    Next year both of our kids are making a big transition to different schools. Josh will be entering the sixth grade, and attending Shepherd Middle School, while his older sister, Kayla, will be a Freshman at Shepherd High School. It’s as if they were just starting out in the earliest years of elementary school but then I blinked and now they are suddenly in their tweens and teens.

    LastnightJoshreachedafirstmilestoneinhismiddleschoolcareerwhenheandIattended
    orientationforsixthgradersinsidetheauditorium.HavingattendedforKayla,theinformation
    seemedveryfamiliarbutnolessscary.Lockers?Sixclasses?Advisory?Joshstwobiggest
    concernswerefiguringouthowhislockercombinationworks,andfindinghiswayfromone
    classtoanother.Iknowthathewillfigurebothjustfine,butwasremindedofhowanxiousIonce
    feltaboutrememberingmyownlockercombinationsduringthetimethatIwasinmiddleschool
    andhighschool.ItsbeentwentyyearssinceIgraduatedhighschool,andIstillhavedreams
    aboutforgettingthecombinationtomylocker.
    Forme,mykidsmoveintothemiddleandthehighschoolssignifythattheyareenteringtheBig
    Leagues.ImnotsurewhatthecutoffisbetweentheBigLeaguesandthenotsobigleagues,
    butIfirststartedtofeellikethingsweregettingseriouswhenKaylaenteredthefourthgrade.This
    iswhenyoustartedhearingthephrase,wedothistogetthemreadyforthesixthgradeduring
    parentteacherconferences.Lately,whenwevebeentoldthisithasbeenaboutJosh.
    Gonearethedayswhenwecouldbebytheirsidesandguidethemwhenevertheyneeded
    ittheyhavebeenincreasinglyontheirownforthelastfewyears.Itisliketheyvebothcrossed
    somekindofline,andcannevergoback.Theyreyoungadultsnow,sotheonlyplacetheycan
    gofromhereisadulthood,andImstilltryingtogetusedtothat.
    Nextyearwillalsomarkanothermilestoneinourfamily:thefirstyearwherewewonthaveany
    kidsintheelementaryschool.Thatwillchange,ofcourse,whenouryoungestElijahstarts
    kindergarteninaboutfouryearsfromnow.
