Important news: vacations are good for you. Taking time off can not only make you
more productive, but vacation deprivation may actually increase mistakes and
resentment at co-workers, says Businessweek. But you already knew that, right? Yet
many of us dont take advantage of our leave days. According to one survey, most
employees take less than half their allocated leave, and nearly all feel stressed and
nervous asking their boss for time off. So, in honour of our action-packed Summer
issue (swimsuits! Vacation must-haves! Etc!), Im going to tell you exactly how to get
your boss to agree to your holiday (Cosmo team, dont use this against me)...
1) SET THE STAGE: To a manager, there is nothing more annoying than an
employee calling in sick/taking a break, and then asking for more time off just weeks
later. To greatly improve your odds, spend the months prior to vacation-time working
hard and taking as few days off as possible.
2) KNOW WHEN TO ASK: The following are all bad times to ask for leave: when
your boss is in the middle of a review; when shes been in a bad
mood all day; when shes working on a deadline. Instead,
request for leave on days when your manager has fewer things
to do (like a Thursday or Friday...experts say theyre gold
because theyre closer to the weekend, and your boss will have
most of the week stress behind her).
3) PICK YOUR DATES: At Cosmo, September is a
bad month to take off (its when were closing our
giant anniversary issue). But May or June are
better. Plan your holiday around your workload.
Another tip: ask in advance. If you ask in Jan for
leave in March, its tough to say no.
4) ASK RIGHT: Theres a huge difference
between telling your boss, I wont be able to come
in on Thursday and Friday or asking her, Would it be
possible for me to take Thursday and Friday off? The latter
is the way to do things.
5) TACKLE HER FEARS: Whenever I receive a request
for leave, my rst thought is But how will the work get done?
But when a team member offers solutions along with her leave
request (especially during busy times), I have no reason to refuse.
If your boss is worried about your projects, offer to do them before
you take off or say youre happy to put in extra hours/weekends
once you return to ensure work doesnt suffer.

Happy holidays,

A NEW SIDE
"I've got to admit that your interview with
Kim showed me a never-seen-before side
of her. It taught me that happy girls are
inherently gorgeous, that it's natural to
make mistakes and unacceptable to be
self-critical, and there's no right time or
place to fall in love. Oh, and that it's okay
to kiss a few frogs before you find your
prince charming." Mehak Sodhi
MY INSPIRATION!
"I live in a small district in Assam and own
10 issues of Cosmo, which I get to buy
only when we visit Guwahati. Fashion and
literature are the only two things I live for.
When I read Cosmo, it makes me want to
wear pretty clothes and high heels, work
for what I love and become independent.
It has everything I lovefashion, great
articles and celebs!"
Zoukim Tungnung
DIY BEAUTY STUFF
"Thanks to Cosmo, I now have a range of
home-made cosmetics that I don't worry
about applying because I made them!
The DIY Beauty Products? Oh Yes, You
Can! feature was totally amazing and so
innovative! It was interesting to see
bloggers make cute lip stains and neon
nail paints. It was my favourite story in
the April issue." Reema Agarwal
TRENDS MADE EASY!
"Your story 5 Days, 5 Tricky Trends was
divine! You see all these great styles on
the runway, but it's never easy to
implement them in your everyday
wardrobe without getting the 'stares'. But
your story made it look so effortless to
implement S/S'13 looks every day! I
especially loved the idea of pairing
leather and shine for day." Rucha Naik
TIME TO STAY FIT!
"Thanks a tonne for the Could You Tweet
What You Eat? article. The story was so
relatable as I'm exactly that person who
skips meals and eats a lot of junk food.
Your article has inspired me to
challenged myself and maintain a picture
diary for a week, for a healthier change."

She has built a global
business empire and
amassed 17 million
Twitter followers,
shares top billing
in a new movie, and is
expecting a baby thats
getting almost as much
buzz as Kate Middletons.
But Kim Kardashian says
her biggest new project
isnt any of these:
its growing up.
By Amy Wallace; Photographs
by Matthias Vriens-McGrath
tiny bottles, each with a secret code name, sit on a shiny white table in
front of Kim Kardashian, awaiting inspection. Inside the vials are
versions of her latest fragrance, Glam, which is being tweaked to
appeal to Japanese consumers. Whatever the 32-year-old beauty
chooses today will be sold overseas under her name, so she is taking
this smell-off seriously.
Its a lazy Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles, but Kardashian is hard at
work. Pregnant but not showing, shes dressed in a filmy, grey-pink
Lanvin top, a form-fitting skirt, and pointy-toed Balmain heels. The
Glam for Japan meeting is the first of three today; next up is a look at
marketing materials for an upcoming fragrance (her sixth) and a
strategy session with the heads of her online shoe company,
ShoeDazzle.
This is probably not how you expec ted Kardashians weekend to
unfold. She is, after all, a girl who is famous for having funsometimes
too much of it. On Keeping Up With The Kardashians, shes forever
trying to drag her sisters, Kourtney and Khlo, out clubbing. While her
2006 sex tape with singer Ray J feels like ancient history, her 72-day
marriage to basketball player Kris Humphries and her subsequent
romance with singer Kanye West keep her constantly in the tabloids.
Its hard not to assume thats by design.
Nonetheless, she tells me: 2013 for me is about scaling back. I want
to focus on the few projects that Im passionate about and not spread
myself too thin. To which I can only ask myself the same question that
has nagged me since I first shook her hand: is this girl for real?
Full disclosure: this is not the first time Ive met Kim Kardashian.
Our first encounter occurred five years ago on L.A.s 101 Freeway
when, inching along in bumper-to-bumper traffic, I rear-ended the
woman famed for her bodacious backside. It was my fault completely.
She couldve been pissy or freaked out as we exchanged insurance
information. Instead, she was sweet. No big deal.
In situations like that, emergencies, Im super-calm, she says,
laughing when I reveal that I am the distracted driver who hit her in
2008. Especially with material things, I feel like its not the end of the
world as long as everyones safe. Im like that in any stressful situation.
Even when my father passed away, I sat down and I said to everyone,
Okay, guys, what are we supposed to learn from this? We all need to
grow up.
Kim was 22 when Rob ert Kardashian, a lawyer best known for
serving on O.J. Simpsons defense team, died of cancer. She was going
through her first divorce, splitting from a man shed mar ried at 19, and
she admits she relied on her dad for counsel and support. On his
deathbed, though, he told her he knew shed be okay. Ill never have
to worry about you, she recalls him saying. Youll always make it
happen. Take care of your brother and sisters. She promised she

