Beccas participation in volunteer activities through Troop 253
Child Care for DHS
In 2011 Girl Scout Troop 253 starting providing quarterly child care for children that were in foster care and/or foster parents biological children. This child care was provided at the DHS building. Through these efforts DHS staff was able to provide training for foster parents. The barrier of child care was removed by offering this service on site. Summer Camp In 2011, 2012, 2013 Girl Scout Troop 253 started a girls summer camp in Rifle. This event addressed two presenting needs; the troop was looking for fundraising activities and there was not a summer camp for Girl Scouts on the western slope. The planning and execution of this camp involved many hours. The girls of Troop 253 were charged with planning the activities of the camp through guidance of adults. They were also responsible to run the three day event. This was a huge undertaking. Planning consisted of multiple hours of designing stations for the participants of the camp to rotate through. There were also group activities that were planned including; group games, team building activities, fire camp programs and talent shows. As the girls grew older and became more responsible they ran the stations and all the group activities of the camp. This camp was success for three years and will be continued this year through the efforts of Troop 253 in mentoring a younger troop to take over. Harvest Hay Maze In 2011, 2012 Girl Scout Troop 253 created a hay maze. In an effort to design a fundraising event that was both a benefit to the community and met the need of the troop to earn money the troop designed and implemented a fall hay maze. The girls assisted in the design, construction (many hours), and implementation of a family friendly fall event. In addition the large maze there were activities for children to participate in. Crafts were provided, hay climb, pumpkin painting and games. On Saturday evenings through the month of October the maze turned into a haunted maze and the girls and other volunteers spooked and scared customers as they made their way through the maze. This required a commitment from all members of the troop to help construct and work the maze all weekends through the month of October.
Although these events were meant as fundraisers Becca donated her time and energy to the effort knowing she would not be participating in the activity we were earning money for. I admired her dedication effort and commitment.
