COURSE DESCRIPTION
SPAN 101-AO1 is a three-credit asynchronous distance learning course for beginning students of Spanish, and completes part of
the basic language requirements for most majors in CHSS and COS. Combined with SPAN 102 this course is equivalent to SPAN
110. This asynchronous online course is designed to help students develop basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in
Spanish and to provide them with an introduction to the various cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. In this course, students
will:
1. synthesize the acquired vocabulary and sentence structures to broaden oral and written comprehension;
2. strengthen their ability to express ideas orally and in writing with an appropriate level of grammatical accuracy and
fluency focusing on both presentational and interpersonal modes of communication;
3. demonstrate a certain level of knowledge and critical understanding of the products, practices and perspectives of the
Spanish-speaking world;
4. understand speech used by native speakers;
5. Increase their ability to use online tools to communicate and learn

This online course is taught via Blackboard Courses (Log into http://mymason.gmu.edu, select the Courses Tab, and the course
can be found in the Course List). This course is offered completely online. Each week begins on Monday and ends on Sunday. In
our online learning community, we must be respectful of one another. Please be aware that innocent remarks can be easily
misconstrued. Sarcasm and humor can be easily taken out of context. When communicating, please be positive and diplomatic. I
encourage you to learn more about Netiquette.

As a distance learning course, SPAN 101 requires students to study and practice the language on their own following the
guidance of the instructor. Students are expected to familiarize themselves with the grammar and vocabulary explanations
included in the Unidos online component tutorials, powered by MySpanishLab, before completing the vocabulary, grammar and
culture exercises assigned for a grade. Our online platform, Unidos, powered by MySpanishLab and integrated into Blackboard,
is a first. It offers a unique online environment where students receive guided instruction and practice accompanied by
individualized learning support and assessment. Students encounter continuous formative and summative assessment
opportunities by following a guided lesson plan that begins with an interactive presentation, follows with a set of carefully
crafted tutorials, and culminates in a series of Apply activities that allow for multiple opportunities to practice and master the
concepts with a wealth of individualized, point-of-need support.

Further questions about any aspect of the coursework will be discussed on an individual basis as needed. Therefore students
should not hesitate to contact their instructor with any questions they might have. Learning a language on an online setting
requires as much work (or more!) as learning in the class, along with a great amount of discipline. Students should expect to have
to work on this class for 2-3 hours every single day of the week, including weekends.

IMPORTANT: Successful learning of a language requires being exposed to large amounts of written and oral input and making
the effort to communicate in that language. Therefore, students should try to use the Spanish language as much as possible,
even beyond class assignments. Students should not expect to comprehend every word they read or hear; instead they should
aim at understanding the overall meaning. After a few weeks of continued practice, the language will start to become more and
more comprehensible.

PREREQUISITE: None.
PLACEMENT: If you have studied Spanish in high school (2+ years), you must take the placement test regardless of how long ago
this took place. The only exception is for students enrolling in SPAN 115 AND who have not learned the language outside of the
classroom. Students who place into 250 or 300-level in the language receive a waiver of the foreign language requirement. Those
who place out of 250 (and into the 300-level) are awarded 3 credits for 250.
The test is free, does not require advance registration, and is administered in the Modern and Classical Languages Lab in Aquia
Building 336, Fairfax campus. You should take it prior to the first day of classes in a new semester. For more information, access:

You must make sure that your computer meets all of the requirements detailed below before using MyLab.
Hardware:
Students will need access to a Windows or Macintosh computer with at least 2 GB of RAM and to a fast and reliable
broadband internet connection (e.g., cable, DSL). A larger screen is recommended for better visibility of course material.
Students will need speakers or headphones to hear recorded content and a headset with a microphone is recommended
for the best experience. A webcam will also be needed. For the amount of Hard Disk Space required to take a distance
education course consider and allow for:

ASSIGMENTS

1. MySpanishLab Online Exercises (25%)
Students are responsible for completing the assigned homework on the due dates via MySpanishLab. This online platform has to
be accessed through the Blackboard course page (http://mymasonportal.gmu.edu/). These contextualized activities will help
students learn grammar and vocabulary, develop listening, reading, speaking and writing skills, and connect to culture. Some of
the activities (Readiness Check & Comprueba lo que sabes activities) are for preparation and they are not graded (only checked
for completion). Other activities, such as the Apply, Pronunciacin, While Viewing, After Viewing and the Entrevistas video
activities are graded and for most of them only two attempts are allowed. The highest grade of the two will be computed. Late
assignments (i.e., after the Friday of the week they are due) will not be accepted, and missed assignments will result in a zero
on the gradebook. In order to complete the MySpanishLab assignments, students need to follow the handout registration
instructions posted in Blackboard (MySpanishLab Registration Instructions).

