Lotr fellowship notes:

4- shortcut to mushrooms. The elves left them during the night. Leaving food and drink.
They want to get to buckleberry as soon as possible while trying to avoid black riders (nazgul
ring wraith etc!
"rodo did not find much info on them from gildor.
The elves are different from what #am had e$pected. %is view and personality has changed
somewhat from this e$perience. &lthough he does think they are wonderful people. %e says thy
seem above his likes and dislikes.
#ame 'uest to see the world is not important to him anymore rather his goals are now unknown
to him but he feels he must take this (ourney to realize them.
"rodo decides to go though the wood for shortcuts and to be seen less by the riders.
They have left the woods but have traveled to far to the south.
They go to farmer maggots farm. %is dogs come out and scare frodo and #am but leave pippin
alone. "armer maggot is friendly when he realizes he is seeing pippin and invited them in when
he was introduced to frodo.
)aggot said he was visited by a black rider who was looking for a baggins. %e said he would
pay maggot if he told him when he came to the farm. )aggot said he would not and told him to
be off.
"armer maggot took frodo #am and pippin to the ferry in his wagon after supper. *hen they
were going a rider came and asked for baggins. Thinking it was a black rider maggot acted
defensively however it was only merry brandybuck and the troupe was relieved to know this.
"rodo had been awaiting his arrival.
+hapter ,: a conspiracy unmasked.
*hile crossing the brandywine the hobbits spot a black figure that seems to be searching the
ground
"rodo purchased a house in buckland that was out of the way so he could get away without being
seen.

+hapter -: the old forest.
The hobbits fall asleep in the forest. .ippin gets trapped inside a tree and merry gets pinned
between its roots. & fellow named Tom /ombadil comes along and makes the trees let the
hobbits free. %e invites them to stay at his one an have supper with him. .
+hapter 0: 1n The %ouse of Tom /ombadil.
The hobbits went to toms house and were greeted by a blonde woman with blue eyes. #he wore a
green dress and a gold belt.
%er name 1s 2oldberry and she introduces hersel as the daughter of the river.
Tom gives the hobbits supper and puts them to bed.
The hobbits have strange dreams that night.
"rodo asked Tom who he is. To says he was there before the trees and rivers. &nd before the
coming of the dark lord. %e saw the sky when it was dark and fearless. (&lmost like a god
figure!
+hapter 3: fog on the barrow downs.
That morning the hobbits and Tom made their way to the
barrow downs.
"rodo rides ahead but gets lost in a fog
%e gets bucked off of his horse and then he is attacked by a barrow wight. %e awakes in a
barrow in a trance like state. Tom comes and breaks him free and gets rid of the barrow wight.
The hobbits find Tom on top of a barrow with arms full of treasure. %e takes some for him and
2oldberry and gives the hobbits daggers that they use as swords.
Tom leaves them after they get out of the forest. %e does not pass the borders of the forest.
"rodo tells his companions to refer to him as mr. 4nderhill so his real name will not be revealed.
+hapter 5: at the sign of the prancing pony.
The hobbits travel to /ree. &t the hate a man 'uestions them about who they the and their
business in /ree.
%e lets them in and they travel to the prancing pony inn. 1nside they meet mr. /utterbur the
landlord of the inn.
The hobbits have a merry time at the inn drinking and singing with the other people staying.
"rodo asks /utterbur about a man named #trider who was sitting in the corner.
"rodo goes over to strider and he tells him to make sure .ippin doesn6t reveal anything because
he is talking a lot.
"rodo goes over and disrupts .ippin but gets embarrassed of his disruption and puts the ring on
and becomes invisible.
