Cesare is gone, believed dead, and Cleopatra, locked up by her brother, no longer plays the confident vixen. The piece begins mournful, but the middle section switches to anger and determination as Cleopatra vows to punish Tolomeo, King of Egypt, in the afterlife. The opera Giulio Cesare (1724) depicts the momentous meeting of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt.
