Welcome again to our project Young Journalists on Tour, we are already excited about it and
cant wait to begin. Until then, we have still a little time, but to give you the chance to prepare
everything well, you receive all necessary info that you will need for participating in the project.
For those in a hurry, save time and read bold text only.

ABOUT US
Just for your information and convenience, some words about us: Schloss Trebnitz (the place
where we are staying most of the time) and Kreisau-Initiative are Germany-based NGOs
active in the field of youth and adult education. We cooperate for years already mostly in the
field of sustainable development. Please visit our homepages: www.kreisau.de / www.schloss-
trebnitz.de for more information.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Young Journalists on Tour is one of our project classics and has been conducted several
times already in Poland and Germany, some of you have been participants in earlier editions.
The basic idea is, that young persons interested in media, students of journalism or
communication studies, bloggers or the like come together, learn about journalism and
sustainability, and apply their knowledge during a research trip. In the last days of the
projects, texts will be produced in small groups for publication.
This years topic is football and sustainability. In workshops and during research trips, we
discover links between these seemingly disparate worlds: Between global sports and global
economy, sustainable projects and initiatives around the stadiums, and outcomes for former
host cities to major sport events. Here is a link to the concept paper for complete information:

Topics: Journalism, Sustainable Development
Project Language: English

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
As you know, sustainable development is the core topic of our project and will be discussed in
workshops. Of course, there is not a single valid definition of the term, and to many, it is actually
not very clear what sustainability means; especially in the media, you see the term used very
frequently as a well-sounding buzzword without much reflection on its content. We do not want
to dictate a perfect answer for that, but rather would like to discuss with you what your
understanding of sustainable development is and try to broaden your insight into the topic. To
achieve this, we would like to ask you to do research beforehand and find information
and/or articles about sustainable development in your home city/home region. This can
be anything from a eco-friendly tourism project to a neighborhood community with unusual and
creative living ideas to a social football project for local youth you can be as creative as you
want. Sustainability comes in many shapes, and it would be nice to see a whole kaleidoscope
of different sustainable project ideas from all over Europe at the project.

JOURNALISM
The second big topic of the project is obviously journalism, as you all have some professional
or voluntary experience with media. Again, we focus a lot on exchange of ideas instead of
teaching, because in our experience you learn so much more from each other than from a guy
standing next to a blackboard. From your feedback in the registration forms we learned
something about your previous experiences, which we want to use to structure the program
according to your needs and wishes. Please find the preliminary program in the attachment, if
you are missing something, or want to propose changes, visit our project organization
etherpad: http://pad.jugendinfo.de/cUoyw6uWxD and leave your comments/questions there.
We are looking forward to your contributions!
The main product of our work will be a project publication, similar to last years project
newspaper http://tinyurl.com/m9cpykj and project blog www.yjot.tumblr.com respectively. For
us, your articles are the most important outcome of the project, and since we want to honor
your hard work, we want to put it in a publication which you all can be proud of. During the
project, we will be discussing how we want the newspaper to look like, and what articles
everyone wants to write, according to their skills and preferences. It is very much encouraged
to form cross-border research teams where two people research material for one article
both in Poznan and in Berlin.
As a special guest there will be Fabian, a staff member of German TV (ARD) in Sochi.
Being a quite young person himself, Fabian can tell us something about being a young
professional in journalism, and give us some first-hand experience from the backstage of
a global sport event.

RESEARCH TRIPS
As you know, during two days of the project, we will separate in two small groups and make
field trips to Berlin and Pozna, respectively. Both field trips will be organized by
coordinators who know local initiatives, NGOs, and other organizations around the topics of
football, sports and sustainability. We will have in each city two or three meetings with official
representatives, after which you will be researching in small groups for your articles according
to what you need. For those of you with visa: It is no problem to travel to another EU country
since your visa is valid for the whole Schengen area, so dont worry about that.
Of course we will try to respect our preferences to which city you want to travel, but please
understand organizatorical issues: both groups need to be more or less equal in size, and in
both groups we need some native speakers who can act as translators for the rest.
The program for the two trips will be sent to you about two weeks before the start of the
project, so that you can make up your mind about where you want to go. In general, we
organize two or three meetings with official representatives of sport clubs, city administration,
etc., to get an overview over the field and some basic informations. Then, you can choose
from a list of contacts and organizations, which you will contact individually. Please find the
preliminary programs as well as the list of organizations attached.
In Berlin, we will be staying again in Aletto (see address below). In Poznan, we will be in
Cinnamon Hostel:
Gwarna 10/2
61-703 Poznan, Poland
http://poznan.cinnamonhostel.com
poznan@cinnamonhostel.com
The transport to/from both Berlin and Poznan will be organized by us, so you dont have to
worry about that.

TEAM
Three persons are responsible for your well-being during the project:
Agnieszka: She works and lives in Wrocaw, Poland. She studied Psychology in
Poland and Cinema Studies in Prague. She worked at Krzyowa
Foundation for Mutual Understanding in Europe as program manager
and is now self-employed trainer and project manager. Her job is to
coordinate the program on the ground, with focus on workshops in
sustainable development.
Max: Max will be responsible for all journalistic workshops. He works for
German radio Station Deutschlandfunk and has lots of experience with
Journalism and teaching. He will also support you by individual
counseling with your articles.

