Record Crops, Lower Prices Ahead

The estimated 2014-15 corn crop is slated to be record large at 13.935 billion bushels, up slightly
from last years 13.925, according to USDAs latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates
(WASDE). With decent weather, soybean production, too, will bust bins at a record 3.635 billion
bushels, according to the estimates.
"Compared to the February Ag Forum numbers, this report look a bit more rosy," says Chad Hart,
agricultural economist at Iowa State University. "In February, USDA was projecting an average
new-crop corn price of $3.90. This report
puts it at $4.20. USDAs estimated average
bean price in February was $9.65. This puts
it at $10.75."
Still, both corn and soybean prices will be
substantially lower than the past several
years. For corn, higher expected yields this
year will offset a reduction in planted area,
says USDA. The department expects the
U.S. average corn yield to come in at 165.3
bushels per acre, up 6.5 bushels from last
year. The forecast assumes normal mid-May
planting progress and summer weather.
"USDA is using a really large yield for corn, and they havent added in any more acres, says Peter
Georgantones, analyst with Roy E. Abbott Futures in Minneapolis. He was the commentator on the
post-report MGEX press call. Georgantones expects USDA to eventually add another 1 million to
2 million acres of corn plantings to the 2014-15 balance sheet.
"If any troubles in corn cause USDA to take 10 bushels off the yield estimate, there could be
tightness in the corn market pretty quickly," says Georgantones.
Corn Supplies Break 15 Billion Bushels. Corn supplies for 2014-15 are projected at a record
15.1 billion bushels, which is 330 million more than last year. USDA expects U.S. corn use to drop
2% below a year earlier. With animal numbers smaller than a year ago, feed and residual use is
projected to be 50 million bushels lower than last year. Corn exports are expected to be 200 million
bushels lower than current-year exports as world supplies grow and demand softens. Corn used to
produce ethanol is expected to be unchanged from this year.
Lower demand and higher production leaves the 2014-15 estimated corn ending stocks at 1.7 billion
bushels, up 580 million bushels from the projection for 2013-14. The larger carryout is expected to
pressure the farm price to $3.85 to $4.55 per bushel, down from $4.50 to $4.80 for old-crop.
Soybeans to Dip Below $10 per Bushel.Soybean production is also projected to be a record
3.635 billion bushels, up 346 million from the 2013-15 crop. USDA estimates that the average U.S.
soybean yield will be a record 45.2 bushels per acre, or 1.9 bushels higher than last year. Total
2014-15 soybean supplies are projected at 3.78 billion bushels, up 7.4% from last year.
The U.S. new-crop soybean crush is projected at 1.715 billion bushels, a 20-million bushel increase
over last year, reflecting increased domestic soybean meal consumption. Increased supplies and
lower prices, however, will not help U.S. soybean meal exports as Argentina fills most of the
worlds import demand. U.S. soybean exports, however, should remain robust at an expected 1.625
billion bushels, 25 million bushels more than this year due to record supplies and competitive prices.
Keep in mind, these folks are doing a lot of estimating.

PROPOSED DAMS ON THE UPPER HUDSON RIVER
A PRESENTATION BY MIKE PRESCOTT- The Warrensburgh Historical Society is hosting a
presentation by historian Mike Prescott on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 7:00 pm in the Richards Library
Community Event Room. Mike Prescott will describe the various attempts to harness the Upper
Hudson River from late 1800s to the mid-1960s. Mike is an avid canoe paddler and he has written
about proposed dams on the Schroon River and proposed dams on the Upper Raquette River. He is
presently working on dams proposed along the Sacandaga and the Moose Rivers. Most of these dams
would have been constructed to alleviate flooding in the spring and to prevent droughts in the summer
and fall, others would have provided hydroelectric power. If these dams had been constructed, the
Adirondacks we know and love would look far different. Mike often jokes, Someone has to be the
dam historian.

