Fiona and Glenn are no strangers when
it comes to running a successful business

redecorating the pub and restaurant to a very
high standard, adding new features such as
the stunning doors that lead out from the
lounge onto the decking of the rear beer
garden, plus the wonderful new pirate ship
play-fort for children to play on at the front
beer garden.
As well as upgrading the interior of the
Farmers Arms, they have also introduced
a fabulous new menu for their newly titled
Harwoods Restaurant, which was created by
their expert head chef James Cullen.
James has worked in many ne restaurants
throughout his career including The Angel
Hotel in Cardiff, as well as establishments in
Guilford and London.
James is a perfectionist in everything he
does, his food denitely has the wow factor.

THE
T
he smell of the dew on a summer
morning and the rising sun
accentuates the silhouettes of the
guys with tools erecting whats going
to be the main stage for what will
be one of the main highlights of this
awesome summer festival.
With stages set up, beer barrels
brimming, entertainment areas set
out for all of the family to enjoy, the
morning will give way to that sound
of summer.
NHSOB Summer Festival will be
buzzing with crowds of all ages and
pumping out eclectic music genres
across the NHSOB site from 2pm
until late.
The NHSOB Summer Festival was
conceived in 2012.
The weather that day was pretty
shocking.
However, we braved the conditions
and had an amazing day fuelled with
music, food, fun and alcohol.
Due to the success of 2012, along
with a few improvements thanks to
welcomed feedback, we arrived at
our second festival in August 2013.
In 2013, we saw the introduction
of a larger stage, some high prole
Welsh bands and we were elated to
welcome crowds in their hundreds.
Bands Houdini Dax and 4th Street
Trafc packed the main stage and
blew the crowd away.
The future is looking good for
NHSOB Summer Festival 2014.
The team have been working
towards booking regionally famous
bands, and making our promotion
reach out to a larger audience.
We are also pleased to
announce this year there will be two
performance areas Main Stage and
Record Face Stage.
Tickets for NHSOB Summer Festival
are available via nhsobfestival.com
We look forward to seeing you
there on August 9 at Newport High
School Old Boys RFC, Yew Tree Lane,
Caerleon, Newport, NP18 1LL.

Lorna and Steven
Giles set up a
business called
Mane Attraction.
It set standards for
hairdressing in South
Wales. Collecting
numerous awards and
accolades along the
way, that business is
now known as Rhys
Giles Hairdressing
and Beauty which
continues to set those
high standards and
win award after
award.
When we recently
caught up with Rhys
he told us of the
companys continuing
development along
with what he feels
important.
While awards are
great, it is what you
produce in salon that
is the most important
thing, he said. We
pride ourselves on
offering the very best
customer service
and care. Thats why
people return - its
all about attention to
detail.
This high standard
comes from the
companys in house
training programme
and as a City and
Guilds approved
training centre the
salon always develop
their own trainees into
future stylists - they
are totally immersed
in the Rhys Giles
culture.
Having the right
partnerships is also
very important and
their very special 20
year relationship with
Kerastase endorses
Rhys Giles approach
to total quality. Its all
in the company you
keep, as Rhys puts it.
2014 has been a
very good year and
the skys the limit for
2013, and with a new
long term contract
agreed at the Celtic

the future looks very
bright.

As well as that, and just as exciting, this

This years competition is very special
indeed, with a very special conclusion. We
cant give too much away, so watch this space.
As if that wasnt enough, were also

What an edition. Keep hold of it this month
and digest every little bit.

A
huge thankyou to all our wonderful,
loyal customers who have supported us
with our refurbishment clearance sale.
Without the support of you, our loyal
customers, we would not be able to undertake
these improvements. Weve been overwhelmed
by all the positive comments and best wishes
from both new and existing customers.
This year is our 140th and we are delighted
to still be trading in Newport, and to be able to
upgrade our wonderful building.
However, our core values will not change
and Wildings will still have all the character
and charm that you, our customers, love.
At the heart of the business will always
be our commitment to providing excellent
customer service, friendly and knowledgeable
staff, to help you with your selection, good
quality goods sourced independently and
superb value for money.