Food satises me. When Im having a bad day, I look forward to a good meal to calm me down...I even nd cooking and eating therapeutic. Luckily, I am blessed with good genes, which means no matter how much I indulge, it doesnt show (yay!). So when Cosmo asked me to maintain a food diary on Twitter for a week, I said yes, excited about the challenge!
Being a freelancer means I get to stay home all day. It also means that I have more access to food. I woke up late and wandered into the kitchen looking for breakfast. Muesli and juice was easily available, so
I made myself a bowl. While working, I felt like munching on something salty, so I grabbed a packet of salted almonds and ate a handful around noon (wrong move!). Lunch consisted of eggs, bacon and a whole lot of butter. It was quite lling, which meant no evening snacks! But I was starving by dinner, so my boyfriend
DAY 1
When Im having a bad day, I look forward to a good meal to calm me down.
I woke up early today as I had some work to nish before lunch. So breakfast was a quick glass of chocolate milk and a banana. Yesterdays salty meals had left me thirsty, so I kept
chugging cold water all day. Lunch was a quick egg fried rice made with leftover rice and lots of veggies. Thinking that Im maintaining a picture food diary, I snacked on some puffed rice and cranberry juice (which has recently become a favourite!) in the evening, instead of my usual pack of biscuits. I decided to hit the gym for some time, and craved something healthy post my workout. Thus, the day ended with a salad and some (more!) cranberry juice.
DAY 2
Being a
freelancer means I have more
access to food!
and I went out and I gobbled down a roast beef sandwich.

5 DAYS,
5 TRICKY
TRENDS!
TRICKY TREND #1
WEARING SHEER FABRICS
Peek-a-boo fabrics remain a runway staple,
season after season. The key to carrying
this gutsy trend is to work it in small
doses. Opt for one sheer piece at a time,
and balance it with a solid fabric to avoid
looking over the top. Think a sheer maxi
skirt with a monochrome peplum top, or
a semi-sheer shirt paired with a boyfriend
blazer. Wearing a sheer jacket over a shift
dress will easily take your look from work
to after-party!
I really liked this
look; it was a refreshing
change from the safe
styles I opt for. I wore
this for lunch with
friends, and collected
many compliments!

WHINING AND
DINING
I was in line for the washroom at a
bar, and this smelly guy next to me
started ranting about how he hates

to my table, I saw an old college

and then she asked me where the

and he smells like an ashtray. As I
said that, the man himself emerged,

My track coach at college is so

C!
Archie has been around for
so long. What do you do to
keep your characters and the
comics relevant?
Jon Goldwater: When I joined
the company, I was in tune with
whats happening at the moment.
I brought that sensibility to Archie
without ever violating the integrity
of who these characters are. What
has changed is Riverdalethe world
around them. It is very important to
make Archie, Betty, Veronica and
the gang part of the world.
Why do people still feel a
connection to Archie after all
these decades?
JG: I know it sounds sort of
jingoistic and clich, but weve
been here 70 years and people have
grown up with Archie. Theres a
fondness. Whenever I mention to
people that I work at Archie, the
rst thing they do is smile.
Whos your girl, Betty
or Veronica?
JG: It depends on the day.
Some days I like Betty,
some days I like Veronica.
Some days youre in one mood
and the next youre in another.
What were your thoughts
when M

with this collaboration?
JG: I was honoured. I said to

What do you think is most
exciting about Archie taking
the backseat on this one?
JG: The coolness factor of being

The 70s middle manner is having a major moment.
Move over, side parts...the It
crowd is embracing sleek, clean,
shiny centre parts (a style that
works so well on girls with heart-
shaped faces). Worried that a dead-
centre parting is too severe? Opt
for a slightly off-centre part for a
softer effect. If you dont have a
natural middle part, just blow-dry
the top sections of your hair to
create a new centre line. To cop
Gwyneths poker-straight, sleek
look, use a flat iron to nix volume,
and finish with a shine spray or
smoothing gloss. PS: if youve got
frizzy or curly hair, remember to
use a straightening conditioner
before you style.

No mascara?! Oh, yes! The bare-lashes look
took centre-stage during NY Fashion Week
before making its way around the world.
Charlotte Willer, Maybelline's lead make-up
artist, told whowhatwear.com, The face
looks more pure this way, less doll-like. You
notice other things. To make up for the lack
of fluttery lashes, use an eye pencil in a dark
(brown or black) or light (pearl or white)
colour to line your eyes as close to the lashes
as possible(this adds definition). For an extra
boost, dab on a skin illuminator and, pick a
lipstick shade that pops!

