scape Design & Construc-
tion LLC, based in
Pequannock Township, has been
creating One of a Kind,
Professional Landscape Designs!
Owner Dennis Coyle has
been in the green industry his
entire life. As a kid growing up,
he apprenticed with his father,
the owner of a successful land-
scaping company. Alongside his
father, he learned the skills
needed to later start his own
business. At 16, he took a job
with GroRite Garden centers
where he acquired the intricate
knowledge of greenery, annuals,
perennials, trees, shrubs, and
more. He continued with
GroRite for eight years, through
his education at the County
College of Morris. At CCM, he
studied Agricultural Business
and obtained his degree in
Applied Sciences before gradu-
ating in 2007.
Most people do not realize
the potential that their property
offers until a well-practiced
designer, such as Dennis, comes
and makes something out of it.

ince we are old enough
to sit-up, we are con-
stantly debating, dis-
cussing and negotiating over
the want versus need argu-
ment. A child in the grocery
cart when, checking out,
grabs the candy on the shelf
that management chooses to
place there because they
know all too well the out-
come of the dilemma it poses.
Kid grabs candy he doesnt
need, Mom reminds her child
of this and attempts to take it
away and put it back on the
shelf. Kid screams and throws
a tantrum, Mom relents and
gives candy back to child, just
to shut him up and to cease
further embarrassment; store
makes another sale of a high
profit impulse item.
TV advertising addresses
the emotion of how the male
customer will feel behind the
wheel of a new hot, sexy, loud,
exotic-colored muscle car
adorned by scantily clad beau-
tiful babes in bikinis. Does
the intended prospect want or
need that car? Some would
argue, based on the looks of
the male prospect, he may
need a car like that to get a
beautiful babe, but in reality,
we know that the purchase of
that sexy sports car is to ful-
fill a want, not a need. Does
one want or need that ice
cream cone when passing the
ice cream shop on the way
home from work? No, you
just want it!
Over the last 75 years,
American businesses and their
advertising firms have been
programming people to follow
their wants and desires, most
of the time at the expense of
their needs. Recently, in my
life, this want vs. need con-
versation hit close to home.
A few months ago I thought
I wanted a brand new Bentley
for my garage. I went to look
at the newest and greatest 4
door model in New York to
find a beautiful specimen
longing for a new home and
driver. It was returned to the
dealer by the previous owner
after 750 miles in favor of a
new Ferrari. The owner lost
$70,000 doing this, but, if you
can afford a Ferrari, so be it.
His loss was my gain. I was
very excited to call my wife
Terry to tell her the great
news, to which she replied,
You do not need a new
Bentley. I told her no one
needs a new Bentley! Then
she said, You cant afford a
new Bentley. I looked care-
fully at my checkbook and
fired back that I could indeed
afford to buy it. Her retort was
something involving colorful
foreign words, sleeping in
another room and the dog
house. You know what; I real-
ly didnt want a new Bentley
after all!
Yes, there are wants and
needs and they are usually
grossly different. There is
however, one exception to
this rule and that is financial
independence. Everyone
should want to be financially
independent, but, they also
need to be financially inde-
pendent! Financial Indepen-
dence means being able to
live your lifestyle without a
working income paycheck.
Different for everyone; is the
level of paycheck necessary to
be financially independent,
however, monthly cash-flow is
a necessity! When the work-
ing phase of your life is over
because of disability, termina-
tion or retirement, the need
for a paycheck continues.
Some income will be provided
by Social Security if youre
over 65 and some retirees will
receive a pension. Others
must be dependent on their
savings and investments to fill
in the gaps or provide the
lions share of their income
with the dual necessity for
increasing that paycheck to
combat inflation. This need
for a paycheck throughout
your retirement years cannot
be confused with wanting a
paycheck, though it would be
nice if your wants could be
accomplished by the needs
you carefully planned for and
executed!
Let me redirect the ques-
tion! Can your wants and
needs be fulfilled by your cur-
rent or future retirement pay-
check? Do you agree with me
that your need for a guaran-
teed lifetime income must be
satisfied and under your cur-
rent retirement plan, will it
be? Can you guarantee it?