Strong funny women and
beautiful men in a setting
that blurs the boundary of
performer and audience.
Performed by four dancers in a
large cage, Captive is inspired
by Rainer Maria Rilkes poem
The Panther and considers
how a human, like an animal,
can be plucked from normal
life and plunged into captivity.
Rendition has made the human
experience the same as the
animals and with connement
thrust upon the unsuspecting
victim, the wild and free must
nd ways of expressing within
the bordered and caged.
Powerfully physical,
emotionally charged and
extraordinary, Captive is a
dazzling blend of dance
and aerial work. In order to
survive, the environment is
constantly transformed though
physical ingenuity. Pacing the
cage and tumbling through
a world turned upside down,
which way is up as our cell of
connement gets turned on its
head?
An artistic
hairdressing show with a
musical groove. The Catalan
group from Barcelona takes an
eccentric and colourful beauty
salon onstage, where creation
and fantasy have no limit. With
two hairdressers and a DJ, the
show recycles and transforms
quotidian things into unique
objects that give the nal touch
to the stunning head sculptures
created live on the more daring
members of the public. Literally
a show that will make your hair
stand on end, this is for you
to see , hear, and try if you
dare!
The Riverfront, Citrus Arts,
Alchemy Fireworks, Sinfonia
Cymru and Lady Leshurr
will be combining forces to
create this years Spectacular.
Expect hula hoops, trapeze,
pyrotechnics, dance, reworks,
hip hop and classical music.
Performers will include Tin
Shed Theatre, Hoop La La,
Kitsch n Sync and a range of
circus performers. Newport will
once again be rocked with a
dramatic rework nale.
The best viewing points will be
around the Red Wave and up
along the riverbank around
the outside of The Riverfront
building.
Film Screening in The Riverfront
Studio Theatre.
Boutique, vintage, craft and
jewellery stalls in the foyer with
live music on the Caf Terrace
featuring acoustic local acts
and the Big Macs Wholly Soul
Band nishing off the day.

It was back in 1987 that Lorna and Steve Giles
opened the doors to their salon, Mane Attraction.
Lorna, a multi-award-winning stylist took her
talents and skills to the salon, setting standards for
hairdressing in South Wales, while collecting awards
and accolades along the way.
That business still exists today under the name of
Rhys Giles Hairdressing and Beauty and remains as
popular and bar-setting as ever.
With Rhys as the face of the salon, many more
awards have been won.
And now with two salons, one in Cwmbran and
the other at The Celtic Manor, the salon is a popular
as ever thanks to its ve-star-service-for-all-customers
ethos.
While awards are great, it is what you produce
in salon that is the most important thing, said Rhys.
We pride ourselves on offering the very best
customer service and care thats why people return,
its all about attention to detail.
This high standard comes from the companys in-
house training programme and, as a City and Guilds
approved training centre, the salon always develops
its own trainees into future stylists.
They are totally immersed in the Rhys Giles culture.
Having the right partnerships is also very
important and the very special 20-year relationship
with Kerastase endorses Rhys Giles approach to total
quality.
Its all in the company you keep, added Rhys.
And 2014 is shaping up to be an incredible year
for Rhys Giles at both salons.
With more customers enjoying what the salon
has to offer than ever before, and plenty of celebrity
clients, maybe now is the time for you to enjoy the
Rhys Giles treatment?

