Reflection

Should all TV weathermen be considered meteorologists? That was my argument that I
talked about throughout these two genres. I wanted to educate people that not all TV
weathermen have the same education as a meteorologist. My main audience was people who get
their weather information from TV. The age group for this audience would probably be 18-50.
My audience will have to be familiar with some of the famous meteorologists in the field. I
wanted to make these genres in a way that would engage them in a fun way. I felt like an
advertisement flyer for the talk show would get their attention. I have seen numerous flyers
around campus that have me stopping to take a look at them. Throughout my hometown of
Troutman I also see flyers on telephone poles and the sides of buildings. The amount of ground I
could cover with a flyer made it much more appealing for me to do it. The amount of
information on the flyer was important to me. I didnt want to fill the flyer up with useless text.
I wanted it to have just the right amount of information for them to understand what was going to
happen. The flyer reveals what is going to be discussed and where it will be discussed at. This
type of genre exits all over the place. If you are walking down the street you will most likely see
some type of flyer. A flyer can advertise a number of different things like a concert, missing pet,
job openings, etc. I felt like it would work just to get that message out about the talk show.
Visual mode was used a lot for the flyer. The background image of clouds indicates that
this might have something to do with weather which is the point. Spatial mode was also used in
making the flyer. I wanted the title of the talk show to be on top of the flyer so that would be the
thing most people would see first. The next thing I wanted was the main topic of discussion
below the title. Reading that would hopefully draw their interest to keep reading to learn who
the special guest was. Finally I put what TV station it would be airing from. I used linguistic
mode in determining how much text I should have on it. I didnt want to overwhelm the page,
but I also wanted to enough information so people would gain interest. By organizing it in the
way I described above I feel like it got the point across without being too wordy.
The other genre I did was the talk show that was advertised on the flyer. With the talk
show I can almost literally have a round table of different people in the field discussing their own
opinion. I wanted to create an expert that would appear as a special guest on the show. Having a
special guest would hopefully draw in more viewers for that one particular episode. I know that
works well with all sorts of different other shows. By having an expert I knew people would
take him more seriously also. This type of genre exists throughout television, radio, and the
internet. Knowing it exists within all of this I have the potential for a lot of viewers.
The talk show incorporates mostly linguistic and spatial mode. Linguistic mode was
probably the most used. I had to deliver the dialogue in a certain way for the audience to
understand all of the points I was making. I also wanted to make the dialogue entertaining so the
viewers will stay invested into what is being talked about. The organization of the script and
even where the characters sat on the talk show used spatial mode. I wanted to have the host at
the end of the row with the two guests to his left. When the special guest appears he will be
sitting at the end of the row. With this genre being a script I needed to make the characters
believable in how they would say their lines. This is where gestural mode was used. These
being characters nobody knows anything about I had to make the best judgment of who would
say what and why at that particular time. I wanted to make the characters seem to know each
other in some way. By doing that I could add a little more depth to each one of them. For
example everybody on the show knows Hurley Cain is an expert in meteorology and you can tell
they treat him with respect. John and Nichole have both spoken and been on the show before so
for Ron to pick at them felt natural for the character. Even having them joke a little bit helped
with establishing depth.
A source I used a lot was an article by AJ Jain titled Can we finally define who a
Meteorologist is?! This showed me how upset people were getting with this debate. In one
part he says TV professionals who receive an online broadcast meteorology certificate from
Mississippi State should not be allowed to call themselves a meteorologistperiod. He is
literally saying they are not good enough. Another reason why I chose this source is because I
wanted to defend some of those people who do get an online certificate. Some of them are just
as good as people who went to a four year university and I mentioned that in my script. In the
article Is there a difference between a meteorologist and a weatherman? by HowStuffWorks
they say Both occupations involve reporting on and predicting weather patterns, but a
meteorologist is a scientist with a degree related to atmospheric science or meteorology; weather
anchors do not necessarily require this level of education to do their jobs. This was a very
important piece of information for my discussion. It isnt demeaning to anybody. But it does
not call weather anchors meteorologists.
Pathos was a way I appealed to my audience. I wanted to make the script enjoyable to
read and add some humor to it. To do this I added Ron Burgundy to be one of the characters.
He is based off of a character named Ron Burgundy in the movie Anchorman. I knew most of
my audience would be familiar with that character. By having an expert on the show I practiced
ethos. I wanted my audience to trust what was being said. With having an expert on the show I
also appealed to my audience using logos.
Every time I would tell people that I wanted to be a meteorologist most of them assumed
a TV weatherman. I would reply back with the same response: no. I picked this topic because a
lot of people dont know that some TV weathermen dont even have a meteorology degree and
some of those people shouldnt be considered meteorologists. Its a like a chef and a baker. You
wouldnt ask a baker to cook you a steak. You would ask the chef because they have more
experience with that. That is why I wanted to tell people that they are not the same. The reason
this is a good time to deliver this information is because this field is improving in technology
rapidly. This field is more than just weathermen. My audience can then tell other people that
there is a difference.
In the end I feel very confident that these genres would work for my audience. I do think
that these do help get the attention of my audience. With media being huge in todays world and
things going viral the talk show would be successful. People are always looking for reassurance
also. They want to know if their weatherman is being accurate in what they are saying. After
reading this, hopefully they will have the information they need to answer that for themselves.