Though no company, product
or individual can guarantee
your financial independence,
there are companies that can
guarantee* you a paycheck
based on your portfolios
greatest performance year,
month or even the very best
performance day of each and
every year, for the rest of your
life and spouses lifetime too.
Some programs guarantee* an
increase in your portfolio-gen-
erated retirement check when
markets go up, even if your
particular account does not,
imagine an investment like
that with your name on it.
This is part of my job, to
demonstrate how you can
accomplish this with your
retirement dollars and I firmly
believe that you need to be
informed and practice this dis-
cipline with at least a portion
of your money.
I dont know about you
but, I do know this, I need a
guaranteed retirement in-
come that affords me the
opportunity to get everything
my wife allows me to want!
When we retire and my guar-
anteed, never ending income
allows me to want a new
Bentley, she wont stop me
from needing it! Until then,
she reminds me of the need to
continue funding our retire-
ment portfolio and she is
absolutely right! I am so
happy she said yes when I
asked her to marry me, 28
years ago. I needed her to say
that!
Dont wait to learn about
the latest and greatest the
retirement planning industry
has introduced to guarantee*
your financial future. There is
no benefit of delay, avoidance
or procrastination. However
there are great rewards in edu-
cating yourself and taking
action. With this thought in
mind, I encourage you to call
me for a no cost, no obligation
consultation today. You need
to do this and its free!

T
hough many people
are quick to refer to
Memorial Day as the
unofficial beginning of sum-
mer, the day is much more
than that. Initially known as
Decoration Day, Memorial
Day is a day to remember
those military members who
died in service of the country.
The origins of Memorial
Day remain a topic of debate.
In 1966, President Lyndon
Johnson declared Waterloo,
N.Y. as the official birthplace
of Memorial Day. However,
the roots of Memorial Day
likely run much deeper, as
researchers at Duke University
note that during the Civil
War, organized womens
groups in the south had begun
to decorate the graves of fallen
soldiers.
Memorial Day as we
know it today can likely be
traced to Charleston, S.C.,
where teachers, missionaries
and some members of the press
gathered on May 1, 1865 to
honor fallen soldiers. During
the Civil War, captured Union
soldiers were held at the
Charleston Race Course and
hundreds died during captivi-
ty. Upon their deaths, soldiers
were buried in unmarked
graves. When the Civil War
ended, the May Day gathering
was organized as a memorial to
all the men who had died dur-
ing captivity. The burial
ground was landscaped, and
those freed as a result of the
Civil War played an integral
role in the event at the
Charleston Race Course.
While the event in
Charleston might have been
the first Memorial Day-type
celebration in the southern
United States, General John
A. Logan is often cited as
inspiring similar events in the
north. As commander-in-chief
of the Grand Army of the
Republic, a veterans organiza-
tion for men who served in the
Civil War, General Logan
issued a proclamation just five
days after the Charleston
event that called for
Decoration Day to be observed
annually across the country.
Logan preferred the event not
be held on the anniversary of
any particular battle, and thus
the day was observed for the
first time on May 30.
Celebrating the day in May
also was significant to event
organizers because May is a
month when flowers are in
bloom, making it easier for
observers of the holiday to
place flowers on the graves of
fallen soldiers.
In 1868, events were held
at more than 180 cemeteries
in 27 states, and those figures
nearly doubled in 1869. By
1890, every northern state
officially recognized Deco-
ration Day as a state holiday.
But southern states honored
their dead on a different day
until after World War I, when
the holiday was changed to
recognize Americans who died
in any war and not just the
Civil War. Nearly every state
now celebrates Memorial Day,
a name for the holiday first
used in 1882, on the last
Monday in May.
The history of Memorial Day
A
new study shows that
blackberries could
lead to healthy gums.
The study states that the anti-
bacterial properties of blackber-
ries lower the risk of gum dis-
ease and promote gum health.