DIRECT CARE TRAINING CLASSES- Gateway House of
Peace has finally opened its doors and accepted our first resident
as of April 17! Though the hard work of opening our doors has been
completed with the help of our generous community, Gateway is
still always in need of more direct care volunteers. Gateway House
of Peace is offering its next direct care training class on Saturday,
May 17 from 911 a.m. at 479 Rowland Street in Ballston Spa.
The class is free and welcome to all! Contact Patti Veitch at (518)

CLEO THE CLOWN WALKING FOR THE CURE
CHALLENGE Thursday, May 15th Starting at 10:00am at
Bennington Elementary School. Total distance to be walked is 4 1/
2 miles, in clown shoes, no less. Cleo is challenging all staff and
students in Bennington School District to contribute $1.00 to go
towards the Cancer Cure. Each school will use the money they
raise towards their school's contribution. (She is also looking for
volunteers to walk with her) This is a great opportunity to show
your support for our own Cancer Center. For more information
you can contact Carol Morin at 802-442-3743 or 802-442-5256. I
hear that she is somehow related to Cleo, but that is only a rumor

General store, bait store, liquor store
WHY I LIKE THEM
The Lakeside General store is a relatively new busi-
ness. The owners have totally renovated the space
and it is now cozy, welcoming, and beautifully deco-
rated each season. They carry general groceries
and live bait on one side and operate a liquor store
on the other side. The grocery side also has fabu-
lous handmade bread, pastries and sandwiches and
delicious coffee. Their prices are good and the staff
is friendly and always says thanks for coming in. I
make sure to stop in at least once a week!
So be sure to check them out on
Facebook or give them a call and help
support our local businesses!

CHEESE AND SPIRITS- Nettle Meadow Farm, a goat and
cheese dairy, that produces highly-acclaimed and award-winning
cheeses, invites regional makers of wine, beer and cider to partici-
pate in a cheese and spirits pairing in the loft of the farms historic
barn on Saturday, June 7, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Almost mid-way
between Lake George and Gore Mountain/North Creek, the pair-
ing, coupled with Martins Lumber Woods Walk held nearby ear-
lier in the day, should draw a significant number of tourists from
both regions. Those interested in showcasing their beverages should
contact the organizers as soon as possible in order to be listed on
the event website and in other advertising and so Nettle Meadow
can find suitable cheeses to pair with each beverage. Please email
Cheese@NettleMeadow.com or PersisGranger@aol.com to indi-
cate interest and obtain more details. Participants will be required
to display appropriate permits at the event. The Nettle Meadow
Cheese and Wine Pairing will raise money the Thurman Station
Association, a not-for-profit group that organizes a variety of visi-
tor events throughout the year to promote local agri-business.
14TH ANNUAL BALLOON FESTIVAL- The Cambridge com-
munity is gearing up for its 14th Annual Cambridge Valley Balloon
Festival, set for Friday, June 6 through Sunday, June 8, 2014, in
and around the beautiful historic village of Cambridge, NY. The
Cambridge Valley Chamber of Commerce, organizer of the event,
is putting together the schedule of activities, which will include four
launches of 10 hot air balloons (Friday & Saturday evening and
Saturday & Sunday morning). All launches take place at the Cam-
bridge Central School on Route 22 (wind and weather permitting).
Evening launches typically occur around 7 p.m.; morning launches
at 5:30 a.m. Between the launches, the Cambridge community
throws out the red carpet and provides a myriad of activities to
entertain the crowds. Community businesses, through the Cham-
ber, host a fantastic fireworks display on Friday evening at the
Cambridge Guest Home Park on South Union Street. On Saturday,
the Chamber organizes a Taste of Cambridge at the same loca-
tion to showcase local food producers and restaurants. The Taste
is followed by the annual Moon Glow, a spectacular night time
display of tethered hot air balloons that are lit from inside in time to
music. Sunday brings an end to the official festival activities with a
Pilots Breakfast (location to be announced). This is a great oppor-
tunity to meet the pilots and discuss the details of ballooning with
the experts. Local organizations augment the festival with activi-
ties to entertain crowds between the launches and to showcase the
Cambridge community. At the school location there are rides, car-
nival games, food vendors, and sporting events. In the Village, ac-
tivities such as craft fairs, farmers markets, museum tours, con-
certs, car show and gallery events occur. Information will be
posted on the Chamber website at www.cambridgenychamber.com
as it is finalized and details become available. The Chamber will
also distribute a commemorative program and a schedule of events
in May. Festival themed merchandise is available for sale begin-
ning in late May. These items support the festival and make it pos-
sible for most activities to occur free of charge. Sponsors are also