AND MAKE A
WATERSLIDE
Learning to Make A Difference
S
o, hopefully by the time youre reading
this the weather will be as glorious as
it was this time last year and you and
the family will be in the garden enjoying every
second of the sunshine.
If it is sunny, why not have some real fun this
weekend and make a slip-slidingly amazing
water slide for the garden? Heres how.
1) Get hold of some plastic sheeting
Perhaps youve had a new sofa delivered in the
last few weeks, or maybe you know someone
that works somewhere where plastic sheeting is
readily available its easy to get hold of a big
piece of plastic sheeting. Just make sure its not
to thin or too thick (about 3-5mm should do the
trick) and that its about 6ft long.
2) Find somewhere suitable to put it
Of course, a slight slope of even a hill would be
best, but make sure you have a safe landing spot.
Once youve found your spot, roll out the plastic
and secure it.
3) Get soapy
Grab a bottle of washing up liquid and squirt the
whole thing out over the sheeting.
4) Get the hose out
If youve got a sprinkler head for your hose, pop
it on and then secure your hose to the top of your
slide and turn the tap on!
Tips:
Squirt some soap along the slide will make
it much more slippery. It also helps to prevent
scrapes. Plus it gets your kids clean in the
process. Who said bath time isnt fun.
HAVE A GREAT TIME!
If you really wanted to go all out you could lay
down some playground sand under the plastic to
allow for an even more comfortable experience.
Dont use too much sand or else the plastic will
bunch up and create divots, and be more likely
to tear.
Placing sand bags on the sides of the slide
allows for added security and helps to hold the
slide in place as well.
A tent peg or large headed stake pounded
through the plastic into the ground, at the top of
the slide will help to keep the slide in place.
If the area allows, make room for a running
path to get a good head start for the older kids.
Kids is a loose term since I have seen some
university kids do some pretty amazing things
on a water slide. Not to mention a few parents.
Using a scrap piece of hose
the width or your slide and
poking a hole in it every few
inches in a straight line, will
allow the water to disperse
evenly.
Of course, if it isnt paddling
pool weather, you can always
save this page for July or
August when hopefully it
will be.
Schools To Bloom in 2014
Children in need
of Welsh Homes
A
ction for Children
Gweithredu dros Blant
is seeking local people
living in Wales to help change the
life of a vulnerable young person by
becoming a foster carer this Foster
Care Fortnight, May 12 to 25.
There is currently a shortage of
600 foster carers in Wales, and the
charity is keen to find people who
have got what it takes to open up
their home to a child in care.
Jason Hughes, practice manager
at the Action for Children
Gweithredu dros Blant Taith
Newydd fostering service in
Newport, said: There is a desperate
need for more foster carers in
Wales.
We are looking for people
who can offer a safe environment
and unconditional love to a young
person in need of support.
If you can help, please get in
touch.
For more information, please
contact Action for Childrens Taith
Newydd on 01633 270422.
Newport In Bloom is re-
vamping its competitions
for children and schools for
2014.
It is introducing a schools
award scheme that will
support school gardens rather
than encourage them to
compete against each other.
Prizes will be awarded
when a school achieves
the next level in the award
scheme.
To help out, Newport
In Bloom will be offering
schools a gardening mentor
to help pupils with their
efforts if they wish.
Now, each year there will
be competitions in different
age groups that are open to
children at home, school,
nursery, with childminders or
at cubs and brownies, etc.
This years competitions
for children will be tallest
sunflower for children aged
two to four-years-old; grow a
hairy monster in a decorated
plant pot (any grassy/leafy
plant) for five to seven-year-
olds; make and decorate an
insect hotel for youngsters
aged seven to nine-years-
old; and create a garden on
a dinner plate for ages ten
and up.

his grand Victorian house frst
opened as a nursery in January of
1989, with current owner, Mr Yatin
Mianger, taking over the business in
2008.
As well as the nursery celebrating a
quarter of a century of offering fantastic
childcare, its also my sixth year
anniversary on May 6th too! said owner
Yatin.
Norfolk House was one of the very
frst nurseries to open in the area, and
today plays an important part within the
Newport childcare industry.
During the past six years weve made
major improvements to the nursery,
making Norfolk house one of the largest
and best day care nurseries for miles
around.
Fun and learning is the heart and
soul of Norfolk House Nursery, with long
serving staff members playing a vital role
in the high standards and professional
childcare service on offer; consistent
positive feedback from parents is proof of
the hard work and dedication that each
and every carer brings to their job.
Every room of the impressive building
is fun, bright, fully interactive and
visually stimulating, flled with happy
children and attentive care workers.
There are also loads of fun activities
outside too, with a grassy park-like play
area flled with swings, slides and things
to climb, and also a hard-standing area
great for riding scooters, tricycles and toy
cars.
Our promise is simply to provide
the highest standards, with the aim of
being a home away from home for your
child. In the absence of their parents, we
strive to provide a safe, happy and loving
environment, where the children are
encouraged to learn through interaction
and play. said manageress Julia, whos
worked at Norfolk House since 1991.
Theres no greater feeling in the world
to see a happy childs smiling face, my
job is very rewarding, watching these
amazing children play, learn and grow
into confdent young people.
Norfolk House Nursery is also
renowned for their fantastic food, which
is freshly prepared in-house by their
wonderful chef. The menus are regularly
rotated to ensure that the children get
a healthy and balanced meal plan at all
times. Should your child have special
dietary requirements, dont hesitate to