THE PREP WORK
Glowy legs are essential to nailing
the beach-Goddess look. Get them
by rst exfoliating legs for a smooth
nish (use brisk, circular motions and
spend extra time on your knees and
ankles). Next, mix together baby oil
and bronzer, and rub onto your legs.
Let them dry completely before you
get dressed, to protect clothing.

THE PREP WORK
Theres a reason derms keep reciting Protect the skin
south of your chin: even minimal UV exposure can make
the delicate dcolletage rough and speckled, says LOral
Paris consulting derm Gervaise Gerstner. Swipe your
chest with a glycolic pad every night to fade any damage,
and wear SPF 15 or higher every day.
THE PREP WORKI
Summer is a common time for backne (blame excess
sweat). Nix and prevent a are-up by using a salicylic
acidspiked scrub (we love Neutrogena All-in-1 Acne
Control Daily Scrub, `380 approx) every day, says Dendy
Engelman, a consulting derm for Clearasil. Make it the last
thing you do in the shower (to get rid of all residue), letting
it soak into skin for a minute before rinsing.

THE PREP WORK
These two ab-blasting moves make showing off a sexy
stomach easy: Both target your six-pack and transverse
muscles to shape out a sexy waistline, says Brooke Siler,
owner of re:AB Pilates Studio, in NYC. First, lie on your back
with legs bent into your chest, then extend them to a
45-degree angle and then bend legs back in (keep abs tight
and head lifted). Do 10 sets. Next, lie with legs and arms
outstretched. Sit up until your hands touch your toes, then roll
back down. Repeat 10 times. Do this routine three times a day
the week before the beach.
THE PREP WORKI
No surprise, the biggest butt bummer is
cellulite. It affects 90 percent of women, even
naturally thin ones, says Dr Engelman. The
best non-surgical x: body lotions that, when
used daily, thicken skins collagen levels (like
Nivea Skin Firming Moisturizer with Q10 and
HYDRA IQ, `560 approx). Collagen keeps
skin plumpthe more you have, the less youll
notice fat bulges, says Dr Engelman.

something to do with the fact that shes currently taking a

might be the only time all day a guy isnt
dying for sex. As my friend D, 26, says,
Theres nothing like getting ready for

A GUYS GUT REACTION: Just what a guy wants when he gets home from work:
more work.
WHY ITS NOT THAT SEXY: The Chase is a game for those whove just met.
When youre in a new relationship, youre so excited, youll try anything. I once
spent three weeks eating at vegan restaurants just because a girl was cute (and
vegan!). Of course, Id grab a cheeseburger afterwards. But still, thats working
for it! One of the great perks of a long-term relationship is sure-thing sex. As
my buddy, Jim, 38, puts it, If youve been in the relationship for a while, this tip
amounts to cruel and unusual punishment.

A GUYS GUT REACTION: Its the

WHY ITS NOT THAT SEXY: Maybe
a guy in amazing shape wouldnt
dread this tip. But Im not crazy
about it. It seems distracting, says
Brad, 25. When youre scrutinising
every bit of action unfolding in the

non-sexy angles. Unless youve both

them while he

A GUYS GUT REACTION: Is it cool if
I watch television till you nish?
WHY ITS NOT THAT SEXY: This
sounds more goofy than sexy. Sure,
most guys enjoy a striptease, but theres
a reason strippers dont wear tops like
that. Guys like it when you take off your
clothes, but its better if it doesnt take
half an inning to get to the main event.
Buy a

super-

number for his
eyes only.
A GUYS GUT REACTION: The only
time a guy notices lingerie is when
its hard to take off.
WHY ITS NOT THAT SEXY: Sexy
lingerie is kind of a non-starter. If it
makes you feel sexy, great. Go for
it. But if youre wearing it to turn a
guy on, just know it doesnt do as
much for us as you might think. The
one hot thing about lingerie is the
mystery of whats underneath. But,
as Will, 40, says, If I already know
whats under there, then whats the
point? I spoke to multiple guys
about lingerie, and all had some
variation of the same response
unless you crawl into bed wearing
stained granny panties, we really
dont care if your undies are silk,
lace, or a cotton-Lycra blend.
5
6
Stick a silk scarf in his bag with a
note that reads, Youre going to
need this later tonight.
A GUYS GUT REACTION: Why, is it gonna be cold out?
WHY ITS NOT THAT SEXY: Unless youre (1) Stevie Nicks or (2) dating Steven
Tyler, silk scarves have no place at sexy time. The same goes for most supposedly
sexy props: red light bulbs, handcuffs, geisha costumes (unless you know a guy is
into those things). Its not the prop that counts; its you, up for fun, thats the real
exciting part. Most of us dont know what to make of silk scarves and all that stuff,
and the last thing we want in bed is to be confused.
7
Read each other torrid
passages from erotic books.
A GUYS GUT REACTION: Theres free porn online, right?
WHY ITS NOT THAT SEXY: These days, the average guy has
spent most of his life immersed in whats become a highly
sexualized culture. From hardcore porn to the lingerie ad in
a magazine, were constantly being hit over the head with
sex. The effect is that its dulled our senses. We dont want
to read a bedtime storywe want to engage in the story
ourselves. But talking dirty to each other? Thats a win.
So heres the thing: guys dont require fancy
moves or costumes to get turned on. Were simple
creatures with simple needs. We like gestures that
show us you care, and we like it when a girl has a
vibrant life outside the relationship. When I met
my wife, I thought it was sexy that she would stay
out till 4am drinking bourbon at a bar. My friend
Afshin, 24, says, One time, a girl woke me up with
a massage, and it was awesome. Chad, 27, says, I
love how my girlfriend keeps my favourite snacks at
her place. Now thats hot. n

