The road and paving work is consisted of the following items which include new construction,
demolition and restoration works.
- Concrete road
- Concrete pavement
- Gravel paving
2. APPLICABLE CODES AND STANDARDS
2.1 GENERAL
In principle, the following codes and standards shall apply for the selection of material, testing
and workmanship. However, with consideration of local availability, the alternative can be
adopted with J PIs approval.
If there is a conflict or discrepancy between codes, standard and this specification, this
specification shall be preferred to others.

4. MATERIALS
4.1 CONCRETE
Cement shall comply with ASTM C 150 Type I or equivalent.
4.2 WELDED WIRE FABRIC
Welded wire fabric shall comply with ASTM A497 or J IS G3551 or equivalent.
4.3 EXPANSION AND ISOLATION JOINT
J oints shall comply with ASTM D1751 or ASTM D1752 or equivalent.
4.4 JOINT SEALANT
J oint sealant shall comply with ASTM D1190 or equivalent.
4.5 RED COLORED CONCRETE
As per manufacture's recommendation.
4.6 GRAVEL
As per manufacture's recommendation.
5. SUBGRADE
(1) Sub-grade shall be prepared by cut or fill, and leveled as indicated on the drawings. The
finished sub-grade shall be subject to J PI's approval prior to commencing the construction of
the subsequent course.
(2) For the compaction of suitable sub-grade steel wheel roller or similar with minimum capacity
3.2 ton based on ASTM D 4429 shall be used.
(3) Compaction work should be suspended during rain. In such cases, care shall be taken to
provide temporary drainage so that the work can be resumed promptly after the rain stops.
(4) The subgrade level for paved areas shall be cleaned of mud or slurry. Ruts or other
deformations shall be trimmed and any soft spots that may have developed and replaced with
suitable fill materials and shall be re-rolled until the surface is hard , smooth and uniformly
compacted.
(5) The subgrade level shall be properly shaped to the required profile by proper machine and
shall be rolled and compacted 90% of max. dry density as determined in the ASTM D 1557.
(6) Construction traffic shall be prohibited from the finished formation.

6. CONCRETE ROAD AND PAVING
6.1. CONSTITUTION OF ROAD
Cross section of road shall consist of the following sketch:
J ob No. : Owner Doc. No
*** PROJ ECT Doc. No. : S-000-3117-001<Rev. >

CONST. SPEC. FOR ROAD AND PAVING WORK SHEET 5 OF 7

Surface course : Pavement structure supporting the traffic load
Base course : Layer used to support the surface course
Subgrade : Constituted of the natural ground or of backfilled soil materials. The
vegetal top soil shall be removed in the case of subgrade at natural
ground level.
6.2. SURFACE COURSE
(1) Concrete work used as surface course shall be refered as per Construction Specification for
Concrete Work (S-000-3120-001).
(2) Thickness of concrete road shall be 150 mm and thickness of concrete paving shall be 100 or
150 mm depending on area classification of paving as shown on drawing.
(3) Concrete shall be installed with welded wire fabric as shown on the drawings. Welded wire
fabric shall extend to within 40 mm of the edge of slab. The size of the welded wire fabric is
6x150x150 (mm) and the lap length is approximately 200 mm.
(4) Generally, curing shall be conducted for five days after surface finishing. During curing, the
surface shall be always maintained in a wet and smooth condition and be protected from rain,
wind, direct sunlight, temperature, loads, impacts and other adverse influences. Great care
shall be given to the curing for about 12 hours after surface finishing. Water absorber material
shall be used for curing.
(5) Surface shall be finished by using a steel trowel as a rule. Finished surfaces shall be true
plane surfaces ( for paving area that will be chemical lined). For road paving surface shall be
finished with steel float or broom. Where necessary, J PI will instruct others in the field.
(6) The surface shall be finished level, free from separation and cracking and precisely to the
prescribed gradient to run toward the low point of paving during rain or surface washing. In
particular, the sections contacting drip funnels, cable ducts, pipe trenches, manholes, catch
basins, etc., shall be finished with special care.
(7) Red oxide to be used on the cable protection tile and concrete paved cover for cable trench
shall be spreaded with 0.5 kg of red oxide per square meter.

Base course (crushed stone 150mm thick, CBR 80)

6.3. BASE COURSE
Base course shall consist of crushed stone and 150 mm thick layers. For paving with concrete
surface course 100 mm thk, the layer shall be 100 mm thk.
Aggregate size complying with the requirements as below:
Sieve Base Percentage Passing by
Weight
(ASTM) (J IS Z8801)

6.4. EXPANSION/ISOLATION JOINT
(1) Expansion joints shall be securely held in position during spreading and compaction of the
concrete. Before sealing the joints any accumulated dust or grit shall be removed from the
groove. J oint sealing compound shall be prepared and applied in accordance with the
manufacturers instructions and shall fill the groove completely.
(2) Expansion joints shall be straight and vertical through the full thickness of the slab and shall
occur at high points and low points of paving and elsewhere as shown on drawings.
(3) Isolation joints shall be formed around bases, plinths, piers, manholes, catch basins or any
other like structure that passes through the slab unless otherwise shown on the foundation or
paving drawings.

drawing. The thickness of gravel paving shall be 100 mm.
(2) The materials of gravel paving shall be made of crushed stone or uniform gravel which shall
have a maximum size of 30 millimeters.
8 TEST AND INSPECTION
8.1 GENERAL
Before proceeding with the subsequent layer and after completion, layer of the area paving shall be
inspected and approved by J PI. The test reports shall be submitted to J PI for check and approval.
