12th Annual

Kenny Monnier Memorial

Set June 21 at Stillwater Golf Club
The Kenny Monnier Memorial Golf Tournament was established in 2003, three months after Kenny
Monnier lost his long battle with cancer. He was an avid golfer and this tournament honors his memory.
The sole purpose of the tournament is to raise money for local families battling this horrible disease. The
tournament donates 100 percent of all money raised to local area recipients whose names are submitted to
Bobby Floyd or Beener Wood. Quite a few names have already been submitted, so we all must work just
as hard this year to help them in their battle.
This tournament has helped over 85 families over the past 11 years and over $115,000 has been raised
to help those in need. With your support, we can continue helping those families who need it the most and
help contribute towards their fight with cancer.
Times are tough, but with your help we can continue this awesome event. Time is limited to have
your sign made, so dont hesitate and miss out. Any donations are appreciated and you or your business
are given an opportunity to sponsor a hole the day of the tournament.
Headline sponsors are also sought for the upcoming year. Hole Sponsor: Business Minimum of $25
to unlimited. In Memory Of... $25 to unlimited. General donations are accepted, as well. Door prizes
or items to raffle are very much appreciated.
Please make checks payable to Kenny Monnier Memorial. They should be sent to 746 N. High St.,
Covington, OH 45318.
With a donation you are invited to the banquet on June 21, following the golf outing at 1 p.m (Stillwater
Valley Golf Course) to see firsthand how your generosity has been distributed to the recipients.
If you have any questions, please call Bobby Floyd at 937-541-1238, or Ralph (Beener) Wood at 937417-0768.
The Kenny Monnier Memorial is a non-profit organization. Thank you for your support!

THANK YOU!!!
The 2014 Bucc Bash was a tremendous success. Over 300 were in attendance and over $12,000 was raised!
The funds will be put to good use, supporting initiatives such as: CHS Honors Banquet, PLUS organization,
Dollars for Scholars scholarships, CES Safety Patrol, CMS Mental Math and Oratorical contests, Halloween
activities, All-Star advertisements, as-needed game and practice wear, sports equipment, food and transportation
for state competitions, the Dan Kendig Memorial Golf Tournament, and track and field maintenance, just to
name a few.
We deeply appreciate the generosity and support of the community and want to thank everyone who attended the event, all of the volunteers who gave their time to make the event a success, and the local businesses
and community members listed below who contributed items to the auction. Please thank them by supporting

Valley Echoes
by Gary Godfrey

Were In the State of Unsocial Media

I recently watched a YouTube video entitled, Look Up 30 days without Social Media.
I then thought of my grandchildren and great-grandchildren who all own iPhones, ipads, or mini ipads.
Some of them have all three available.
The video is about kids who constantly keep their heads down while texting friends, watching videos,
or playing games. I will also remind you that some adults are also addictive to this behavior that has
become the norm.
The challenge in this video is for everyone to look up and go 30 days without their electronic friends.
But dont take the producers word; just watch everyone while youre out doing what you need to do.
Youll be amazed at the heads down.
What we need is for everyone to look into each others eyes. There are some people who talk to you
one on one, and never look into your eyes.
Social media should be called unsocial media. How can kids be sitting at the same lunch table and
still not talk to each other, but all of them texting at the same time? Even to the person sitting directly
across from the table!
The video shows a young male adult stopping a young female for directions. From here, the film captures their entire life, including children, just because they look into each others eyes.
The next time youre in an airport or restaurant, stop and watch the people around you. Look and see
what technology has created. Weve become a world of non-social existence. Everyone is looking
down.
Starting with yourself, go out into the world and leave that phone, ipad, or laptop behind. Create a
healthy conversation with the person next to you. And please, dont forget to look into their eyes.
ThIS WEEkS boTToM lInE: If I see one more driver texting while driving their car with their
knees, Im going to scream!! Then call the police.
Now we're e-mailing and tweeting and texting so much, a phone call comes as a fresh surprise. I
get text messages on my cell phone all day long, and it warbles to alert me that someone has sent
me a message on Facebook or a reply or direct message on Twitter, but it rarely ever rings.