REBOUND RULE 1
Know
Your Goal
Unfortunately, theres no little green
light that goes on when youre
emotionally recovered enough to
sleep with someone else. You may
never know when youre ready. Just
make sure you have realistic
expectations. You need to be clear
and honest with yourself about what
youre looking to get out of this, says

in New York. If youre trying to use
rebound sex as a solutionto get

For most women, rebound sex can be
almost as stressful as your actual first

way. This shouldnt be about getting
it over with so you can move on
ideally, it should be a sexy, pleasurable
experience that leaves you feeling

future of your love life, says sex

you come out on top (literally and

have fun, and let him come along for

relationship, it can sometimes be
harder to push through all the
emotions and other non-sexy

rebound sex, you are finally liberated
from the tension that builds up in a
rocky relationship, and you can give
yourself permission to explore.
Maybe you think itd be hot to boss

Whatever your sexual wish, dont be

These are all signs hes in tune with his

Of course, there are plenty of D-bag
players out there who fit that bill. So
screen for someone who is also
sensitive to your needs. Little gestures,
like offering you his seat at the bar,
asking if youre warm enough after
someone opens the door, or picking up

THE ME-
FIRST WIFE
Its all about herthe money,
the time, the house, the traveland she
takes pride in the fact that if she isnt happy,
no-one else can be. Her needs and wants
always come first, because the Me-First
believes her husband is extremely lucky
to have her. Ergo, the husband needs to
do everything in his power to keep her
happy. How does this work? Me-Firsts are
very selective about the men they pick,
and work extra hard to maintain the Im
totally worth it sensibility. Take a look at
French president Nicolas Sarkozys former
supermodel wife, Carla Bruni, and youll
realise hes going through all kinds of hell
to keep up with her, including the exercise
routine, diet plan and cultural improvement
programme, hence keeping him too busy to
stray. And heres the clincher: hes convinced
all the effort hes making is simply a trade-
off for being married to someone like her.
Everyones got a particular
wife style; find out which
fits you by checking out
these celebrity examples.

WOULD YOU BE?
WHAT
KIND
OF
146 COSMOPOLITAN may 2013
love & lust
THE
MAN-FIRST
WIFE
Shes not a complete yes woman,
but a variation of the surrendered
wife philosophy. While the former
will give up all control to her
partner, the MFW plays it smart
by giving up only a small portion
so she can maintain a stronger grip
on the relationship. The best part?
The man will never really know it,
or even guess what shes trying to
do. As most of us know, men dont
like being manipulated this way
so it makes sense for an MFW to
never let her strategy known to her
husband...shes as subtle as it gets.
If youre looking to follow in the
footsteps of Catherine, Duchess of
Cambridge (the ultimate MWF),
take a leaf out of her book and do
the following: find out what his
favourite sport is, learn to cook his
guilty pleasure meal, and attend
game night at the local bar.
THE TEAM-
LEADER
WIFE
Think of the super-mom stereotype
and youve got a hit. She tends to do
it all, from taking care of the kids, to
looking after the house, and holding
her own at a full-time job. Multi-
tasker Victoria Beckham is a great
fit for this wife style. Such highly
efficient and independent ladies will
manage their marriages, just like
everything else in their lives, with
a formula comprising of to-do lists,
tonnes of self-discipline, and a bit of
ambition thrown in. Shes the reliable
one in the relationship and will
command the complete respect and
awe of her husband. Youll never catch
a TLW bogged down by her emotions
or falling prey to mood swings. Just
like you wont find her getting on the
divorce brigade anytime soon. Shes
bright and always has a Plan B (and
Plan C, just in case).
THE
DOMESTIC-
PRO WIFE
The DPW gets so wrapped up with
her home duties, she tends to forget
about her husband and his needs,
which can lead to deep-seated issues
in the relationship. You cant confuse
the DPW with a domestic goddess,
who is associated with a sex symbol
to make men drool. While this wife is
focused on her children and running
a twinkly home (no pun intended),
she runs out of fuel when it comes to
lavishing attention on her husband.
In a regular situation, the house is
run according to what works best for
the kids, and the man of the house
simply has to fall into place and carry
out his role as doting dadchanging
nappies and attending school
functions when required. Though
typically, the DPW (like Twinkle
Khanna) will marry a man who isnt
around 24/7, so she can run things
without any challenges, mostly.
THE ALL-
IN WIFE
Sussane Roshan
takes the number-one slot in this
category. You can expect the All-In
Wife to have detailed schedules and
reminders of monthly anniversaries
and endless weekend getaway
plans. She wont shy away from
couples therapy and talking about
her feelings and the future of the
relationship...this is one committed
woman! Back to Sussane as the
leader of the AIWs pack. Shes the
ideal doe-eyed, hubby-lovin lady,
but this can become a hindrance
sometimes. Usually the husbands
of these wives assume the
excitement and intensity will die
down after the honeymoon...
it doesnt. And if it ever does, its
usually focused on planning the
future and what their grandkids
will look like (maybe shes got a
scrapbook stashed somewhere, too).
THE
LIFESTYLE
WIFE
Shes the flashiest of the lot. These
ladies have put in a lot of time and
energy perfecting the art of getting
their men. And the LW is not about
to give it all up just because she
finds out her husband cheated.
Betrayals are swept under a pile of
designer buys and lavish vacations.
The LW is under no illusionsshe
would rather live with infidelity and
ill behaviour than create a vacancy
for some other LW. Shes the trophy
wife of the business tycoon, sports
star or Hollywood bigwigalways
impeccably turned out, the perfect
PR product. A LW has everything
houses, clothes, and holidays other
women can only dream of, and she
always knew it would come at a
price (think Coleen Rooney, wife
of UK football star Wayne Rooney,
who tolerated reported infidelities
in return for a pampered life).
THE BEST-
MATE WIFE
If you were to ask men
to describe the ideal mate, chances
are theyd describe someone worthy
of best dude friend status, but
with lady parts. Thats the winning
combinationthe BMW because
she actually thinks like a man
and plays like a man, and in the
relationship, neither partner thinks of
the other as a species from a different
planet. The BMW and the All-In
Wife are complete opposites of each
other. Shes about as domesticated
as her hubby; just as ambitious; and
definitely as much of a party animal
(cue Kate Moss). Best-Mate couples
generally do not analyse and criticise
each otherthey like to live one day
at a time, never bothering too much
about the future. If she takes the
same amount of time to get dressed
as her husband, and can drink the
same amount, shes a BM wife. n
ADVERTORIAL
When you think about it, as women, we spend
a considerable amount of time trying to fgure
out the best way to stay in shape. Whether its
trying out different diets, and exercise routines,
or fnding the perfect outft that helps us look
a dress size or two smaller. Feeling good and
looking good go hand in hand. And looking
good isnt just about being slim, its about being
healthy and feeling ft!

