Summer Tribal DOT Crew Lead

This position is responsible for supervising the Tribal DOT laborers in field work, overseeing safety
protocols and keeping the project running efficiently. This position requires removal of brush and trees
from various road right of way corridors as well as filling pot holes and problematic areas on right of
way, correcting erosion damage and maintaining trails. Work will be done using power and hand tools,
trucks, ATVs.

The incumbent establishes methods and procedures for attaining specific goals and objectives, and
receives guidance in terms of broad goals.

Team: Capital Projects Salary range: $18.00-$20.00 per hour
Reports to: Capital Projects Coordinator Schedule: Seasonal, full-time
Salary Status: Non Exempt from Overtime Last Revised: April 2014
Responsibilities/Duties:

Works with Capital Projects Coordinator to understand and organize projects.
Supervise Tribal DOT laborers
Hold safety meetings and enforce strict safety procedures
Set and adhere to daily check in schedule with Capital Projects Coordinator
Ensure project is progressing according to schedule
Keep weekly log of work performed for Federal Reporting
Clear brush and debris from overgrown roads and trails.
Navigate and locate trails and work areas
Repair erosion damage to trails.
Operate chainsaws and other power equipment in a safe manner
Maintain camp
Maintain equipment such as saws, trucks and tools
Transport supplies
Operate NVE vehicles such as autos, boats and ATVs according to NVE safety guidelines.
Perform and document maintenance on all equipment.
Receive, scan, index, archive or dispose of records from various departments following NVE
guidelines
Input data into computer workstation for cataloging and archive indexing
Attend all required staff meetings and trainings.
Work with other agencies
Other duties as assigned

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
Must have the ability to supervise and lead a team. Applicant must have organizational and problem-
solving skills to run a project with minimal supervision. Must have the knowledge and skills to assess
field situations, remain a successful leader during an emergency. familiar with Microsoft Office programs,
able to operate printers, scanners and digital cameras. Able to communicate verbally and in writing in
order to provide status reports and generate tracking records. Must maintain a neat work area, demonstrate
10,000 years in our Traditional Homeland, Prince William Sound, the Copper River Delta, & the Gulf of Alaska
the ability to stay productive and show initiative when working alone. Must be a hard worker and have
the ability to be self motivated and work together with a crew in a remote setting. Ability to work and
live in remote wooded areas safely. Needs knowledge of safe working practices in the woods. Water
crossing, water safety, knowledge and experience preferred. Ability to operate ATVs, knowledge and
skills operating small boats in open and swift water preferred. Ability to run and service chain saws, hand
held brush cutters, trucks, ATVs, hand tools and material handling equipment. Willingness to participate
in and comply with safety training programs.





Experience Requirement:
Experience in leading outdoor/remote site crews preferred. General boating and outboard knowledge and
experience. Experience working in the woods in a remote setting. Experience with 4wd and ATV trail
running. Experience with camp set, cooking and daily living skills in the woods.
Experience in operating small boats, ATVs and power tools required. Experience working in remote
areas and in outdoor conditions preferred. Must be minimum 18 years of age and possess a current
Alaska Drivers license. Will be subject to drug and alcohol screening as per NVE policies.
An EFF red card is preferred


Education Requirements:
High School Diploma or Equivalent. Bachelors Degree preferred.

Performance standard
Applicant must be able to regularly lift and carry 75 lbs. over rough terrain. The position requires that
applicants are in sufficient condition to perform physically demanding tasks. The use of hand, eye and
muscle coordination to safely operate boats, power tools (adult applicants only) and hand tools is
required.

Environmental Factors
Majority of work will be completed out of doors. The position poses significant risk of encountering
inclement/cold weather and dangerous wildlife. Some possibility of remote/cold water survival
situations. This position entails risks of injury from using power tools and normal risks of physical labor
done in the outdoors.