There are also prior stud-
ies that have indicated the pos-
itive aspects of blackberries,
claiming they prevent cancer-
ous cells from spreading.
Many studies have shown
that eating a diet filled with
fruits and vegetables is benefi-
cial to ones health. This type of
diet also lowers the risk of oral
cancer, diabetes, heart disease
and other ailments.
Since good oral health
leads to good overall health, it
can be extremely beneficial for
people to incorporate blackber-
ries into their diets.

T
here are so many differ-
ent and creative ways
for families to show-
case their heritage and honor a
grandparent or other special
senior. Scrapbooks are one such
way to share the life of a special
person and indirectly tell the
tale of your family history.
Very often personal histo-
ry projects are a part of elemen-
tary school curricula, so you
may already have the makings
of a family tree or a family diary
in your home. All it takes is a
little more research and some
planning to design a scrapbook
that can be gifted or kept for
generations to enjoy.
Begin by making an out-
line of what you would like to
cover in the scrapbook.
Perhaps there is a specific event
in a grandparents life that is
worth highlighting, like a mili-
tary tour of duty or a brief stint
in show business. Maybe you
would like to present different
snapshots in time during his or
her life. Either way, planning
out the content of the scrap-
book will make it easier to
gather the necessary elements.
Once youve settled on a
theme, begin your research by
interviewing the eventual
recipient (he or she doesnt
have to know the reason
behind the inquiry.)
During the interview, take
note of key dates and try to
establish the mood of the era
with supporting materials. For
example, you may be able to
find samples of advertisements
from a correlating period in his-
tory or newspaper clippings
that can be used to fluff up the
content of the book.
In the meantime, gather
photos that can be used in the
scrapbook, which may take
some hunting. Prints can be
scanned and copied via a
desktop scanner at home, or
loaded onto a CD or thumb
drive and brought to a phar-
macy photo kiosk. Some spe-
cialty shops can even scan
slides or convert stills from
film into images. Make sure to
make copies of all original
prints and be careful not to
lose or damage the originals.
Scrapbooks can be made
manually with materials pur-
chased anywhere from craft
and hobby stores to stationery
shops. There are a variety of
paper-cutting tools, adhesives,
stickers, labels, and stencils
that can be used to enhance
the look of the scrapbook.
There are also computer soft-
ware programs or online tools
through photo-sharing sites
that enable you to upload
images and text and design
photo books entirely online.
Then the finished product can
be printed out in a variety of
finishes. This method may
actually be preferable for
those who plan to save the
scrapbook or anticipate it
being such a big hit that oth-
ers will want their own copies.
Create a digital file of all
of your information and
copies of images. This way if
you ever want to add to the
scrapbook or reproduce infor-
mation in the future you will
have all of the information at
your fingertips. The scrapbook
also will serve as a good source
material down the line should
future generations want to
learn about their ancestors.
Scrapbooking is more
than just detailing babys first
birthday or a vacation. This
popular pastime can help docu-
ment the life of a special senior.
Historical scrapbooks can honor older relatives

serving in the mili-
tary make consid-
erable sacrifices in defense of
the United States and its cit-
izens. Such sacrifices can eas-
ily be taken for granted by
those with no friends or fam-
ily members serving in the
military, but its important
for all Americans to recog-
nize the efforts of both active
and veteran servicemen and
women.
Honoring active mili-
tary members and veterans
does not have to be an elabo-
rate undertaking. Service
members and their families
often cherish even the sim-
plest of gestures, and the fol-
lowing are a handful of ways
grateful men and women can
show their appreciation to
active and retired members
of the military.
Help a neighbor whos on
active duty. Active duty serv-
ice members can be away from
their families for long periods
of time, and their absence can
make things difficult for their
families. Spouses of deployed
service members are typically
left to manage a household on
their own for months at a
time. Neighbors can show
their appreciation by helping
with some chores around the
house. Offer to mow a neigh-
bors lawn or drive a neigh-
bors kids to school. Such ges-
tures might seem small, but
they can go a long way toward
alleviating some of the stress
that spouses of deployed serv-
ice members deal with on a
daily basis.