WHAT WEVE TRIED TO STAY IN
SHAPE
Everything! From restricting ourselves to boiled
veggies and tofu, to skipping meals, or eating
minimal portions. Does it work? Sometimes.
But mostly, we get tired of this boring lifestyle,
and it gets harder and harder to stay on track.
Were constantly looking for tastier alternatives.
WHY IT DOESNT WORK
Diets end up being unhealthy, expensive and
repetitive. They dont do you much good as

Find Your Voice
Emilys fast-talking character was
written as an American, but Emily

she should use her natural British

for her to think about when

is so much jargon and dialogue in the

Mortimer. Career consultant Andrea

Mortimer looks to her own boss,

Find a technique that gets you

JULIA LOUIS-

plays ambitious yet impulsive vice
president Selina Meyer on HBOs
political comedy, Veep
Be Consistent
To get into character, Julia Louis-
Dreyfus thinks about every aspect of
Selinas life: who is Selina when she
gets home from the West Wing?
How does she respond? We all need
to do the same image-maintaining at
work. Does how you want to
appear at the office match up
with how you present
yourself online? asks Kay. If
you, you, you
you appear to be a totally
different person in the office
than you do on Twitter, that
could be
a problem.
Hold Your Own
My character is keenly aware
that there are more men than
women on Capitol Hill, but its
not something at the forefront
of her brain, says Louis-
Dreyfus. She is thinking of
power, and she goes with her
gut. If you find yourself
working in a male-dominated
industry, Kays advice is to
think more about what makes
you unique and valuable.
What specific skills do you
have to offer? You want to
conduct yourself as you, and react to
people, ideas, and situations using
your best professional judgment in
your voice.
Find the Fun
My physics teacher said something
that has stayed with me: Have fun at
all costs, says Julia. If you apply that
to the work you do, youll be happy.
Kay suggests taking notice of when
youre happiest at workwhen are
you engaged and inspired?
Acknowledging your interests and
talents will make work more fun. n
Dress for Success
The wardrobe on the show leads me
to a very different physicality that is
definitely not Kristen, says Bell. On
my own time, Im usually sitting at
home, eating bananas and peanut
butter in front of my computer,
wearing Nike Dunks. Thats not
appropriate for Jeannie in the work
place. She wears Brian Atwood
platforms. Bells advice? Present
yourself the way you want to be
perceived. Clothes can alter how you
feel about yourself. My clothes are
huge in influencing my posture, walk,
and how I sit at a desk, says Bell,
whose character wears tailored
skirts, slim pants, and structured
suit jackets. Your clothes should fit
you and your work culture.
Embrace Your
Feminine Side
I am one of the only females on
the set, but my character is just
as intellectual, says Bell. But in
my opinion, the most successful
women are those who view their
feminine characteristics as assets
rather than as weaknesses. Keep
in mind that theres a difference
between embracing your
womens intuition and being
over-emotional at work, says Kay.
Dont vent and gossip about
co-workersthats just bad
work karma.

allergic to the gym. But lazy girls need
toning, too, and I was happy to try
anything as long as it didnt involve
treadmills and raw vegetables. Hence,
the Cosmo weight-loss challenge. The
idea was to spend 10 days doing small,
easy, cal-burning stuff like trying on
clothes (yay!) and playing games at the
pub (yay, yay!), which dont involve
major lifestyle changes, but promise
results. Using caloriecount.com, I was
able to estimate the number of calories
I was cutting with each activity, and
heres how I fared...

