I
t seems that a new standard of accept-
ability has emerged when it comes to
how one treats any mention of Israel,
especially on college campuses.
Te attempted delegitimzation of Israel
seems to be popping up everywhere, at a time when Israels
cultural creativity is o the charts. Israels doctors have won
important prizes in the medical development eld and Israel is
still one of the few countries in the world that have launched
a satellite into space. And Israel is always the rst to rush to set
up a eld hospital when another country is in need.
Having recently returned from the AIPAC Conference, I was
blown away by the amazing technological advancements Israel is
putting forth to help the world, not just the Jews. Amir Beeri
and Camero Tech has created a hand held radar that sees through
walls in real time. It has already been used on intelligence
missions and in law enforcement here in the United States and
has saved countless lives. Amir Peleg, Founder and CEO of
TaKaDu, is using advanced mathematics and software to increase
eciency of water networks across the world. In monitoring for
leaks and constantly checking the water quality, TaKaDu is cur-
rently helping Israel, Brazil, Chile, Australia and parts of Europe
save water and energy. Ronen Gadot of ElMinda is working on
mapping the network of how the brain responds to images,
diagnosing everything from developmental disorders to brain
injuries. And Erez Naaman of OrCam has created a tiny camera
that attaches to the glasses of people with severe visual impair-
ments. Te camera indiscriminately reads everything from labels
to the newspaper into the persons ear, helping them to main-
tain a sense of dignity when doing anything from reading a
restaurant menu to a label in the grocery store.
Despite all the eorts to question Israels right to exist,
despite the terror, constant rocket attacks, boycotts and divest-
ment and even as the highest levels of anti- Semitism since
1939 are raging, as supporters of Israel, we must adopt a no
tolerance policy when it comes to any kind of eort to dele-
gitimize Israel.
We must remain vigilant in maintaining our focus and
asserting with strength and resolve that Israel is a humane, eth-
ical and compassionate country at every turn. Am Yisrael Chai,
together we arm our love for the State of Israel and the Peo-
ple of Israel now and forevermore!
Susan, Atara, Micah and Elan join me in wishing you a
relaxing (and hopefully warm) summer.

uring one of my education classes
in rabbinical school, I remember
studying about the idea of hid-
den curriculum. In a nutshell, hidden cur-
riculum consists of the lessonsvalues, concepts and
informationstudents learn that are often unintended, or at
least unconsciously transmitted.
Over the last several years, CSZ volunteers and profession-
als alike have been working hard to reveal the hidden curric-
ula within our own Religious School and to ensure that
students are learning exactly what we want them to learn (as re-
ected in our Mission and Vision statements). Tis summer,
thanks to the incredible generosity of visionary Jewish leader,
philanthropist and cherished CSZ member Mandell Bill
Berman, as well as the extraordinary dedication of our CSZ
ocers, Board of Trustees, and Advisory Council on Educa-
tion and Youth, construction will begin on the new Berman
Center for Jewish Education at Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
Our award-winning, cutting-edge, innovative Religious School
will now be housed in a center for learning that reects our
mission, our values, and our desire to communicate to our chil-
dren and their families (as well as adult learners) in ways both
subtle and overt: You are important to us; the Jewish future is
important to us; and Judaism is to be both loved and lived.
Tere might be no more important messages we can instill in
our children and in our young families, and we are deeply
grateful to Mr. Berman for the opportunity to create a space of
learning that reects our vision and our passion. Te future
looks bright at Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
I look forward to celebrating with you the creation of the
new Berman Center. More than that, though, I look forward
to partnering with you to continue to make Congregation
Shaarey Zedek the leader in Jewish learning both locally and
nationally. Dont let our incredible success be a secret: share
the excitement with your friends. May we go now and always
from strength to strength.

Have you prayed today?