Support the Wounded
Warrior Project. Many service
members sustain physical
injuries while deployed. The
Wounded Warrior Project
works to raise awareness and
enlist the publics help to
address the needs of injured
service members. Men and
women who want to show
their appreciation to injured
service members can work
with the Wounded Warrior
Project by volunteering at
project-sponsored events or
hosting fundraising events
such as golf tournaments or
community picnics. More
information about working
with the Wounded Warrior
Project is available at
www. woundedwarri orpro-
ject.org.
Write a letter of apprecia-
tion. One of the simplest
ways to show your support for
service members is to write
them a letter expressing that
appreciation. If a friends, rel-
atives or neighbors are active
service members or veterans,
sit down and write a letter
telling them how much you
appreciate their sacrifice in
service of their country, and
encourage youngsters to do
the same. If you dont know
any members of the military,
you can work with A Million
Thanks (www.amillion-

Exercise your right to vote.
One of the best ways to honor
servicemen and women is to
avoid taking the rights they so
bravely defend for granted.
Members of the military rou-
tinely put their lives on the
line so Americans can enjoy
freedoms that many people
across the globe cannot.
Voting is one such freedom, so
Americans should make it a
point to vote every Election
Day and teach their kids about
the responsibility each
American has to vote and take
an interest in their govern-
ment. Speak with active and
veteran members of the mili-
tary about their thoughts on
proposed legislation and their
opinions on how to improve
that legislation, taking those
opinions into consideration
before casting your vote.

H
umans are not the
only animals that
may get a bit pudgy
around the middle and tip the
scale in the wrong direction.
Mans best friend also may put
on some extra pounds, neces-
sitating a workout plan to get
back into shape.
According to the
Association for Pet Obesity
Prevention, 53 percent of
adult dogs in the United
States are classified as over-
weight or obese by their vet-
erinarians. Yet, pet owners are
sometimes unaware that their
prized pooches are over-
weight.
Overweight dogs and
cats face some of the same
health risks as overweight
men and women.
Musculoskeletal problems,
such as degenerative joint dis-
eases, and back problems have
been linked to obesity, as have
heart disease and respiratory
problems. Diabetes and heat
or exercise intolerance are
other side effects of being
overweight.
But a pets weight is not
the lone indicator of how
healthy the animal is, and the
ideal weight can vary from
dog to dog. A body condition
score is helpful in determining
a pets ideal body weight.
Some indications a dog may
not be at a healthy weight
include:
- a belly that hangs below the
rib cage area
- a belly that moves when the
dog moves, unless the dog is
pregnant or has just given birth
- inability of the owner or vet to
feel the dogs ribs in the rib cage
- a waddle of skin on the neck
of dogs where excess skin isnt
indicative of the breed
- no visual indication of dogs
waist
- inability of the owner or vet to
feel the bones near the base of
the tail
- a less active lifestyle, includ-
ing avoiding exercise and play
- excessive panting
Keeping a dog in shape is
one of the best things you can
do for your pet. But what if
your dog already has packed
on a few unnecessary pounds?
Its time to start a canine fit-
ness routine and follow some
other guidelines.
Talk to your veterinarian.
Obesity could be the result of
eating too much or inactivity,
but it also can be a sign of a
serious condition. If a routine
exam and blood work come up
normal, then you can begin a
plan for helping Fido shed the
weight.
Consider a new food. There
are many different types of
foods on the market, includ-
ing low-calorie options. Some
foods contain extra fiber to
help the dog feel fuller with-
out having eaten as much.
Also, look for foods with lean
protein sources without grains
and other filler.
Break up the feeding sched-
ule. Instead of one large meal
a day, feed your dog two or
three smaller portions of food,
which will help keep his
metabolism going all day long.
Become joint joggers.
Jogging with a dog can
become an enjoyable pastime
that enables you both to get
exercise and stay in shape.
Take up swimming. Many
dogs are natural lovers of
water, and swimming is an
effective, low-impact exercise.
Teach your dog tricks.
