T
he mood is turning in the
ght against this austerity
government. NUT conference
voted for more strikes. Now local
government workers are balloting on
a pay strike before the summer break
we could strike alongside them.
Health workers are moving towards
action in the autumn too. Fireghters
have been back on the picket lines in
their ght for decent pensions and
London tube workers have struck to
defend ticket oces.
If we step up the ght we can beat back
this government on all fronts.
In the NUT that means building all
the elements of our campaign over the
coming weeks. Te lobby of parliament
on 10 June is a chance to organise in
every school to ensure someone attends.
Te national demo against austerity
called by the Peoples Assembly on
Saturday 21 June is an opportunity to
mobilise too.
Tese can feed into the planned
strike later this term. It would be a
massive missed opportunity not to come
out on the same day as the Unison,
GMB and Unite members we work
alongside in schools.

I would like to get Socialist Worker regularly

I want to join the Socialist Workers Party

Such a strike would see over one
million out and put real pressure on
the NASUWT to rejoin the ght too.
What a message of unity that strike
could bring at a time when the Tories,
UKIP and press are trying to divide us.
But if we want to win we will need
to do more. Teachers, local government
workers and health workers could strike
together this autumn. We need to press
for more strikes, and make sure they are
coordinated.
We dont want a repeat of 2011,
when the great pensions one-day strike
in November that year was followed by
dismal retreat.
We need to push for strikes to go
beyond one-day protests. We need to
demand escalating strike action that can
win real gains for us, and for everyone
who hates Gove, Cameron and their
austerity government.

Model motion
Pass this model motion in your
school or association:
We congratulate delegates at NUT
conference for deciding to step
up our ght on our pay, pensions,
working conditions and his wider
assault on education.
We pledge to build all three
elements in this terms NUT action:
Lobby of parliament on 10 June
Peoples Assembly demonstration
against austerity on 21 June
National strike planned for after
23 June
We urge our union leaders to
coordinate that strike with Unison,
Unite and GMB unions, who are
balloting for a pay strike in local
government and schools. If we all
came out together we would all be
stronger.
But we believe that to win we will
need to escalate our strikes in the
autumn to beyond one day protests.
We urge the NUT to develop such
a program so members and Gove
know before the summer break the
outlines of the action we plan for the
autumn.
