sick to drive. 6. I am counting my calories yet I really want dessert. 7. He ran out of money, so he had to stop playing poker. 8. They got there early and they got really good seats. 9. There was no ice cream in the freezer nor did they have money to go to the store. 10,she did not cheat on the test, for it was not the right thing to do.

3. Complex Sentences A complex sentence is made up of an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses connected to it. A dependent clause is similar to an independent clause, or complete sentence, but it lacks one of the elements that would make it a complete sentence. Examples of dependent clauses include the following:

The man who sold my dad the car is shifty. The movie that I like a lot is out on DVD now. Though he was very rich, he was still very unhappy. She returned the computer after she noticed it was damaged. When the cost goes up, customers buy less clothing. As she was bright and ambitious, she became manager in no time. Wherever you go, you can always find beauty. The movie, though very long, was still very enjoyable. Evergreen trees are a symbol of fertility because they do not die in the winter. The actor was happy he got a part in a movie although the part was a small one.

4.COPOUND-COMPLEX Instructions: The following sentences are made up of two independent clauses with one or more dependent clauses. You are to identify the clauses telling what kind each is. The choices are independent clause, noun clause, adjective clause or adverb clause. 1. John went to school, but James remained at home because he had a sore throat.

2. Since we had gone only a mile from camp, we could return before dark, and we would not become lost. 3. After the tornado had hit, my house was gone, but my neighbor's house was not touched. 4. Mary heard the frightening noise again, and the sound was one that would frighten the bravest of people. 5. The route can be changed, but I know several people who will not like the change. 6. Dr. Mathews did what could be done, but it simply was not enough to save his life 7 . If he changes his mind, we shall know for sure that Joe has learned his lesson, but only time will tell. 8. Those clouds promise rain; we should hurry before we get caught in a flash flood. 9. Here is the money that I owe you, and I am happy to be free of debt. 10. Were you ever in a storm that was full of lightning, or don't you recall?