WHY NOT ADOPT?
The South East Wales Adoption Service is now made
up of Newport, Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen and
Monmouthshire local authorities as part of a new Welsh
Government initiative to deliver a regional adoption
service throughout the South East Wales area.
WHAT IS ADOPTION?
Adoption is a way of giving a child a forever family in
circumstances where they are not able to remain with
their birth parents. Adoption is a process in which the
legal parental rights are permanently transferred to the
adoptive parents.
WHO ARE THE CHILDREN?
The children who need adoptive families are on average
between nine months to seven years old. There are single
children as well as sibling groups that need adoptive
placements where they can grow up together. Not being
able to fnd adoptive placements for sibling groups may
mean that brothers and sisters may be separated.
WHO CAN ADOPT?
Adoption is open to more than you might think; you dont
have to be married, own your home or be fnancially well
off. Adoption is open to single applicants, gay, lesbian
and transgender applicants and theres no age limit to
who can adopt. The most important part of adoption is to
provide children with a loving and stable home for them
to grow and reach their full potential.
WHAT TO DO NEXT?
If you are interested in adoption you can contact us
directly on 01495 355766 to speak to a member of the
team. You can get more information from our website
www.adoptionsoutheastwales.co.uk or email adoption@
blaenau-gwent.gov.uk.
We run information sessions bi-monthly where
prospective adopters can come along, meet the team
and fnd out more about adoption in a relaxed and
comfortable environment.

David Green found employment at
Newports main transport provider.

T
he frm he was working for was
downsizing and that meant there was
no longer a job for him.
Having been employed for all his
working life, he did not anticipate the
diffculty in fnding new employment.
Mr Green was not able to fnd a
permanent role for more than a year, and
then he decided to write a letter to the
Argus about his situation.
His luck changed when his letter
featured as front page news on February
20.
The response was overwhelming but one
reaction stood out.
Mr Green was personally offered
an interview with Newport Bus by the
managing director of Newport Transport,
Scott Pearson.
Mr Pearson said: As a business we are
always looking for good people to join our
company, with a proactive attitude such as
David has demonstrated. Therefore, we are
more than happy that David has completed
our interview and selection process with
fying colours. David is now embarking on
our comprehensive PCV training course
which will mean on completion that David
can join our fantastic team of PCV drivers
employed here at Newport Transport.
Bus driving is not an easy career path to
undertake, therefore at Newport Transport
we have massive respect for our staff which
I am are sure David will ft into very well.
Mr Green started work for Newport
Transport at its depot in Corporation Road
while undergoing his training to become a
licensed bus driver.
He said: I was very excited to receive
the news from Scott Pearson and I would
like to thank him for offering me this
opportunity.
Im keen to take on this new challenge,
to learn a new skill and to get on the road
to be a Newport Bus driver.
Newport Transport LTD runs Newport
Bus, NT Servicing and MOT Centre, NT
Commercial Driver Training Centre and NT
Contract Maintenance Division.
The company currently employs more
than 275 people, including 156 bus drivers
that operate a feet of almost 100 busses.