2. Exams (30%)
There will be three online exams (Exam 1 for Chapters 0 and 1; Exam 2 for Chapter 2; and Exam 3 covering Chapter 3). All exams
will test three learning skills (listening, reading and writing) and will cover vocabulary, grammar, culture, and short-essay
questions related to topics covered in the assigned chapter(s). Exams 1 and 2 will be done on Blackboard within 1 hour between
Saturday and Monday. The use of Respondus LockDown Browser, which must be downloaded and installed on your computer,
and a webcam are required for these three exams. Instructions on how to download and use Respondus LockDown Browser can
be found on the course schedule and in Blackboard. Prior to taking the first exam, students are recommended to take the
sample quiz using Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor (a webcam).
A study guide and review activities will be provided for students prior to each exam. There will be no make-ups for missed
exams. Exam 3 will be also done on Blackboard, on June 27
th
. You will have two hours to complete this last online exam.

3. Compositions (15%).
Three graded written assignments will be collected via the Blackboard assignment tool. Each composition will be written in two
stages: first draft (70%) and the final version (30%). These assignments will help students write more accurately and with fewer
errors, and give them a sense of self-confidence with their writing skills. Students are allowed to use dictionaries, but they
cannot look up for other information on the internet, use translation programs, copy from books/notes as they write their
compositions, nor turn in work used for previous classes. The program SafeAssign (plagiarism prevention tool) will be used for
submitted compositions. The compositions topics and due dates are specified on the course schedule. More details about these
compositions as well as the rubric are posted in Blackboard. Late assignments will not be accepted, and missed assignments
will result in a zero on the gradebook.

4. Reflection Essays on my Learning Blog (5%).
For every chapter, students will write in Spanish the answers to a selection of questions (75 words not to exceed 100) reflecting
on the content of the chapters, what they have learned, the errors they made in the online activities, oral projects, compositions,
and exams when applicable. Students will explain why they made the errors and how they corrected them. Other reflections
about the learning process are welcome. The purpose of this task is for students to reflect on their progress and to deepen the
communication with the instructor. Details, including due dates, about this assignment can be found on the course schedule and
in Blackboard. Late assignments will not be accepted, and missed assignments will result in a zero on the gradebook.

5. Kaltura Projects (20%). (webcam required).
The purpose of this activity is to get to know each other better, and to practice oral communication skills in Spanish. The projects
have two parts:
Part A (50%): By Thursdays, students will be assigned a topic or a series of questions (see calendar &
Blackboard) to answer using Kaltura on a Blackboard Discussion. Video-taped Presentations should be around
1-3 minutes long. Please initiate a thread with your name to write your post with the Kaltura video.
Part B (50%): By Saturday, students should choose one classmate and watch his or her videocomments for that
week. Using the Reply option on the discussion board, students will summarize in a Video what his or her
classmate said, and will ask him or her a question.

It is very important for the students to record their name and last name clearly, and avoid reading from a script. Participants
should speak spontaneously as this is not a reading test, and points will be deducted if there is reading on the students part.
Students should use as much of the learned vocabulary and grammar as possible. A grading rubric will be provided beforehand
so students know what to expect. See course schedule for topics and due dates (More information to be found in Blackboard).
Late assignments will not be accepted, and missed assignments will result in a zero on the gradebook. For technical

6. Interviews with the Professor (5%).
Twice in the summer session, the instructor will be interviewing students individually via Blackboard Collaborate, Skype, or on
campus (Aquia 329). The purpose of these interviews is to assess the students communicative skills in Spanish and discuss any
issues of concern. Each interview will last approximately 10 minutes. See course schedule for dates and Blackboard's