Coming to daily morning and/or evening services may fit
perfectly into your day. Your attendance IS important,
even if you are only able to attend periodically. Fellow
congregants who are reciting kaddish for a recently
departed loved one, or a yearly yahrzeit, rely on CSZ for
their communal support.
Going to minyan every day allows me to say kaddish for my
mom, a promise I made to her. But because I go, it allows
others to honor their loved ones as well.
-Philip Arnold
Please join us. Minyan times are listed online, in the

I
will now take a moment to
discuss this past years ac-
complishments and steps we
are taking to address current chal-
lenges. Significant notable accomplishments in-
clude the engagement of our new Hazzan David
Propis, utilization of live-streaming broadcast ca-
pabilities for all worship services made possible by
the Dr. Richard and Sharon (zl) Brown Fund, in-
stallation of a state-of-the-art sound system in our
sanctuary funded by our Sisterhood under the lead-
ership two consecutive Sisterhood Presidents
Linda Cohen and Robin Lash, and the founding of
the Berman Center for Jewish Education, thanks to
an extraordinary gift by Bill and Madeline Berman.
The generosity of the Davidson Foundation contin-
ues to be a source of sustaining financial support, as
this year, they have again given a significant grant
for which I express our appreciation.
It has truly been a year of thanks and gratitude
for the generosity and kindness of our members has
been considerable.
The Morris and Beverly Baker Foundation spon-
sors our distinguished Scholar-in-Residence Shab-
baton and the Sidney Katzman Memorial Fund
brings us the joyous and unrivaled Purim Extrava-
ganza. This year, we enjoyed the Tel Aviv Cantorial
Institute concert thanks to the generosity of Dr.
George and Joyce Blum and the Betty Fishman Me-
morial Fund.
It is my pleasure to announce that the Peter and
Clara Weisberg Concert Fund is sponsoring a fab-
ulous concert series Propis & Friends each with
a different theme. The first Propis & Friends
Bimah to Broadway will take place here on June
16th.
On behalf of the entire congregation, I give
thanks to all who have provided financial support.
I would like to place particular emphasis on those
who have elected to pay membership dues at a Pre-
mium Level. Your annual gifts sustain our congre-
gation as there remain many individuals and
families who suffer hardship and are unable to pay
dues or tuition. Your compassion for those less for-
tunate and the high value you place on synagogue
membership allow us to continue the policy that no
one shall ever be turned away from Congregation
Shaarey Zedek because of an inability to pay.
Consideration for others in difficult circum-
stances was also evident as Henrietta and Alvin
Weisberg purchased hundreds of copies of Mahzor
Lev Shalem to make available during the High Holy
Days for those for whom the expenditure for the
new book would have been a hardship.
On behalf of the congregation I also extend my
thanks to all of you who volunteer your time and
talents to the betterment of our Shul. Thank you to
our Sisterhood, Mens Club, Seniors, Endowment
Board, and Cemetery Board. Each of these valuable
groups enables our synagogue to thrive. Thank you
also to all who work on our committees; note that
the newly formed Social Action committee co-
chaired by Micki Grossman and Adam Finkel has
organized numerous opportunities for Tikkun Olam
projects.
I thank the At-Large-Members of the Executive
Board: Jeri Fishman, Janice Stoneman, and Rick
Cohen. The three of them spend countless hours on
their synagogue responsibility portfolios. Jeris in-
cludes Programming and Communications. High-
lights this year on the programming side were the
Annual CSZ Soiree in October and the Young Artist
Showcase, a project conceived and brought to
fruition by Jeri and her committee this past January
and will take place again just prior to Chanukah.
On the communications side kudos to the entire
committee for creating the website with special
thanks to volunteer Bryan Elkus for designing the
site.
Janices portfolio includes Membership Sunshine
& Support a title which may not do justice to the
scope of her undertakings, which include all as-
pects of relationship-building among the member-
ship. Shes created Me and My Preschooler, the
Shiva Support and Bereavement Volunteer Corps
and now works to create opportunities for members
to interact with our clergy in smaller group settings.
