Desktop: A personal computer small enough to fit
in an individual workspace.


Laptop: Computer that is portable and suitable for
use while travelling.


Tablet: A handheld touchscreen capable computer
device.

Netbook: Small laptop computer designed
primarily for accessing internet-based
applications.

Operating Systems-
Master control program in computer: the essential program in a computer that maintains disk
files, runs applications, and handles devices such as the mouse and printer.
Windows XP -The version of the Microsoft Windows
operating system that, when it was released on 2001-10-
25, finally merged the Windows 95 - Windows ME strain
with the Windows NT - Windows 2000 one. XP comes in
two main versions: Windows XP Professional Edition and
a simplified subset for home users, Windows XP Home
Edition.

Windows 7- Like Windows 7, Windows 8 is all about
creating and getting things done with Office and the
familiar Windows desktop. But it's even better. Battery
life and performance have been boosted. All the things
you do most often are easier and more streamlined, from
searching to managing your files.

Windows 8- Windows 8 is a personal computer operating
system developed by Microsoft as part of Windows NT
family of operating systems.

OS X- Version 10 of the Macintosh Operating System,
based on FreeBSD unlike previous versions.

OS X Mountain Lion- OS X Mountain Lion (version 10.8) is
the ninth major release of OS X (formerly Mac OS X),
Apple Inc.'s desktop and server operating system for
Macintosh computers.

OS X Mavericks- OS X Mavericks (version 10.9) is the
tenth major release of OS X, Apple Inc.'s desktop and
server operating system for Macintosh computers.
Windows Server 2012- Windows Server 2012,
codenamed "Windows Server 8", is the sixth release of
Windows Server.

Motherboard- Main circuit board of computer: a circuit
board in a minicomputer or microcomputer through which
all signals are directed.

CPU- Central processing unit.


RAM- Random-access memory is a form of computer data
storage.

Hard Drive- Information storage unit in computer: a rigid
disk inside a computer that holds a large quantity of data
and programs.

Solid-State Drive- An SSD (solid-state drive or solid-state
disk) is a storage device that stores persistent data on
solid-state flash memory.

Magnetic Drive- Also called disk, hard disk. A rigid disk
coated with magnetic material, on which data and
programs can be stored.

Expansion Slot- Receptacle for expansion card: a
receptacle for an expansion card that interfaces with a
computer's internal circuitry.

Network Drive-A disk drive that shares files and
applications with users in the network.

Audio Card- Circuit board for computer sound: a computer
circuit board that allows a personal computer to receive
sound in digital form and reproduce it through speakers.
Graphics Card- Circuit board enabling screen display: a
circuit board that enables a computer to display screen
information.

Firewire-
A technology that allows high-speed communication and data exchange between a
computer and a peripheral or between two computers.

Thunderbolt-
Thunderbolt is a hardware interface that allows for the connection of external
peripherals to a computer.

Drivers-
A driver is software that allows your computer to communicate with hardware or
devices. Without drivers, the hardware you connect to your computer

Dongle-
A device that is connected to a computer to allow access to wireless broadband or use
of protected software.

Peripheral-
A computer peripheral is any external device that provides input and output for the
computer.

USB 2.0-
Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0 is an external interface used on computers and
other digital devices to transfer data through a cable.