4. HIT A
GAMING PUB
I planned a game night with a group of
friends at a local pub that has a
bowling alley, plus other games.
According to fitday.com, you can burn
upto 150 calories per hour while
bowling. Later, we played a couple of
games of darts, and that helped cut
another 70 calories. Plus, it worked
out my arm muscles, which rarely get
any exercise.
5. TAKE THE
STAIRS
My office is on the third floor and that
means using the elevator every time. I
changed things up by taking the stairs
once a day during my lunch break.
That 10 minute walk (going up and
down) aided in burning almost 300
calories! Encouraged, I tried doing it
twice a day, and the habit stuck! Total
calories spent: 600!
6. SING WITH
THE STARS
Im a closet singer, and I love musicals.
Luckily, caloriesperhour.com says
singing for 20 minutes while standing
burns 45 calories. So, I honed my
(hopefully undiscovered) singing skills
during several Glee re-runs over the
weekend. And, when they werent
singing, I switched to Comedy Central
for a good laugh that torched another

grocery shopping and, nearly 45
minutes browsing the aisles and
pushing the cart. According to
caloriecount.com, I burned 160
calories, and I wasnt even tired! I got
home and re-arranged furniture in
the living-room for 20 minutes and,
burned another 137 calories.
2. TRY ON 50
OUTFITS
Id read a lot of articles that claimed
trying on different outfits actually
burn upto 11 calories per change. I
had to try this, of course! So each
morning, for five days, I tried on
nearly 10 different outfits before
settling on a winner. Total calories
annihilated: 500!

3. ADD A
LITTLE CHILI
I love spicy food, so this little trick
seemed right up my alley. I treated
myself to extra chili for one meal
every day. Adding a few hot peppers
(they contain capsaicin) to your meal,
causes the body to start spending
more energy as heat, therefore
increasing your total calorie burn. If

Q.
Ask Cosmo Anything
you, you, you
From random little issues to major life dramas, weve got your back.
My boyfriend
is really
sweet, but
hes not
romantic at all. Weve
been together for two
years and he has yet to
send even a single
flower! How do I tell him
he needs to up the
romance without making
him feel bad?
A: First of all, dont worry about making
him feel badhe can take it. Instead,
worry about getting your message
across. Since its been two years, wait
for a night when youve each had a
couple of drinks (in other words, youve
loosened up but not tripping over
furniture), and tell him you want to make
sure you guys dont take each other for
granted. Ask him if theres anything he
misses about when you first started
dating or if theres anything hed like to
tweak (and take his feedback in stride).
When its your turn, bring up romance.
That way, youre not berating him for
never being romanticyoure letting him
know exactly how to make you happy,
which hell appreciate.
Q: Is it better for a girl to fake
an orgasm or tell a guy shes not
going to have one?
A: Its best to do neither. If you fake it,
hell just keep on doing whatever it is that
isnt making you have a real one. (And if
he discovers youve been faking, therell
be all kinds of problems because of his
damaged ego.) However, if you simply
tell him youre not going to have an
orgasm, what he may hear is: Im not
enjoying this at all. You are less than a
man. More ego problems. So if you want
to avoid thator 20 unpleasant minutes
of his trying in vain to make you finish
simply grab him and say some variation
of I want to come. It gets your point
across without hurting anyones feelings,
and it sounds hot.
Q: For six months, Ive been
bullied by two workmates who
used to be my friends. There
was no big falling outthey just
stopped talking to me and
started talking about me behind
my back. I feel so bad, Ive
handed in my notice. Im hurt
and its ruined my self-esteem.
A: Anger is the other side of hurt. And
its allowed. Were angry on your behalf;
let yourself be angry instead of hurt.
These two saw your low self-esteem and
shyness, and used it against you. Why?
We bet its because youre good at your
job, your boss knows it and they envy
you. Bullies dont go for the weak; they
go for the vulnerable parts of someone
whose strengths they envy. Dont let
these two yapping women get away with
it. Speak to your manager, who can
involve your HR department if necessary.
Or at least make sure your boss knows
precisely why you gave in your notice.
Q: Ive seen a couple of celebs
work the monochromatic trend
and while they look fabulous, Im
worried Ill just end up looking
like a big block of colour. How
do I make it work?
A: For the uninitiated, monochromatic
dressing is basically wearing one colour
(or shades of the same colour) from
head to toe. Its all the rage right now
with Supers Heidi Klum and Candice
Swanepoel and celebs like Penelope
Cruz and Jessica Biel. The benefits? Its
an easy look to style (just pick your fave
colour!); it lengthens your body (because
there arent any obvious visual breaks in
the outfit); and it helps streamline your
figure, making it super-flattering. If youre
worried about looking too same, go with

4 TO 7 POINTS
You Win by
Playing Fair
Youre firmly in the game and you like
playing it, but your ideal scenario is when
everybody gets aheadno dirty tricks for
you. Competition motivates you, but
youre not likely to burn bridges anytime
soon. That positive attitude and enough-to-
go-around spirit (two traits of the most-
liked leaders) make you popular and
trusted. Moderate levels of competition
are healthy, says Kilduff. Talk about a
winning approach!
8 TO 10 POINTS
You Deserve
Your Own Show:
Extreme Rival
It feels good to be number-one, but your
win-at-all-costs attitude might leave you
lonely at the top. A must-win mind-set
makes you more willing to cheat, lie, and
engage in unethical behaviour to get a leg
up, says Gavin Kilduff, Ph.D., a professor
of management at NYUs Stern School of
Business. And that can alienate friends and
co-workers. Constantly comparing yourself
to others is exhaustingtry striving to beat
your own goals, not anyone elses.
4. Your friend threw her boyfriend an epic b-day bash. Its your turn. You:
Plan a way better bash! Your BF isnt the biggest
karaoke fan, but man, its a crowd pleaser.
a
Pick a party theme that
represents him.
Ask your BF if hed be
cool with just a dinner
for two.
c b
5. You see news of your friends promotion online. You:
a
Like her status update,
post a Congrats! and
promise yourself youll
work on your own
career goals.
b
Furiously start posting
about your own work
achievements.
c