Ricks portfolio includes Dues and Tuition and
Religious Programming and Services. Highlights
from the year include an expanded Premium Dues
recognition program, sound planning and live-
streaming initiatives.
At this time I also recognize and thank Syna-
gogue Vice-President and Secretary Rob Goodman,
whose portfolio includes in-house catering. I extend
gratitude to Vice President and Treasurer Larry

A Message from the President, Continued
Nemer who works on all issues that the synagogue
faces. Hes working closely with architects on the
Berman Center for Jewish Education and will shortly
show renderings and discuss the exciting plans here
tonight.
As we plan for the future, our clergy is front and
center. Rabbi Joseph Krakoff, our Mara DAtra,
Rabbi Aaron Starr, our Director of Education, Haz-
zan David Propis and our Assistant Cantor Leonard
Gutman continue to provide beautiful and inspiring
worship services and learning opportunities. We ap-
preciate all that they do to continue Shaarey
Zedeks legacy of outstanding rabbinic and cantor-
ial excellence.
The legacy of the late Rabbi Irwin Groner will be
remembered with the upcoming Rabbi Irwin
Groner Distinguished Speaker Series.
As Rabbi Krakoff noted during his Yiskor Sermon,
his Interfaith work with Catholic Archbishop Vi-
gneron continues to be an important aspect of his
rabbinate. In fact, in addition to the dialogue series
last fall at The Maple Theater with the Archbishop,
just last week Rabbi Krakoff participated with the
Archbishop and others in the Religious Leaders
Forum addressing ways to curb violence in Metro
Detroit.
Rabbi Starr has similarly been in dialogue with
other clergy and educators exploring excellence in
education as he works on plans for the Berman Cen-
ter for Jewish Education. Rabbi Starr works closely
with parent lay-leaders and supervises the profes-
sional staff of the school. This past summer two new
professionals were added to our roster: Allison Gut-
man, Assistant Director of Education & Youth and
David Lerner, Director of Youth and Young Adult
Programming. Our USY recently won an award at
the regional convention.
Featuring our children and youth is always a
treat. Our clergy recently included all of our chil-
dren in a recent TGIS service and we all are looking
forward to an encore.
All of the many wonderful services, programs,
life-cycle events whether joyous or somber, include
time and effort of our dedicated Shaarey Zedek staff.
Nothing could get done without their behind-the-
scenes support day after day. On behalf of the entire
congregation I thank our Executive Director Shira
Shapiro who skillfully leads her staff which in-
cludes:
Ron Miller, Controller
Tobye Bello, Program Director
Keith Armbruster, Facilites (along with his staff,
Larry, Bob, Alan, and Adrian)
Shelley Golsky, Office Manager
Gail Goodstein, Receptionist
Kelly Woerner, Administrative Assistant
Sharon Fountain, Bookkeeper
Karen Davis, Administrative Assistant
Janet Pont, Director of Member Support
Services
Janet Pont is in her 58th year as an employee at
Shaarey Zedek and tomorrow will celebrate her
75th birthday! We all wish you a happy birthday
and many, many more may you make it 120 to
celebrate your 103rd year as an employee!
We will all have a chance to show our appreci-
ation when Janet and her husband Herb will be
honored on Thursday, May 29th at the JTS Gala.
When the JTS Chancellor, Arnold Eisen, was here
in March, he said, during a lunch and learn in the
Chapel, that the traditional synagogue business
model that is the membership model may not
be sustainable. He spoke about the unique circum-
stances of Judaism in the App Generation and our
need for a new approach.
The Executive Director of Federations NextGen,
Miryam Rosenzweig, has on two occasions made
presentations to our Board demonstrating that the
younger generations are not joiners and that
NextGen is successful in large part because they are
organized in a way that appeals to the prevailing
sensibilities and interests of those generations.
