This 14-week undergraduate course provides an introduction

to the anatomy, physiology, nutrition and behavior of the horse.
Management techniques and practical aspects of horse care
(including stabling, shoeing/hoof care, common diseases and
emergency care) will be discussed in classroom lectures and
extensive notes will be available on-line. In addition to the
classroom lectures and demonstrations, optional eld trips will be
oered throughout the program schedule.
To assist those who might not be able to travel to New Brunswick
or whose schedule does not allow in-person attendance on a
weekday morning, the course has been designed so it may be
taken on-line. On-line attendees will have access to all lecture
and supplemental information provided to the in-class participants
and there will be two weekly on-line chat sessions with Dr.
Ralston to discuss the material covered in the lectures. These
sessions will be scheduled at the start of the semester at a time
which is convenient for the group. On-line registrants always have
the option to participate in eld trips and demonstrations and
even the classroom portion of the course - as their schedule
permits. To access the on-line course and notes, you must
provide an e-mail address at the time of registration so we can
enter you into Rutgers E-classroom system. Please note that the
on-line course notes and materials have many videos and photos
and high speed internet access is required to fully benet from
them; access using dial-up connections will be very frustrating, if
not impossible.
Who Should Attend?
This course is designed for potential horse owners, new horse
owners and horse enthusiasts. As an undergraduate course that is
extended to continuing education students, a high school diploma
is required. If you register as a continuing education student, you
will receive up to 3.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and a
certicate, rather than undergraduate college credit.