150th Anniversary Celebration

Announced by CFC Worship Center
As the days flash past, faster and faster, a long standing West Milton church is taking a pause in time to reflect on where it once was,
where its congregation now worships, and what lies ahead.
Many years ago, a small number of devout Quakers came west
looking for a peaceful place to worship and spread the word about
Jesus Christ. They were hungry for a personal relationship with God.
With dual missions of friendship and love, CFC Worship Center,
the modern day home of local Quakers, has grown in numbers, fallen
in membership, and rebounded to flourish, time and again. Today, the
center is housed in a modern facility west of West Milton on St. Rt.
571.
Many are surprised to learn that Quakers even exist in modern society. In fact, todays Quakers are very similar to many other modern
day Christians and no longer wear bonnets or broad-brimmed hats.
If you would like to learn more about Quakers and how the CFC

Worship Center has evolved into what it is today, please plan on attending the 150th Anniversary Celebration to be held June 22.
This one-day event will begin with a 9:30 a.m. Worship Service,
followed by a program of special events commencing at 2 p.m. Highlights of some of the activities planned for this gala event include guest
speakers, Doug Shoemaker, General Superintendent of Indiana Yearly
Meeting, and Gary Wright, president, World Renewal International.
Music will be provided by the Trinity Quartet, with food served in
the evening.
For those looking for a warm and friendly church to attend, where
everybody is somebody and Jesus Christ is Lord, please contact Pastor Duane Cox at 937-698-3114, or simply drop in for a visit. The doors
are always open to those seeking fellowship and personal growth.

Book Publishing Workshop Draws Large

Attendance from Local Pool of Writers
On Thursday, Jan. 23, the Milton-Union Public Library

Kelsey Swindler of Orange Frazer Press gave information on book publishing and provided information on the
many publishing options available. Kelsey also helped answer specific questions and many attendees walked away
with a better knowledge and resources to approach any publishing scenario with confidence.
Kelsey plans to
return this fall for another publishing workshop. Stay tuned
for more details on this upcoming event.

After a quarter of a century working dependably at Versailles Health Care Center, Arlene Manning of
Bradford recently retired. She joined VHCC in 1987 as a laundry aide and worked most of her years in
that department. For the last two years, she worked in housekeeping in the Special Care Unit. Ive seen
a lot of changes over the years, Manning said, but probably the biggest is how much the therapy department has grown, which I had to take advantage of two
years ago.
When asked about her time at Versailles Health Care
Center, Manning said, I will miss all of the residents
and my co-workers. Thanks to everyone who helped
make my years here enjoyable! She and husband Earl
are the proud parents of two children, Amy and Jody, and
also have four grandchildren.
Manning said with a smile, Im looking forward to
a new chapter in my life, spending more time with relatives and friends, taking better care of myself, getting
more use out of our pool table, and having more fun!
A farewell carry-in luncheon was held by her coworkers at the center. Jean Unger, Director of Housekeeping and Laundry, said We will miss Arlene. She
was a hard worker and very devoted to Versailles Health JEAN UNGER, Director of Housekeeping
& Laundry, and retiree Arlene Manning
Care Center. Congratulations Arlene!

Mary Lacy Retires from VHCC

After 23 years working devotedly in the Dietary
Department at Versailles Health Care Center, Mary
Lacy of North Star recently retired. Lacy, 66, joined
VHCC in 1990 as a dietary aide. She commented
that there have been lots of changes over the years.
When I started here, this was only a 50-bed facility. Now, after two expansions, we have 105 beds.
When asked about her time at VHCC, Lacy
said, I have really enjoyed visiting and talking with
the residents over the years. I will miss everyone.
In addition to spending time with her five grandchildren, Lacy enjoys reading and gardening.
MARY LACY (left) and Paula Varvel, DiA farewell carry-in luncheon was held by her
rector of Dietary Services
co-workers at the health care center. Paula Varvel,
Director of Dietary Services, said, Mary will be
greatly missed by her co-workers. She did an excellent job for VHCC and we give her great thanks for her
contribution to the residents and families.