Whether a persons interest may be in Jewish
learning, worship services, social action or social-
ization within the community, NextGen success-
fully gets people together. Shaarey Zedek is proud to
have hosted NextGen events in our building and
looks forward to doing more.
While this tactic may help position us with the
youngest adult demographic, it will not address the
challenge of continued resignations.
During the past decade-and-a-half, we have lost
a significant number of members. However, we are
taking steps to curb the rate of loss. We have been
looking at national examples. Jeri Fishman and I
along with Rabbi Starr and Hazzan Propis, and Mar-
jorie Saulson attended the Centennial Convention
of the USCJ in the fall where the focus was on

A Message from the President, Continued
organized personal outreach and community building.
Currently, our Board, staff and clergy are explor-
ing ways to create opportunities for our members to
connect with one another. It is by strengthening the
personal connections among our members, that we
that further strengthen the synagogue as a whole.
A NextGen-style platform may be helpful in
reaching other age-groups, including Empty-Nesters
(the JCC of New York note not a synagogue - is
creating a clearing house for events, learning, sprir-
itual, and social action opportunities in that area for
this often overlooked age segment). Jeri Fishman
along with Bob and Sue Rollinger have been meet-
ing with Rabbi Krakoff and Hazzan Propis to ad-
dress the needs of the empty nesters in our
congregation.
The teen segment is also in need of support and
expansion within the synagogue. Just this year,
David Lerner, reinstituted USY here and, as I men-
tioned earlier, won an award at a Regional Confer-
ence. Unfortunately, the enrollment in the
community supplemental high school program
ATID has fallen significantly year-after-year follow-
ing its creation. Fortunately, however, we have a
core of committed parents, known as ACEY that has
been working with Rabbi Starr and Larry Nemer to
increase teen involvement and enhance educa-
tional, social and service options for our teens. I
would like to thank the ACEY group for their time
and dedication.
With the many current challenges to the tradi-
tional synagogue organizational model, some Con-
servative synagogues around the country have hired
Outreach Rabbis to connect with people in the
community, in the hopes that positive personal in-
teraction will result in good will that could translate
to participation or monetary donations, even if not
dues-paying membership.
In other parts of the country, some shuls are pro-
viding various types of membership or a-la-carte
membership. A trend developing on both coasts is
families opting to have bnai mitzvah services at lo-
cations other than in synagogues. In those areas,
there are free-lance clergy that are available to pre-
side over these and other life-cycle events just as
clergy in our community may conduct funeral serv-
ices for non-members. Our Board of Trustees is cur-
rently addressing this topic as we all place a high
value on membership and seek to make certain that
there is a distinct value to membership as that is our
business model.
While synagogue life in the App Generation
presents challenges, it also presents opportunities.
For example, the the live-streaming and archiving of
the live-streamed services will allow people to
watch Rabbi Krakoffs and Rabbi Starrs sermons,
just by going to the website. Similarly, visitors to the
site can listen to our Hazzan daven Musaf or Kol
Nidre. Perhaps these sermons and services will in-
spire people to come in-person or to support our
congregation. After all, the core value that perme-
ates all we do is the desire to learn and grow spiri-
tually together as a Kehila Kedosha a sacred
community.
I would like to close my comments by again
thanking Bill Berman not only for his extraordinary
financial generosity but also for his enthusiastic and
optimistic passion for synagogue life. Bill was on
the committee that selected this site and this design
that has lasted 50 years. And now, it is The Berman
Center for Jewish Education that will be the corner-
stone for the next 50 years.
Thank you Bill and thank you all who have at-
tended this 153rd Annual Meeting today.

Passover Party
Game Day
Thursday
Our monthly Game Day Thursdays have been full of groups having lunch, socializing
and playing their favorite tabletop games. Come and play! Bring your friends to our
next event, May 15 at 11:00 a.m.
Families with young children gathered at the Huntington Woods Library
to sing, play and make crafts, all with a Passover theme. Kermit the Frog
stopped by to help out!