Physical tricks, like fetching a
ball or rolling over, can keep
dogs active.
Go for long walks. Take your
dog with you wherever you go.
The more he or she is up and
moving, the less chance there
is to sleep and be lazy.

layground equipment
is a magnet for chil-
dren, and rightfully so.
Kids love playing on swings,
slides and climbing compo-
nents of play-sets on school
properties and at area parks.
While playgrounds are ideal
settings for fun-filled days,
they also carry a certain
degree of risk.
Approximately 20 chil-
dren in the United States die
from playground-related in-
jures every year. More than
half of these deaths result
from strangulation and about
one-third result from falls,
according to the Centers
for Disease Control and
Prevention. But parents can
reduce their youngsters risk
of injury and the severity of
injuries in various ways.
Purchase recommended
safe equipment. Parents
should do their research
when buying playground
equipment. Con-sumers can
check with the Consumer
Product Safety Commission
for any litigation involving
certain manufacturers or any
product recalls. It may cost a
little more to install a top-of-
the-line playground set, but
the peace of mind and
reduced risk of injury is
worth the extra cost.
Invest in adequate surfac-
ing. The CPSC says roughly
60 percent of all playground
injuries result from falls from
the structures. Although no
fall is pleasant, the severity
of injury resulting from a fall
can be greatly reduced
depending on how safe the
surface material surrounding
the equipment is. Blacktop,
concrete or even grass can be
painful to land on. However,
loose-fill materials like pea
gravel, sand, shredded rub-
ber, or mulch can soften falls.
Plus, these materials are rela-
tively low-cost and can be
made from recycled items.
But parents should know that
loose-fill materials must be
maintained to ensure a safe
level of thickness. A depth of
12 inches is often recom-
mended.
Choose an age-appropriate
structure. Injuries frequently
occur when children use
equipment designed for older
kids. Playgrounds are not
one-size-fits-all. There are
specific differences in the size
and stature of younger chil-
dren from older ones, as well
as limitations in younger
childrens development.
Segregated playground areas,
or those with groupings of
equipment recommended for
certain age groups, can help
limit injuries. Pre-school
children need smaller steps
and crawl spaces, while older
children can utilize overhead
bars that maximize upper-
arm strength.

Safely situate equipment.
Consider placing a piece of
playground equipment under
a shady area to keep children
comfortable and safe from
sunburns. Hot equipment
can result in burns and being
out in direct sunlight can
also cause UV damage to the
childrens skin. Structures
should be situated so there
are no obstructions or obsta-
cles to any moving parts.
Select a shorter structure.
Studies show that the greater
the height of a playground
structure the greater the risk
for injury. Choose play-
ground equipment that is
nearer to the ground to pre-
vent serious injuries from
falls and other incidents.
Inspect and maintain the
equipment. Safety measures
must still be taken after the
playground has been erected.
Equipment should be rou-
tinely inspected for damage
and movable parts and joints
should be examined for any
signs of wear and tear. Bolts
should remain tight, and any
hardware that is protruding
should be fixed. S-rings and
other links and chains should
not have gaps where children
can get caught. Wood should
be inspected for splintering
or decay and replaced where
necessary.
Supervise kids at all times.
Children should always be
supervised when playing
on playground equipment,
whether they are playing at
school, at home or in a pub-
lic park. Adults should dis-
courage poor or risk-taking
behavior that increases risk
of injury. Adults also are
urged to keep abreast of
changing structure codes and
guidelines so that equipment
can be adjusted accordingly.

A
patch of dead grass
on an otherwise
lush lawn can be a
frustrating eyesore for home-
owners. Whether lawn care is
your passion or just some-
thing you do to maintain the
value of your home, dead
grass can be exasperating.
But as unsightly as dead
grass can be, addressing it
and restoring the dead patch-
es can be somewhat simple.
