Most of us wouldnt think twice
about relaxing with a glass of
Merlot afer a hard day, but we
might be a little more hesitant
about jumping into a pool of it. Not
so in Hakone, Japan, where guests
at the Yunessun Spa Resort are
lining up to soak in hot tubs full of
everything from red wine and sake
to coee and green tea. The wine
pool even comes complete with a
12-foot bottle, so guests can enjoy a
glass or two as they splash around.
The spa claims that Cleopatra
was a big fan of bathing in wine
because it rejuvenates the skin,
while swimming in sake can remove
freckles and age spots. Looks fun,
but well stick to drinking it, thanks.

WHO KNEW?
COMPETITIVE
SURGERY TO
GET A DATE
Its designer handbags at dawn in Hong Kong, where a shortage of eligible men is
forcing the citys 200,000 single females to go to extreme lengths to nd a husband.
Hundreds are signing up to dating agencies linked to South China, where their
chances are better because decades of the one-child policy have resulted in high ratios
of men to women. But most worrying is the sudden rise in cosmetic clinics to supply
demand for double eyelid procedures. Te much-coveted Caucasian eyelid surgery
is now increasingly recognised as a sign of female beauty and wealth in Asia.
THE
TRUTH
ABOUT
FEMALE
KILLERS
As the recent cases of
Amanda Knox and Joanna
Dennehy revealed, society
is endlessly obsessed with
the idea of the female
killer. Criminologist David
Wilson explains why
Marie Claire: How common is it for a
woman to kill?
David Wilson: By and large, murder
remains a young mans business. Most
female murderers are domestic murderers
they kill those intimate to them, children
or partners, in ts of passion. Female
serial killers dened as those who not
only murder three times but disengage for
at least 30 days between each murder and
live a normal life in between are very
rare. Te number in the UK, such as Myra
Hindley and Rose West, is in single digits,
and they acted out their crimes with men.
MC: Why, if we know women are capable
of murder, do cases such as Joanna Dennehy
and Amanda Knox still cause such shock?
DW: Most people still nd it dicult to
stomach the truth that some women are
capable of extreme cruelty in pursuit of
sexual gratication, in the way men are.
Knoxs guilty verdict is still hotly debated,
with many believing she is innocent, and
she is due to appeal against her
conviction. If we assume the guilty verdict
is correct, both she and Dennehy come
under the category of spree killers,
who, in the pursuit of their own sexual
satisfaction, temporarily blurred the lines
between fantasy and reality.
MC: So it seems sex was the incentive?
DW: We know sex was at the root and
was the context in which the murders
took place, but it was more about power.
Dennehy was obsessed with the idea of
raping men, sexual humiliation and porn.
Whether Knox is guilty or not, we do
know she was consumed by the idea of
sexual power and control over others.
Im the only criminologist to have read
Knoxs private prison diary after her
initial arrest, which showed her to be,
among other things, preoccupied by her
own sexual power and completely devoid
of empathy for others suering classic
traits in many female murderers.
MC: So there are qualities that female
murderers have in common?
DW: Every case is unique, but often they
have underlying mental-health problems.
Dennehy, for example, had been brought
to the attention of mental health services
as having an antisocial personality disorder.
Knoxs diary revealed she also had a
personality disorder, exhibiting extreme
egocentric narcissism and a need to be
the centre of attention. She compared
herself to Helen of Troy and Mother
Teresa, and believed everyone was in love
with her, even her prison guards. Her
lack of empathy was most startling. Her
supposed friend Meredith was almost
absent from her diary mentioned just
once. Knox may be innocent, but she also
exhibited techniques of what we call
neutralisation, which we see in many
murderers. Tey claim they cant remember
the moment of their victims death because
they were on a high or blacked out. Q
