The Battle of Saratoga is an important turning point in the Revolutionary War. The Battle of
Saratoga led to the French aiding the Colonists, which later led to victory.

war that led to this point

There were actually two separate battles
that took place, which are referred to as
the Battle of Saratoga
It is considered the turning point of the
American Revolution because the victory
of the Continental Army convinced the
French Empire to help fight the British.

Student will be able to
Identify the key details of the Battle of
Saratoga
Describe the reasons that the Battle of
Saratoga is of great importance to the
Revolutionary War
Explain why the Treaty of Alliance
occurred and why it is important to the


outcome of the war.

This lesson plan allows students to learn in a
visual, auditory, and hands-on learning
experiences through videos, reading,
personal reflection, and group project.
Students will be excited and interested in
the topic throughout the lesson as the
media of information will shift throughout.

1. Introduction Warm-Up: Have students think of a time in their life when they noticed a positive
change or outcome (grades improved, sports team won, etc.) Think about why things
changed. What was your reaction to this change? How did this change affect other aspects
of your life? (5 minutes)

3. Have students complete the Reading Comprehension in small groups (partners or teams of 4):

4. Class discussion (10 minutes)
o Why was the Battle of Saratoga the turning point of the war?
o What was the outcome of the Battle? What were the reasons for this outcome?
o Why was the French alliance important? Why did the French agree to help the
Colonists?
5. Have students work in small groups (teams of 4) to complete a poster board summarizing the
key details from the Battle of Saratoga and the Treaty of Alliance.
a) Illustrations/print pictures from the battle, important people, flags
b) Include a map
c) 5 index cards Who? What? When? Where? Why?
