INTRODUCTION

MOTIVATION
Motivation is the process that account for an individuals intensity direction
and persistence of effort towards attaining a goal. It is the driving force that keeps
one going towards one's goals.

However, one needs to keep in mind that there are various factors that
keeps one motivated through life, and this varies from person to person. The
factors are neither age specific, nor gender specific. They are simply case specific.
According to various experts is depends on the needs that need to be fulfilled; and
the desires one wishes to accomplish or gain. There are primarily two types of
motivation:

1. Intrinsic Motivation
2. Extrinsic Motivation

Intrinsic Motivation
Intrinsic motivation is something internal - we are motivated to reach our
goal for our own internal benefits.

Extrinsic motivation
With extrinsic motivation, we are motivated by rewards from an external
source - we will be inspired by the recognition that we will get from external
sources.
Theories of motivation
Early theories of motivation
1. Hierarchy of Needs Theory
2. Theory X & Theory Y
3. Two-Factor Theory
4. McClelland’s Theory of Needs
Contemporary Theories of Motivation
1. Cognitive Evaluation Theory

2. Goal-Setting Theory

3. Self-Efficacy Theory

4. Reinforcement Theory

5. Equity Theory

6. Expectancy Theory
MOTIVATION IN SAI (SPORTS AUTHORITY OF
INDIA)
The motivation for participating in sport and striving for improvement is
likely to vary considerably from person to person. Indeed, most people have
multiple motives rather than single reasons. For example, a tennis player might be
attending individual coaching sessions to improve her ranking in order to
demonstrate competence, repay the support of her or his parents and qualify for
more prestigious tournaments offering more prize money! Sometimes these
multiple motives reinforce each other, but at other times they can cause internal
conflicts – as with the young athlete who feels pulled between his athletic career
and his academic studies – and then something has to give.

One of the major difficulties for coaches working with groups of athletes
with diverse motives and goals is to create a motivational climate that facilitates
the development of all these motives – or at least as many as possible. If anyone
tells you this is easy, they are lying. As well as being flexible, you will need to
have a good grasp of some of the fundamental principles of motivation and
knowledge of how to apply them.

Motivation has been defined as ‘the direction and intensity of one’s efforts.
Direction refers to the decision to commit and to turn up to training on a regular
basis. The intensity dimension is about how much people are prepared to give in
each training session.