Time to Start Playing
You feel awkward tooting your own horn
because you dont want to be perceived as
trying to outdo others. You need to raise
the stakes or your life will pass you by.
Nobody hands you success on a platter
you have to reach for it yourself. And a little
bit of competitive spirit will make you reach
higher. Let your friends promotion motivate
you to get your own, or strive to beat your
own best running time. Aiming to succeed
will keep you on your toes.
Have appointed yourself team captain. And yes,
there is a training schedule!
a
Sign up to participate,
and organise a post-
game happy hour.
c
Plan to cheer from
the sidelines.

3. The office quiz game is a month away. You:
2. A co-worker presented a killer project that wowed your boss. You:
Make it your mission to
outdo her with your own
PowerPoint
extravaganza, complete
with original score.
Congratulate her. Its
not about you.
c a
Ask your colleague to
tell you about her
project and offer to
help her next time.
b
Bill! What bill?
You said you

REASON 3
The Chemistrys Fading
Even if your instinct is to over
com pen sate with hot lingerie, trying to
solve things with sex is not a great plan.
WHAT TO DO
Be honest. When youre in a
comfortable moment, tell him that
while youre still into him, you feel
the shift and dont want a half-

A new way men are showing that they may be interested in you: liking your Instagram

Reasons Why Guys Pull Away
Its known as the slow fadebut it doesnt necessarily mean
your relation ship is dunzo. Heres why guys pull away when
things start heating upand what to do if yours does.
3
Think youre
losing him?
Read this first
REASON 1
Hes Just Not Ready for
Commitment
When a man is ready to settle, he
probably is financially stable, over his
player years, and has friends in serious
relationships. Not the case? Then hes
likely not ready for commitment yet.
WHAT TO DO
Let him go, and hold out for the guy
wholl be better for you in the long run.
REASON 2
Its Too Much, Too Fast
If you two whirlwinded your
relationship, he may have realised that
he just doesnt know you that well and is
backing away because of it.
WHAT TO DO
Wait for him to contact you...youre
giving him space to miss you. If hes into
you, hell call. In the future, spend time
with friends too, not just with each other.

according to our guy poll: the one-word Sorry brush-off.
Experts say this fauxpology is meant to avoid confrontation

make it clear that youll have an easier time getting over his

Sahil Shroff: I nd this very attractive. But
I imagine its only meant for girls with short or
medium-length hair.
Kayozi Irani: Fresh, effortless and very sexy...
works for me!
Ali Fazal: This is just the hairstyle I like. Its
stylish and gives off a cool vibe.
Messy Hair
Sahil Shroff: Its a great look for college
students, if youre following a theme. Not when
Im taking you out on a date. Please!
Kayozi Irani: This is a futuristic trend. But Im
not sure if I like it.
Ali Fazal: Its like a three-year-old had her day
with crayons on her eyelids! I dont get the forced
addition of a coloured wrinkle!
Floating
Liner
Sahil Shroff: Im a big fan of natural
looking make-up. Women look hot with minimal
make-up.
Kayozi Irani: It looks less natural and more
caked up. Although I like the lip colour.
Ali Fazal: As long as I cant see layers of make-
up on the face, Im good. But she appears to be
trying too hard.
Natural
Make-up
Sahil Shroff: Love the look! Easy to wear and
can look edgy if done right.
Kayozi Irani: Id denitely take a second look at
this girl, wondering if she just came out of
The Matrix.
Ali Fazal: Accessories on centre-parted hairit
might look great on the runway, but is too sci- for
real life. Im not impressed.

Sahil Shroff: Please dont wear this to work.
Fashion showyes; real lifeno way!
Kayozi Irani: Id be horried if my date turned
up like this. Seems like shes trying too hard to
get attention.
Ali Fazal: It is attention-grabbing, Im not sure
for the right reasons, though!
Sahil Shroff: Super hot! I love when a girl does
smokey eyes. It looks amazing.
Kayozi Irani: Her eyes do all the talking. I cant
stop staring at her.
Ali Fazal: There is something very intense about
this look. Its very beautiful and mysterious. Id love
if my date turns up like this.

Sahil Shroff: I nd it so appealing when a girl
has slicked back hair. Its so international and sexy!
Kayozi Irani: The at-combed hair is repelling.
A big no for me!
Ali Fazal: I don't think this works. If you have
hair, you might as well use it, instead of having it
stuck to your scalp.

Sahil Shroff: She looks nice, but only because
shes not wearing any other make-up with it.
Kayozi Irani: Her lips look stained. She looks
ghostly to me!
Ali Fazal: Are we in 2080 already? This
look is too much. It might work for a whacky
commercial, but please dont try this at home!

Shadow
Instead of cluttering your make-up bag
with a zillion types, stock up on eye
palettes or shadows that come with super-
powers (long-lasting shadows, anyone?).
Choose a palette with shades and textures
that work together. Use lighter,
shimmery shades to accent the
brow bones or the corners of
your eyes.