Vinzenz: Vinzenz is the organizing person in the background and is responsible
for project infrastructure, general issues, visa and the like.
Additionally, we will have two specialists organizing the field trips to Berlin (Frank) and Pozna
(yet another Agnieszka ), and a visiting lecturer on Sunday, Fabian.

ALETTO HOSTEL BERLIN/SCHLOSS TREBNITZ
During the project, we will be doing quite some travelling, so try to limit your baggage to a size
which you are comfortable carrying around. For your convenience, we will meet in Berlin and
stay there for the first night of the project (26.4.).

Upon your arrival in Berlin, please report to:

Aletto Hostel Kreuzberg
Tempelhofer Ufer 8 9
10963 Berlin
kreuzberg@aletto.de
Tel.: +49 30 259 304 80

Please note that Aletto has several houses in Berlin, make sure you reach the right one.
Here is a link to their location on google maps: https://goo.gl/maps/G2aIG
As you can see, there are some subway stations close by, so dont worry, it is easy to find and
to reach. Plus, we will have the chance to relax from the travel and discover one of Berlins
most vibrant quarters in the evening
For those of you who live in Berlin: If you prefer to stay the first night at your place,
please send me a short email. Despite of this, we would expect you to participate in the
regular program during the first day, of course.
In the morning of the 27th, we will travel as a group to Trebnitz, where the major part of
the project will be held.
Adress of the Hostel:
Schloss Trebnitz Bildungs- und Begegnungszentrum e. V.
Platz der Jugend 6
15374 Mncheberg OT Trebnitz
Tel. 033477 519-0 (Zentrale)
Fax: 033477 51915

We will be located in a nice palace-like estate in a small village about 45 km outside of Berlin.
It is in general a great place for projects: Lots of space, a nice park next door with a little pond,
friendly staff, and a nice cosy atmosphere. Check out the picture gallery and description of the
place here: http://www.schloss-trebnitz.de/en/gebaude/gutsanlage/
You will be located in 3-4 bed rooms mostly with private bathrooms. Dont expect hotel
standard; rather a solid, relatively good youth hostel. Of course, meals are provided (cold
breakfast buffet, warm lunch, cold/hot dinner buffet). In case you havent done it already,
please tell me if you have any special dietary requirements (vegetarian/vegan, allergies,
etc).

Also there is a little shop nearby, where you can buy groceries and some other basic
products, but if you need something special, make sure you get it in Berlin before our departure
to Trebnitz.

PHOTOS AND VIDEOS
On our projects, we as well as participants usually shoot lots of pictures, and sometimes videos
as well. For us, these pictures are really important to our work, since we document our work,
and use it for advertisement of our projects. This we can do only if you are OK with it. On the
next page, you find a media consent form, which allows us to publish pictures of you (print or
online). In practice, we are very restrictive with photos and use them strictly for project-related
activities only. That means:
We do not sell the rights to the pictures, use them for advertisement (other than our
own projects and activities) and do not try to yield any commercial gain
We do not publish compromising pictures which might be potentially unfavorable for
those visible on the photo
Your consent nonwithstanding, we take down any of your photos upon request without
discussion.
If you are OK with these rules, please fill in the media consent form (on the next page). If you
dont want to be filmed, or photographs of you taken, thats OK with us. In that case, please
remind the photographer politely in case someone is taking a picture of you accidently. In our
experience, with good will and cooperation, usually we find a way to respect all the different
opinions on this issue.

TRAVELLING TO BERLIN
I hope that you have already planned and/or booked your travel to Berlin. As you know, you
are eligible for a max. 70% refund of travel costs with an upper limit of 150 EUR
(Germany/Poland), 200 EUR (Ukraine) 300 (Moldova) for a round trip (that means, I can
refund max. 70% of that respective sum to each person). In general, I always try to get you
as much reimbursement as possible, and some redistribution is possible if someone spends
less that his/her share of the reimbursement funds, but you can help me a great deal if you try
to get cheap deals on your travel (also, of course, your share of the bill will be smaller too).
To get the reimbursement you need to fill in the reimbursement form attached to this mail
during or after the project. Find an example form here with some hints on how to fill it in:
http://tinyurl.com/of8342s (5 mb pdf document, might take a while to load).
Make sure you fill in everything correctly, during the project, there will be time for counseling
and questions. In any case, make sure you attach all the original travel documents in case
you use an airplane that means both boarding passes and itinerary recipes. Without the
originals, I wont be able to reimburse you the amount.
For participants from Ukraine and Moldova: To save transaction costs, we decided to
transfer the reimbursement in one transaction to your team leaders account. From there, it will
be distributed to your individual accounts. That means, that I can make the transaction only
when I have received all reimbursement forms, so be fair and send it to me right after the
project.