ewhaus is an attractive new
development of 64 exclusive
riverside apartments set in the
Old Town Dock area in Newport City
Centre.
Theres a wide variety of luxury one
and two bedroom apartments, with
undercroft parking, landscaped courtyard
and beautiful riverside views.
Ofcially Wales youngest city,
Newport has a bright future and
Newhaus is at the heart of it.
The exclusive development is part of
wider plans to re-establish Newport as
the cultural and cosmopolitan heart of
South Wales.
Surrounded by the dramatic Welsh
countryside and a far-reaching scenic
coastline, Newport offers the perfect
location Newhaus offers the
perfect place to live and relax.
The M4 Motorway is
approximately a ve-minute drive
away, connecting to the cities of
Cardiff and Bristol.
The apartments are also within
walking distance of Newports bus
and railway stations, perfect for the
daily commute to work.
The two wharf-style buildings
take inspiration from the citys rich
maritime heritage and are designed to
give you the best in stylish city living.
Each apartment boasts its own private
balcony and comes with secure under-
croft parking as standard with either a
river or courtyard view.
Combined with generous, green
landscaped areas Newhaus is the
ultimate place for modern, comfortable,
city living.
One-bedroom apartments start from
as little as 74,950 and there is also a
help to buy scheme which lets buyers
move in from just 5,000.
Call 01633 214087 for more
information or visit newhaus.co.uk
The Newhaus marketing suite is open
ve-days-a-week, Thursday to Monday
between 10.30am and 4.30pm.
S
hire Hall, Newport has
proven the off-plan market is
back with more than 50 per
cent of the scheme already sold
prior to completion.
The development offers buyers
a mixture of Edwardian architecture
with the latest in contemporary
living within the Grade II listed
building.
Originally built by the architect
William Tanner in 1902, Shire
Hall is an Edwardian designed
civic building which served as the
county hall for Monmouth County
Council.
It has now been restored to
reect its history, style and the
extravagance of the period by
the same team that converted the
Lansdowne Hotel and Russell Court
in Cardiff.
Buyers can choose from
a studio, one or two-bedroom
apartment with the option of secure
allocated parking.
The development is being
marketed by Savills new homes
team.
Lisa Howells, of Savills, said:
With the experience of marketing
period conversions such as The
Old Arts College in Newport,
we know the current appetite for
apartments in this kind of property.
The fact that 70 per cent of
the properties in phase one have
already been sold is evidence of
this.
This really proves there is a
real demand for good quality
housing in established residential
locations.
Phase 2 has now been
released to the market, a
combination of just seven, one and
two-bedroom town houses and
two-bedroom apartments.
Shire Hall succeeds in
bringing together an attractive
Edwardian building with all the
character features of the time, with
a high specication interior which
fulls all the needs of a modern
home.
Each apartment has its own
original charm with the penthouses
offering views of the city.
With the majority of property
exempt from stamp duty, the
development is an appealing
prospect for local buyers and
investors alike.
Two new show apartments

INTRODUCING OUR
We spoke to Scott Sanders, director of Derwen
about his ambitions for Wales only older
peoples housing company.
What is Derwen?
Derwen provides housing and related services
informed by the needs, aspirations and concerns
of older people. We already offer a wide range
of services designed to make it easier for people
to live a healthy, independent life within their
community and our ambition is to deliver new,
innovative approaches to older peoples housing,
always centred on the needs of the individual.
What does Derwen mean?
Derwen is the Welsh word for oak. We worked
with residents, staff and our board to come up
with a name and a brand that captured and
communicated our values and ambitions for the
new company: Trust, permanence, strength and a
positive sense of age and longevity.
Is Derwen starting from scratch?
Yes and no. Newport Housing Trust began
looking for a company to join in mid-2013 and
Seren Group was selected in November 2013 as
the partner of choice. Charter Housing also spoke
to its residents living in dedicated older peoples
housing about the potential to join and they
decided to transfer into Derwen.
What inspired you to create Derwen?
Our residents. We have wanted to nd
a way to specialise in older peoples
housing and support but we didnt
have enough critical mass. Derwen
starts work with more than 1,000
homes for older people and this is a
solid foundation on which to grow and
innovate.
Derwen and the Seren Group, of
which were part, have a wealth of
experience in providing homes and services
for older people ranging from homes with
extra care to a specialist centre for early onset
dementia.
Why do older people need their own
housing company?
A key reason is changing demographics and the
expanding older population. In Wales the median
age has risen from 36.5 in 1985 to 42.1 in 2014
and is projected to rise to 43.7 by 2035.
We strongly believe that we owe it to older
people to invest in service needs. We want
to innovate and push boundaries in creating
excellent services and homes for older people.
What makes older people different?
The same thing that makes us all different,
individuality. But there are distinct challenges that
many older people face as they age, such as sight
and mobility impairment, digital exclusion, social
isolation and nancial instability.
Our resident panel is made of people with a
wide range of career and personal backgrounds
who all have a huge amount to contribute to
shaping their housing company they and our
other residents also tend to have the time to really
engage in their company and the wide range of
events and activities we organise.
Will you move into a Derwen home when
you get old(er)?
I hope so! Theres already a waiting list for our
homes, which reects how desirable they are
but also the shortfall in suitable housing for older
people. If we deliver on our ambitions, maybe Ill
be lucky enough to become a resident but thats
a long way off!