What happens when three girls swap
their long hair for a cropped cut?
Cosmo (armed with wigs), finds out.
By Vasudha Rai
Anica Mann
25, Ph.D Student
When I first put on this graphic bob wig, I was a little
apprehensive. But once I got used to how it looked on me,
I felt really confident. Even my styling changed...I wore
shorter, more structured clothes and heels. My male best
friend thought my new hair looked very sexy, and my father
said it took years off my face. Im teaching 11
th
graders as
part of a summer project, and while the boys thought it was
a bit odd, all the girls loved it. Eventually, when I told them
it was a wig, all the girls asked to try it. So would I consider
getting a permanent cut? One word: definitely.

Would

Dare
To Go
Short?
210 COSMOPOLITAN may 2013
Suhani Mahajan Bhel

Ive always loved the idea of short hair and this messy
underpinned bob was perfect. It worked well with my naturally
wavy hair, and made me feel flirtyI wore
my red Vivienne
Westwood heels to go
with it. My brother
was the first to see my
new look and said that
it was very Marilyn
Monroe. Later, I met
my family for dinner
and they all agreed it
looked very 50s-chic.
Surprisingly, my best
friend asked if I had
lost weight! Sadly, my
partner hated the look,
and wanted my long
hair back!
Sushrii Mishra
22, student and model
All through my childhood, I was tortured with an army-
style, short cut, which made me grow and stick with long
hair since my teens. But this pixie wig changed how I felt
about short hair. In fact, I did a double-duty
experimentI not only went short, but also tried a
lighter hair colour. Both made me feel chic and gamine,
just like Audrey Hepburn. I also noticed that more people
checked me out as I walked down the street, and my
boyfriend fell in love with my new lookhe thought I
looked cute and sophisticated. At a sari campaign shoot
the next day, the make-up artist loved my new
hair so much,
she wanted to
use it in the
campaign.
That didnt
work out
eventually, but
I know now
that short hair
is far from
being
torturous.

Match
Your
Colour
to Your
Skin
Tone
I think Indian women
look best with their hair
slightly lighter. Dark-
haired women should
definitely consider
getting a soft,
cappuccino brown as
it looks very natural.
Secondly, a lot of
Indian women look
great with hair that is a
warmer, chestnut-y
colour, insted of
a blaring red.
Since most Indian
women have very
long hair, it may
get a bit boring
sometimes. If that's the
case, one can add interest by having
a litte colour just at the ends...it looks
modern and chic.

2 Choose
Balayage
Over
Highlights
According to me, a more modern
alternative to hair-colour methods
like highlighting, lowlighting, and
streaking, is getting balayage or
colour at the ends of the hair. A
balayage is a painting. So you paint
different colours on the hair ends.
Its similar to highlighting, but here
you leave the top area darker and
make the ends light. This way, the
colour blends well with your natural
shade and looks less artificial.
3
Use
Colour
to Get
More
Volume
Few people know
that you can trick
the eye into thinking
that youve got more
voluminous and lush
hair using colour.
The idea is to use
a combination of
highlights and
lowlights (as opposed
to doing either one)
to create contrast. So
when light falls on your
hair, the lighter
bits extend
forward and
the darker
ones recess
back,
giving an
illusion of
abundant
hair.
4
Follow
a Hair
Care
Routine
"I recommend following
a three-step routine
shampoo, conditioner,
and maskto maintain
the salon- like colour
of your hair. You have
to use the three in
combination. Using a
mask once a week on
coloured hair will lock
in the colour and inject
moisture, making the
hair colour
more
lustrous
and
keeping
it salon-
fresh for
longer. n

Which eye shadow
is on-trend for
summer that will go with
my dark brown eyes?
A. This season is all about
blues and greens; and they
work really well with brown
eyes. Blend a matte brown
shadow into the crease to
soften the look. If these
shades feel a bit much, try a
blue or green eye pencil.

Q

Im not a fan of
dry shampoo. Will
anything else extend
the life of my style?
A. Hair primers (light-

odour repelling molecules.
Apply one before styling.
Q

Are there any
products that will
give me a dewy, not
greasy, glow?
A. Try an oil-free primer. If
you can skip foundation,
great. If not, apply with a

Introducing, Falls Craziest Fashion Shows!
2
Wow...the Fall/Winter 2013 shows at Paris Fashion Week were complete drama, featuring larger-than-
life art with fashion. Check out our favourites (and YouTube the shows!)
MONCLER GAMME ROUGE: Real-life
huskies, zip wires and man-size polar
bears escorted the Narnian Queen models
down the runway, making it one helluva
entertaining show!
LOUIS VUITTON: Models took a
glamorous walk of shame
through various numbered
doors at a grand hotel, led by
Kate Moss. What will Marc
Jacobs do next?
CHANEL: Paris Grand Palais played host
to Lagerfelds latest vision: a James
Bond-esque lair, complete with every one
of Chanels 310 stores marked on a
50-feet-tall revolving globe.
KENZO: It was the first and last
show to be staged at the La
Samaritaine, a run-down,
cavernous, Parisian Art Deco
department store. Models
walked up and down two floors
on massive gilded staircases.

Show us cool, new ways to get creative, and you
have our attention! Which is why we chose DIY as
the theme for the finale party of a fashionable
weekend at the Whts In exhibition at The Kila,
New Delhi. Whts In is a luxury and fashion
exhibition by entrepreneur Sanjay Sharma and
associate Mohit Singla, featuring stalls by some of
our favourite designers. And for the first editions
after-party, Cosmo lined the tables at Dirty
Martini with rows and rows of cool props and
embellishments. Amid rounds of martinis, guests
were seen trying their hands at making cute
sunglasses, snazzy sandals, and cool tees!
Cosmo hosted a fun DIY party to
mark the close of the first
