Activity 1: Understanding the Use of When and While matching activity.

Pre-Stage: What were you doing when SS-T you heard about 9/11? Ask students to respond and write their answers on the board. Draw a line showing continuing action to represent what the students were doing and an X on the line to represent the moment they heard about 9/11. Explain that the simple past is used to talk about complete actions in the past, while the progressive is used for actions that were continuous or inprogress. During Stage: Look at page 18 in the SS-T textbook. Go over grammar point about when and while. Explain that when typically signals the use of simple past, and while typically signals the use of past progressive. Students will match the example SS-SS

Activity 2: Crime Scene Investigation

Pre-Stage: Divide the students into 2 SS-T groups. Ask one of the groups to be special volunteers. Write the word alibi on the board and explain what it means. Explain that a crime that has been committed a local bank was robbed. The volunteer group is the suspects and SS-SS the rest of the class is investigators. The suspects will discuss their alibi while the investigators come up with questions to ask them. Remind students to use the simple past and past progressive in their questions. As the investigator group prepares their SS-SS questions, the suspects will prepare their alibi. They should come up with as detailed an alibi as possible so that they will be prepared for any questions the investigators may ask them. During Stage: Each suspect will be interviewed by a member of the investigator group. Post-Stage: Class comes together to compare the stories of the suspects. If the answers to the questions line up, they will be proven innocent. If not, they will be proven guilty. (Tangible Outcome): Notes taken by students SS-T

Materials: Textbooks Anticipated Problems & Suggested Solutions: Students may have trouble forming questions using both the simple past and the past progressive. If this occurs, T will provide students with a few examples. Contingency Plans (what you will do if you finish early, etc.): If we finish early, students will complete a grammar activity in the workbook.