Before you can restore grass,
however, you must first iden-
tify the source of the prob-
lem. Grass often dies because
of urine damage, which is
typically characterized by a
dead spot surrounded by oth-
erwise green grass. Grub
infestation might be at fault
when dead grass appears, and
such an infestation often pro-
duces patches of light brown
grass that are scattered
throughout the lawn. Its also
possible that dead grass is a
result of human error. If your
lawn was over fertilized, then
patches of gray-green grass
may appear. Fungal disease is
another common culprit
behind dead grass, and such
disease can manifest itself in
different ways. Once you
have identified why the grass
is dead, which may require
the help of a professional,
then you can begin to treat
your lawn.
Urine damage
Urine damage is often
limited to a particular area of
the grass where your family
pet routinely relieves itself.
Once a particular patch of
grass has worn down, the pet
may move on to another spot.
But if you quickly notice a
dead spot due to urine dam-
age, you can train the animal
to urinate elsewhere, limiting
the damage it causes. When
repairing the grass, dig a hole
thats roughly four inches
deep and fill it with fresh soil
until its level with the soil
surrounding the dead patch.
Then you can sprinkle seed
on top of the freshly laid soil
and water the spot. Grass
should grow in and stay green
so long as you prevent further
urine damage.
Insect damage
Addressing dead spots
caused by insect damage can
be a little more complicated,
and some homeowners may
prefer to hire a professional. If
you want to handle the prob-
lem on your own, apply pesti-
cide to the affected areas so
the insects behind the prob-
lem are killed. Once the
insects are no more, cut the
grass, raking the affected area
to remove the dead grass and
any additional debris. Scatter
grass seed over the affected
areas and then apply an appro-
priate fertilizer and water
immediately. Profess-ionals
may know just the right fertil-
izer for your lawn, so even if
you want to go it alone, visit a
local lawn care center to ask
for advice about addressing
your particular problem.
Fertilizer damage
Fertilizer damage can
also prove difficult to
address, as applying fresh
seeds too soon can kill any
freshly growing seedlings. So
grass that has been damaged
by over-fertilization must
first be allowed to fully die.
Once that has happened, the
grass can be cut and any
remaining debris or dead
grass can be removed. Seed
can then be scattered, and
you can even add some addi-
tional soil before laying down
an appropriate amount of fer-
tilizer and watering the lawn
immediately. If you dont
trust yourself to use fertilizer
correctly, then hire a profes-
sional to do the job for you.
This will cost a little more,
but you likely wont wake up
to more dead patches of grass
down the road.
Dead grass can be
unsightly and turn an other-
wise lush lawn into a patchy
eyesore. But addressing dead
grass can be easy and can
quickly restore a lawn to its
green grandeur.

IS YOUR HOME READY?
DC Landscape Design LLC One of a Kind
continued from page 1
A
dream home means
different things to dif-
ferent people. To
some, an ideal home sits atop a
hill and has enough rooms
to accommodate generations
upon generations of family
members. To others, a home
small in stature but with views
to die for is all a homeowner
needs.
While preferences may
vary on the home itself, there
are a few things buyers of all
shapes and sizes prefer when
shopping for the home of their
dreams.
Agreeable weather. Vacation
home shoppers often prefer
year-round warm weather so
they know their respite from
the cold is never too far away.
For example, a locale such as
Port St. Lucie, Florida boasts an
average temperature of 73.7 F,
providing the ideal getaway to
snowbound men and women
stuck in the throes of winter.
Affordability. A dream home
stays a dream for many people
because of the misconception
that it is beyond their financial
reach. While a seaside villa in
Italy might never be a reality,
there are places where it is still
affordable to own and maintain
a vacation home, says Andrew
Nadalin, President of Pace
2000 Inc. Compared to neigh-
boring counties, St. Lucie
County and Martin County
represent the piece of South
Florida that is still considered
affordable. Endowed with the
rich quality of life South
Florida has to offer, both St.
Lucie and Martin counties also
offer and affordable cost-of-liv-
ing vacationers will appreciate.
Accessibility of activities.
While an escape from the hus-
tle and bustle of everyday life is
great, no one wants to escape
to a place with nothing to do.