I
ts been nigh on impossible to
get a table at Newports new
Pizza Express without waiting,
so being invited along to try out the
venue for this months Voice was a
real treat.
Situated at Newport Retail
Park in Spytty, Pizza Express is
a welcome addition to Newports
culinary scene, and although its
part of an international chain, it
certainly doesnt feel like it when
youre in there.
We went along on a Saturday
night with our two girls, Poppy and
Penny.
Poppy being ten in July was
very excited to be invited along to
review the new restaurant as it had
been the talk of the playground
during the week previous. She did
promise her own review, but its not
been forthcoming as yet!
By night, the restaurant is a
lovely place to enjoy a meal. With
lots of lovely blue lighting and
wonderfully comfy seating we
got a booth its busy yet still
intimate.
The menu is filled with lots of
different things, from classic pizza
and pasta dishes to a wide selection
of modern cuisine.
We decided to go for a full
three-course meal.
To start, it was dough balls all
round, naturally.
The childrens portions came
with garlic butter and were served
with fresh salad of red pepper,
santos tomato and cucumber, with
the adults portion similar.
If you havent had Pizza
Express dough balls, then you
really should if you have, then
you really need no more detail.
The main menu was a real treat,
with plenty to choose from and
something for every taste and diner.
The kids Piccolo menu offers
lots of choice with a selection of
pasta dishes and pizzas.
Penny went for her all-time
favourite meal pasta with garlic
butter, and Poppy went for the kids
American pizza, which was topped
with pepperoni, mozzarella and
tomato.
I went for a calzone which
was amazing a folded pizza from
the Naples region of Italy, mine
was filled with goats cheese, char
grilled vegetables, sweet baby
onions, pesto, baby spinach and
gran moravia cheese with a spicy
arrabbiata sauce.
It was so fresh and tasty, a
perfect summer dinner.
Dave went for pizza, choosing
the American hot which was a feast
of pepperoni, mozzarella, tomato,
with jalapeno peppers. With a
choice of bases, Dave chose the
thin and crispy which proved to be
the perfect accompaniment.
And so on to desserts what a
choice there is.
I had a huge slice of tiramisu,
while Dave passed on pudding;
he was too full from his pizza and
starter.
The girls enjoyed an ice cream

sundae each, which disappeared in a
flash.
There are many things that are
great about Pizza Express in Newport.
Of course, the food is excellent,
but so is the service which was
faultless with the right level of
attention.
The childrens menu is a
veritable bargain at 6.50 for
three courses and, probably most
reassuringly of all, the restaurant
also does doggy bags, so if your
little one drops off mid-dough
balls, you can take the rest home
for tomorrows lunch.
The childrens menu also
offers a create your own option,
which means even the fussiest
of kids will get to eat something
they want.
Why not take a table this
month and see whats on offer?
Visit pizzaexpress.com for
more information, or pop in.

G
areth has worked as a chef for many years
at some of the most popular establishments
in Newport and the surrounding area. Hes
hes looking forward to bringing his signature
style of home cooking to the Rock and Fountain.
We will be specialising in thick, hand-cut
steaks and a bounty of fresh seafood,
with freshly caught fish playing
a major role on the menu, said
Gareth.
Ive worked as a chef in many
great places over the years and got
to know what people want when
they visit any pub and restaurant;
good honest food and drink that
are great value for money and excellent
quality.
This will be the ethos of The Rock and
Fountain, where families can enjoy incredible
food at an unbelievable price. For example well
be offering a varied menu where you can choose
two courses for only 10.
As well as this great money saving menu,
which will be available all day every day, there

