a los 17-20 meses, y medidas de desarrollo lxico y
fonolgico a los 3-4 aos (Bernhardt y cols., 2001).
En la actualidad, la posibilidad de obtener datos de
naturaleza electrofisiolgica, con tcnicas no invasivas
que permiten obtener medidas directas de la actividad
bioelctrica cerebral en tareas tales como la discrimina-
cin de sonidos o el reconocimiento de palabras, ha
supuesto un importante avance en el conocimiento de
los procesos implicados en la percepcin del habla, as
como de su localizacin cerebral. Por ejemplo, las medi-
das basadas en la obtencin de potenciales evocados
(ERPs), con estmulos auditivos de naturaleza lingstica
y no lingstica, han puesto de manifiesto diferencias
sistemticas entre grupos de nios con trastorno espe-
cfico del lenguaje (TEL) y sus correspondientes contro-
les (Benasich y cols., 2002). Este tipo de paradigmas
tiene la ventaja de poder evaluar durante la primera
infancia las capacidades de procesamiento de distintos
tipos de materiales lingsticos (fonemas, slabas, pala-
bras) y, por tanto, se convierten en una herramienta til
para detectar poblacin con riesgo potencial de
desarrollar algn tipo de trastorno del lenguaje. Traba-
jos recientes llevados a cabo en la Universidad de Jyvs-
kyl (Finlandia) han mostrado diferencias tempranas
entre un grupo de riesgo para la dislexia y un grupo de
control, en medidas relacionadas con la discriminacin
de sonidos (recin nacidos) y la percepcin categrica
de estmulos de habla (a los 6 meses), basadas en regis-
tros de potenciales evocados auditivos (Lyytinen y cols.,
2001). Las diferencias entre el grupo de control y el de
riesgo se relacionan con la distribucin hemisfrica de
la amplitud registrada en los potenciales evocados ante
estmulos de habla, siendo menor en el hemisferio
izquierdo y mayor en el derecho para el grupo de la
poblacin de riesgo (Leppnen y cols., 2001).
En conjunto, el estudio de las capacidades tempra-
nas de percepcin del habla se muestra como una
herramienta til que puede llegar a tener un impor-
tante valor diagnstico en un futuro inmediato. La con-
fluencia entre los datos procedentes de estudios
conductuales y los que se obtienen a partir de medidas
de la actividad bioelctrica cerebral facilitar nuevos
adelantos en este prometedor mbito de investigacin.