eal estate professionals
say the market is
rebounding, and many
would-be home buyers are
eagerly awaiting their oppor-
tunities to purchase their own
homes. Fresh data indicates
that the inventory of proper-
ties is quickly drying up and
soon the market is poised to
point in the sellers' favor.
According to Allen &
Associates, a real estate
appraisal, consultant and
research firm based in
Colorado, properties in the
area listed for sale are below
the six-month supply of
inventory. Now could be the
time to get a good deal on a
home, provided buyers are
able to secure mortgages.
No matter how many
affordable homes are avail-
able, if a buyer cannot get
approved for a mortgage, then
his or her chances of owning a
home are slim. In the wake of
a tumultuous economy, many
lenders tightened restrictions
on mortgage lending. And
even though the economy has
rebounded, many lenders have
continued to follow strict
guidelines before lending
money. In order to secure a
mortgage with a good interest
rate, buyers must take control
of their financial situations
and fix problems that could
lead to loan rejection.
Many things can impact
a mortgage application. Here
are the ways to overcome lia-
bilities and improve your
standing with prospective
lenders.
Know your credit rating.
Your credit rating is a score
that lenders rely on when
deciding whether or not to
approve your mortgage appli-
cation. The higher the credit
rating, the more attractive you
look to prospective lenders.
But the lower your score is,
the more difficulty you will
have getting a loan. Should
you get a loan with a low
score, you may have to pay a
higher interest rate than
someone with better credit.
Prior to making any big finan-
cial decisions, such as apply-
ing for a mortgage, it is vital to
find out your credit score. You
can request a free copy of your
credit report, which includes
your credit score, once a year
from the three major credit
reporting agencies in the
United States and Canada:
TransUnion, Experian and
Equifax. You also can pay for
your credit report.
Address any issues on your
report. Once you know your
score, you can take steps to
address any issues on the
report. Pay down revolving
consumer debts, such as credit
card balances and auto loans.
Report any errors on your
credit report so they can be
adjusted. Pay bills on time and
address any notices of collec-
tions before they make it onto
your permanent record. If you
will be applying for a loan
soon, avoid opening any other
credit accounts for the time
being.
Maintain steady employ-
ment. Having a job is often
vital to getting a mortgage.
Lenders tend to look for long-
term financial stability, which
is best illustrated by maintain-
ing steady employment.
Jumping from job to job may

P
erhaps no dessert dish is
as beloved as the banana
split. And as any good
banana split aficionado knows,
diners often make a great
banana split with fudge sauce.
For those who want to
bring their favorite dessert out
of the diner and into their own
kitchens, its not as hard as it
sounds, and you wont have to
worry about ice cream melting
in the car. Dessert lovers who
enjoy making their own banana
splits should consider the fol-
lowing recipe for Banana Splits
with Hot Fudge Sauce from
Jennifer Joyces Diner
(Ryland, Peters & Small), a
comforting collection of recipes
from the roadside diner.
Banana Splits With Hot
Fudge Sauce
Serves 4
4 small bananas
4 scoops each of strawberry,
vanilla and chocolate ice cream
4 maraschino cherries
cup chopped, toasted pecans
Hot fudge sauce
3 ounces semisweet chocolate,
chopped
cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons butter
cup light corn syrup
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
cup sugar
Whipped cream
1 cup heavy cream
1 tablespoon superfine sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
To make the hot fudge
sauce, put the chocolate, cream
and butter in a medium
saucepan. When melted, add
light corn syrup, vanilla extract
and sugar, stirring constantly
over medium heat. When near-
ly boiling, turn the heat down
to low and simmer for 15 min-
utes without stirring. Let cool
for 5 minutes before using.
To make the whipped
cream, beat the heavy cream
with the sugar and vanilla, and
set aside. Peel the bananas and
cut in half lengthwise. Take the
dessert dishes and along the
sides of each one, put 2 banana
halves. Put one scoop of each
flavor of ice cream between the
bananas. Top with one spoon-
ful of the whipped cream, a
sprinkling of pecans and a cher-
ry on top. Serve with a small
pitcher of the hot fudge sauce
to pour over.