dishes from twelve different countries across the
world, and also a traditional Sunday roast offered
every week. There will also be a great selection
for vegetarians.
Gareth and Heather have big plans for this
classic pub and restaurant, with families being at its
heart and soul.
They will also make use of the many
beautiful rooms that this wonderful
building has to offer, with the library
being used as a private room for parties
and special occasions, plus a sizeable
function room which can easily seat up
to sixty people for wedding receptions
and other events.
There will be a grand reopening party on
Saturday May 31st and everyone is more than
welcome to come along and join in with the
festivities. The party starts from 7pm and there will
be live entertainment from the extremely popular
Elastic Band, plus complimentary glasses of
Prosecco and hors doeuvres for guests.
Gareth and I are really excited to be opening a
place of our own; we cant wait to welcome in new
customers and old regulars back to the Rock and
Fountain, added Heather.
Ive known this pub all my life, as I grew up in
Penhow. Wed like to take this opportunity to thank
all of our family and friends for their continued
support, and look forward to seeing you all on our
opening night!
The Rock and Fountain has disabled access and

of Neil Simon, blends humour with
pathos. Duets is a hilarious tribute
to the strength and madness of the
human heart.

WALES
MILLENIUM
CENTRE
//
Wales Millennium Centre will
be presenting the first UK and
Ireland tour of Cape Town Operas highly
acclaimed production of Show Boat this
July. The show will visit Birmingham
Hippodrome (2-5 July); The Lowry,
Manchester (8-12 July); Wales Millennium
Centre, Cardiff (22-26 July) and Dublins
Bord Gais Energy Theatre (29 July 2
Aug).
Cape Town Opera is Africas premier
opera company. Its soloists and chorus
have won the acclaim of critics and
audience members around the globe
including the award for Best International
Opera Chorus at the 2013 International
Opera Awards.
Show Boat is the perfect showcase for
the talented voices of Cape Town Opera
many of whom have visited the UK
on previous tours of Porgy & Bess and
Mandela Trilogy. Based on the novel by
Edna Ferber, Show Boat is one of the first
American musicals ever written. Created
in 1927 with music by Jerome Kern and
book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein
II, it tells the story from the old American
South, rich with nostalgia, humour, love
stories and well loved melodies such
as Ol Man River and Cant Help Lovin
Dat Man. The story follows the lives of
the performers, stagehands, and dock
workers on the
Cotton Blossom,
a Mississippi
River Show Boat,
over a forty year
period from
1887 to 1927.
As a production
Show Boat,
which
premiered on
Broadway in
1927, has all the
glamour and
flourish of a big
family musical
but with a story
that highlights the real life of people at
that time, including the racial tensions
that they faced. The rarely performed
production reflects the situation of South
Africas past whilst highlighting through
Cape Town Operas talents, the bright
future ahead.
The UK premire and tour of Cape
Town Operas production will feature
over two hundred period costumes
which span the forty years featured in the
musical from bustles and wigs to flapper
dresses. The set design will feature the
talents of internationally renowned Johan
Engels, who has worked with major
theatre and opera companies across the
world, including the RSC, Royal Opera
House, Houston Opera, Chicago Lyric
Opera, as well as Welsh National Opera
(WNO). The production is under the
direction of the award -winning Janice
Honeyman. The company will be joined
by the 30 strong, Cape Philharmonic
Orchestra.
Cape Town Operas Show Boat has
previously enjoyed a successful season
in Africa and Europe and this tour is an
extension of Wales Millennium Centres
strategic partnership with Cape Town
Opera.
Mathew Milson, Managing Director,
Wales Millennium Centre said, I am
delighted that we are able to enhance
our excellent, longstanding partnership
with Cape Town Opera - one of the
worlds foremost opera companies., and
work with our network of theatres in the
UK and Ireland to make this amazing tour
happen.
Michael Williams, Managing Director,
Cape Town Opera said, We are thrilled
to bring Cape Town Operas production
of Show Boat to the UK for the very first
time, with an exceptional cast, our award
winning chorus and joined by the Cape
Philharmonic Orchestra. This first UK
visit of this production will showcase the
talents of the company whilst offering
a wonderful spectacle and experience
for all the family, featuring the design
of Johan Engels and under the special
direction of Janice Honeyman.
As strategic partners working together
to strengthen cultural links between
Wales and South Africa, Cape Town
Operas collaborative projects with Wales
Millennium Centre are part of a growing
legacy of South African businessman
and philanthropist Sir Donald Gordon,
after whom the main auditorium at Wales
Millennium Centre is named.
