Upward Bound

Journalism/English Teacher Job Opportunity


Upward Bound is an intense academic, social, and cultural experience for high school students. The purpose of the program is to assist first generation college bound high school students to prepare for and succeed in post-secondary education. * This is a 6 week assignment beginning June 9, 2014 and ending July 18 2014; 2 hours of classroom instruction, 5 days a week for the duration of the program; mandatory orientation on June 6 and teacher meetings every Friday from 12:30 am to 1:00pm Job Description Provide English Instruction to 10th, 11th, and/or 12th grade participants during the Upward Bound Summer Program (English instruction based on California Standards). Provide meaningful and planned English instruction to students To teach the student skills necessary in communicating in the print or broadcast media today with an emphasis on writing, but including interviewing, reporting, reacting and synthesizing. To help the student to become an intelligent consumer of the mass media. To give the student the opportunity to discover and explore the various forms of writing utilized in journalism. Prepare course syllabus and interactive curricula to develop participants Assist participants and program staff to establish, and maintain acceptable classroom behavior and standards. Communicate regularly with Project Director and Academic Advisor to ensure the academic development of participants. Assess and report on participants progress by administering a pre and post assessment instrument(s). Performs other duties as assigned by Project Director. Minimum Qualifications: Experience teaching high school students (9th through 12th grades). Current teaching credential Experience working with low-income and diverse student populations. EDUCATION: Bachelors degree in English; Masters/Teaching Credential LAUSD employee preferred Experience working with low-income first, generation high school students Ability to work some occasional evening hours, as needed to support student activities Day/hours and duration of job: Approximately 6 weeks Employment start date: June 9, 2014 to July 18, 2014 Working hours: 2 hours plus one hour compensation for preparation Hourly Rate: $25
