Social responsibility
Social responsibility can be presented in many different ways. Its a duty a person has to
achieve, whether its to balance the economy, ethical responsibility or even household
responsibility. Parents hold a social responsibility for the way their childrens act. The term
responsibility holds various connotations in diverse parts of the world; it varies from age,
culture, location and gender. Its fascinating to know although we are all human beings, we all
hold different standards, whether its ethically, or religiously. Places all over the world hold
different principles to their honor. Things that are high valued materialistically can mean
absolutely nothing in a different culture. Not everyone agrees in comparing women and men
alike in this country, but compared to other countries; our statistics are very high. It is not rare
to hear parents saying, your only job is to go to school and do well" to their children. I can
speak personally for this experience. However, in other countries children from the early age of
3 are expected to work and assist their parents. Ethical responsibilities in other countries create
better citizens.
The types of ethical responsibilities people hold vary due to the way they were raised.
What people hold as an ethical responsibility is something they believe is the right thing to do.
They are expected to hold clear moral standards that are passed drown from one generation to
another. In an abstract a few specialists conducted research, the focus of their research was to
understand the development of moral obligations, Because everyone has his own concept of
Salguero 2

what is right and wrong, ethics can vary drastically from person to person. You can stop ten
different people on the street, give them a scenario that asks them to tell you if it is ethical and
get ten different answers(Chad Stetson). This helps demonstrate that people from the same
culture can still uphold a different way of thinking. Now imagine people from a different
culture.
After reading "Reasoning Moral Obligations and Interpersonal Responsibilities in
Different Cultural Contexts I learned how different our culture is to many different places Here,
our ethical responsibility obligations such as keeping a promise are at the top of the list. When it
comes to interpersonal relationships, they have duties such as concerning themselves with the
well beings of others. In the western, they have fewer obligatory actions and are more dependent
on the circumstance of the situation. Christine Ross- Loh indication her goals as a parent, which
is to raise self-reliant- and successful children(Huffington post). In other countries, parents have
other goals that pertain to their children who arent corrupt, but are different. Foreign people
might be aiming to raise hard workers that arent necessarily "educated." The term responsibility
can be stretched in many ways that can vary on the circumstance it is being used. In this post,
Im using it as a type of social matter.
In the 21
st
century, kids value top notch technology, whether its an iPhone, laptop, or a
vehicle. From personal experience, I can say that the thing's kids do as activities have drastically
changed from one generation to another. It is rare to see kids in bikes, scooters or running
outside in the day or night time. I have cousins who is two years old with an iPad. Kids are
attracted to technology. Maybe because of the lights, games, or the way things move. For
whatever reason it may be its very addicting to young children. Parents have found it much
easier to control their children by handing them a phone that distracts them, or recording some of
Salguero 3

their favorite shows to calm them down. I walk to my uncles house and see my two- year old
cousin watching TV without any type of movement. One of the hardest things is trying to get
their attention when the television is on. Im not saying it is bad parenting to do so, but that there
are other methods to keep children entertained. This has simply become socially accepted by
many.
Some children work well under pressure when it comes to the education system.
However, this isnt the case for the United States. NBC news posted an article that I found quite
alarming. Its title reads as follows; US teens lag in global education rankings as Asian countries
rise to the top." The US used to be one of the top leading countries when it came to Math and
Science. As time went by we slowly started decreasing in ranking when it came to every subject
in the education scheme. American teens scored below the international level in math and
roughly average in science and reading, compared to a dozen other countries that participated in
the 2012 (PISA) (M. Alex Johnson). Although many countries participated, this was the first
Vietnam contributed into the assessment. They managed to score a higher average in math and
science. They described the students as making a scant headway on recent global achievement
exams. Basically, they are saying that students in the US are heading to a downward spiral. This
article is written by a famous news in the US. They are trying to inform the country that our
incoming generations arent doing so well compared to other countries around the world. Maybe
this has to do with the way we raise kids in the 21
st
century?
There are plenty of laws in this state that prevent certain ways parents used to raise their
kids, ways that some people may consider cruelty. Having your child start working at an early
age is a major difference between then and now. Women were expected to stay home and help
raise the children while tending to the man of the house that brought the money. Maybe women
Salguero 4

being at home helped straighten the kids out. Few students attended schools in the 20
th
century
because it wasnt mandatory, the ones that did were either very wealthy or knew that school was
their only way out of poverty. This is the only reason I find as to why things changed in the US.
Now, all children are mandatory to attend school from kinder - 12
th
grade. Simply, because all
kids are forced to attend school doesnt mean that they all come with the mentality to learn.
These are the problematic students who distract the teachers attention from the ones that truly
want to learn, pulling them back over time.
The types of social responsibility a person can have vary dramatically. However, when it
comes to our countries, parents hold a social responsibility for the way their childrens act. The
types of ethical responsibilities we have in this country are one of the best. We give children the
opportunity to a free public education. One of our main responsibilities in The United States is to
raise nourishing, generous, and prosperous children for the future of this country. Things like this
arent produced by forcing children to live at school the 7 days of the week away from their
parents. Children have minds that begin developing from the minute they are born. They learn by
their parents who can influence their actions, bad/good habits, and the type of environment the
parents place them in. The goals we strive for or that our parents strive for in the U.S. are
different from other foreign countries around the world. In this country, all children are
mandated to attend school from kindergarten to 12
th
grade as I mentioned earlier. Students
cannot begin to work until the age of 16 with consent of the school called a workers permit,"
this permit only allows a certain amount of hours a student can work. As norm this may sound to
us, this can sound ridiculous for someone else. Others may argue that if a child wants to work
and for the right reasons, they should be allowed to. If a child is accustomed to viewing his or
her parents unmotivated for tasks and settling for the minimal things in life, then thats the only
Salguero 5

thing children know to do. As a social responsibility parents need to strive for success for not
only themselves but for the future of their children who will help provide for the US in the long
run.
Every country values different moral values, ethnic responsibilities, and what they see for
their country in the long run. The equality of men and women are more likely to be valued in the
U.S. rather than other countries. The expectations of children and the way they are raised are also
different from us. The types of ethical responsibilities in Asian countries prove that their manner
of raising children is better than us in the academic world. It was Vietnams first time
participating in the assessment and they managed to beat the U.S. The future citizens of this
country are leading towards a downward spiral academically. Rising rapid technology is not
helping with our issue either. The U.S. needs to reevaluate their ethnical responsibilities in order
to raise better citizens.
