The piece begins mournful, but the middle section switches to anger and determination as Cleopatra vows to punish Tolomeo, King of Egypt, in the afterlife. The opera Giulio Cesare (1724) depicts the momentous meeting of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt. Handel works within the conventions of opera seria, a structurally formal and decorous genre built primarily around a series of solo arias. The role of Cesare is written for a castrato men who had been surgically altered before puberty to retain the vocal purity of a boys high notes. However, the composer managed to transform the opera seria format from a constraining dramatic framework into emotive music. The libretto for Giulio Cesare, written by Nicola Francesco Haym (16781729), was based on earlier librettos that had been successfully adapted for other operas in Italy. Stylistic words: Recitative: fff Aria: Largo: Adagio: Da capo al fine: from the top to finish The first section is repeated with the singer adding ornaments (trills, runs, grace notes) to the melody. This adds nuance to the characters original thoughts and invites the audience to follow the characters train of thought.
