The 2,000 French and 6,000 African Union troops who are part of FOMAC had been
setting up checkpoints, disarming members of Seleka, and trying to keep the peace between
ethnic groups to the best of their abilities since late of last year. Rumors that the Chadians of
FOMAC were disguised Seleka agents because of the large mercenary presence of Chadians
within the Seleka itself generated distress in some communities. Unfortunately the Anti-Balaka
who were not disarmed took advantage of the situation and targeted Muslims attacking and in
many cases also killing them; while looting and destroying Muslim owned property.
The total death toll is in the thousands and at least 1.3 million people are in need of aid.
There is a possible ethnic cleansing. It was not until April 10, 2014 that UN sent a 12,000 man
force of peacekeepers to the Central African Republic who have been attempting to create peace
and evacuating civilians to refugee camps. The humanitarian aid being provided by Doctors
without borders and WFP and partners have drastically improved the living conditions of
refugees and other displaced civilians by providing food and medicine. Over 6,000 children who
were suffering from mal-nutrition have been treated.
President Michel Djotodia resigned on 10 January 2014 after a CEEAC summit Catherine
Samba-Panza has been elected as the new president of the Central African Republic and was
sworn in on January 23, 2014, before Samba-Panza was president she was appointed the mayor
of the city Bangui. Prior to Samba-Panza's political career she was a business woman and
corporate lawyer. The Seleka have also appointed General Joseph Zindeko as the new head of
the organization only a few days ago was the commander of the rebel base in the capital of
Bangui and is an experienced member of the Seleka movement. Some people believe that they
may gain strength despite being weakened and in disarray; but for now there has been talk
between Seleka members to form a political wing so they would be able to participate in
reconciliation talks.
