Culture Tips: Chinese Dining Etiquette
Where do I sit at the table?
At traditional Chinese restaurants, tables are
often round and seat 8-10 people.

How do I order food?
Typically, only one menu will be given coz
usually one person will do the ordering for the
entire table as all dishes are served family
style: all dishes are meant to be shared
Sometimes, the host will order several dishes
and then pass the menu around and ask each
person to order one additional dish.

Fu wu yuan
It is not uncommon for the waiter or waitress
to present the menu to the table and then
stand at the table while the guests are reading
the menu and decide what to order.

Tipping
Tipping is not generally expected in mainland
China. Although bellboys and staff may have
become used to the international traveler
giving small tips in large hotels, it is not
expected or required.
Most larger hotels and some good restaurants
charge a service fee, e.g. 15%
Tips for tipping
If you do decide to leave a tip, like the change
leftover after a meal, your waiter may look
puzzled or even try to chase you down to give
it back. In larger cities, wait-staff are becoming
used to foreign visitors leaving tips so they'll
probably happily keep it. However, the bottom
line is, in China, it certainly isn't necessary or
expected to tip

Who pays for the dinner?
1. When the check arrives, it is good manners to offer to
pay for the meal. Not offering to pay the check is seen
as impolite.
2. With work colleagues/friends: going dutch is ok
3. Close friends will often take turns paying the bill
4. If someone pays for you, it is expected that you repay
the favor by inviting and paying for him or her to dine
at a similar or slightly more expensive restaurant.
5. Men dining with a girlfriend and her family are
expected to pay for the bill or at least offer to pay it.
