1. Based on the readings of chapters 1 through 6, why does spirit, soul and faith matter in the heart of a leader?
2. Control is an illusion... Its hard to give up even when its not working (p.33). What is the significance of this quote in the chapter titled,
Discovering New Teachers? How has control impacted the leadership that you have experienced/encountered in the field of education?

Jenn, you make a good point about teamwork and control. The absence of trust and "soul" in Steve's leadership makes what he is doing as a
business executive ineffectual. It appears that when leaders become to robotic, without empathy or the ability to connect relationally, they're
more prone to lose an ability to lead and as result the success or momentum to success is gone.
Are there any major connections from last week's articles to this week's reading for you- anything that stands out?

Tahani,
The quote, The heart of true leadership can only be found in the heart of a leader, you selected was one of the most memorable quotes for me
from the beginning chapters of this reading as it solidified to me what I believe I have been taught about understanding principles of leadership.
Were there any other quotes that stood out to you from the first 6 chapters regarding principles of leadership? Good or Bad? If so, why?

Giving up some of the control is a way of finding new teachers.
Dandi, reading your post on the topic of control and letting go of habits that inhibit our ability to lead and allow others to flourish in their roles
was insightful. As Steve is in his beginning struggles to letting go of "past issues" by relinquishing control and Maria in her role to guide Steve,
what do you feel this implies about having mentors in leadership? Do you think it is important as a leader to seek out a "source" to help keep
oneself to operate in spirit, soul and faith?

Round 2 Response to Karilyn

Karilyn,
Your points regarding Maria are insightful to our discussion on leadership, especially when you address how good leaders allow for others to
make mistakes. "She allows him to recognize his failures and learn from them" was a sentence that stood out to me in your writings. I think back
to the jobs that I have had and rarely have my work environments allowed for me to recognize my failures or have made me feel safe enough to
want to make a mistake. I think one aspect of good leadership, as Senge touched on during our first week of readings, is that an organization's
ability to perform and flourish is on its members willingness to have personal mastery and collective growth. A good leader will help create an
environment or lead in such a way that the members are committed to personal improvement, in which such skills will be used for the
betterment of the whole. In my opinion, this capacity/commitment for learning cannot occur without mistakes. Senge agues that this act is what
deepens our personal vision and thus becomes an organization's spiritual foundation. Any additional thoughts?

Jenn,
Your descriptions of Steve and Maria are well articulated.
I too believe that the basis for Steve's control issues are heavily rooted in his fear of failure, which also plays a part in his inability to lead and
tackle issues outside of the "norm." After reading the first six chapters, I was heavily burden by the idea of patience. Not only did Maria
demonstrate patiences in great lengths towards Steve, but Steve began to develop the capacity to tolerate others, himself and concepts. This is
an important aspect of leadership- to be able to delay. This has been the strength of Maria- patiences. She, as you said, has refrained from
giving answers. She doesn't rush.

"It is difficult, though, to manage my desire to control, because I have been conditioned that failure is not an option..."
Karilyn, I could not have written this more accurately for myself! I have noticed a theme in our discussions regarding leadership- CONTROL. As a
leader, the burden of "success" is heavy. Failure is typically not an option for people in leadership positions. But what is failure? What is consider
success?
As you stated you have been conditioned not to fail, I feel the same way. Interestingly, after reading the beginning chapters of Leading with
Soul: An Uncommon Journey to Spirit I began to question how I have been conditioned to lead, handle my success and deal with my failures.
Just as Maria challenged Steve on many levels to evaluate how his leading skills had been formed and how they can be transformed, I too found
myself doing the same. In the end, Steve seemed like a product of our society's model of standard leadership- top down.
Thank you for your willingness to be open about how you identified with Steve, in terms of your strengths and struggles as a leader.

Dandi, you make an important point in terms of not being able to give up a habit even if it makes one inefficient. I appreciate that you discussed
that this is not just an issue of a leader; members of the community (organization, group, club, etc.) can be challenged by this same struggle. As
a leader, it is valuable to be mindful that such problems are humanistic and not compartmentalized strictly for people in charge.
