1. Figure Q1 shows the process of a net heat release rate occurred in a direct injection CI engine.
Figure Q1.
(a) Define the following phases:
(i) a-b: (ii) b-c: (iii) c-d: (iv) d-e: (4 marks)
(b) When fixing the point of start injection, state the effect of increasing the injection pressure on the four phases of combustion. (6 marks)
(c) Describe the sequences of processes which must occur before the liquid fuel in the injection system in a direct-injection compression-ignition engine is fully burned. (10 marks)
2. Figure Q2 on page 2 shows an engine with the geometry of V d + V c = 0.4x10 -3 m 3
working on the Ideal Otto Cycle, has a compression ratio ( ) 12:1. It is running under ambient conditions of pressure at 100 kN/m 2 absolute and temperature of 20 C.
Question 2 Continued on page 2 1
Figure Q2.
Assume this engine runs at a normal process, which means its normal exponent (n) is 1.25, for its compression and expansion strokes, also, the temperature difference between the end of compression and the end of combustion (T 3 -T 2 ) is 1000 C:
(a) Calculate both the pressures and temperatures at the end of the compression stroke. (6 marks)
(b) Calculate both the pressures and temperatures at the end of the expansion stroke. (6 marks)
(c) Calculate the cycle indicated work. (8 marks)
3. With respect to Steering Systems
(a) Draw a line diagram to show the layout of a steering system that conforms to the Ackerman principle. (4 marks)
(b) Describe, with the aid of a diagram, what is meant by the term Castor angle. (4 marks)
(c) Describe, with the aid of a diagram, what is meant by the term Negative Offset and why this is desirable? (4 marks)
(d) Give two reasons why a Camber angle is used. (4 marks)
(e) Discuss what is meant by the terms of over-steer and under-steer. (4 marks) Continuation of Question 2: Continued 2
4. With respect to Brake Systems
(a) With the aid of a diagram, explain the self-servo action of a drum brake subsystem. Identify and label the main components. (15 marks)
(b) List Five differences between disc and drum brakes, compare their advantages and disadvantages respectively. (5 marks)
5. With respect to Vehicle Transmission Systems;
(a) List FIVE main components of a single plate friction clutch and describe how this type of clutch operates. (10 Marks)
