GET2IT
INTRODUCTION
The affects of social media sites are playing an increasingly detrimental role in the
productivity of students everywhere. The ease at which students have access to information
continues to grow but so does the temptation to use these new technologies for
procrastination and being unproductive. This is known as the Productivity Paradox (Solow,
1987). To address this problem, we have developed a programme called Get2It, which
allows users to block their accounts on social media sites using pre-set objectives. Only the
fulfilment of these pre-set objectives, such as number of words written in a Word
document, can allow the accounts to be reactivated.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
To increase the worlds quality of students through the tailored facilitation of productivity.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Productivity Apps Industry
Industry: Productivity Apps Industry. Get2It operates in this industry because it is a
downloadable programme for computers and smartphones, which aims to increase the
productivity of its users.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: High This is because buyers have a lot of choice when
it comes to downloading productivity apps. There
is generally an app that exists which represents
every idea that relates to productivity, of which
there are many (Lifehacker, 2013). Currently,
there are 32,337 productivity apps in Apples App
Store alone (App Store Metrics, 2014). Buyers

3

3
also face low switching costs and low loyalty to
specific developers, which further increases their
power.
Supplier power: Low There are many suppliers of application
developers, software and hardware that are
required to create a productivity app, and these
inputs are available at competitive prices
(Deloitte Consulting, 2011).
Threat of new entrants: High Barriers to entry are low due to readily available
inputs at competitive prices (Deloitte Consulting,
2011), which makes it relatively easy to enter the
industry. Customers do not expect specific
features of productivity apps, such as the
developer, to have a major effect on the product
and a large amount of capital is not required, so
anyone can participate in this industry.
Threat of substitutes: Low There are no real substitutes for productivity
apps. Most productivity methods come from
researching and trail and error of what works for
specific people. Productivity apps are unique in
that they offer a service that integrates
knowledge behind productivity methods and
ways of implementing solutions.
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
High Competition is quite fierce in this industry as
there are many players and consumers are quick
to move on to the latest and greatest app

4
(Austin, 2013). However, product differentiation,
such as customer profiling, is used in this industry
to influence demand for their particular product
or service.
Overall attractiveness of the industry: The Productivity Apps Industry is attractive. This is
because with differentiation of the product or service, new organisations can successfully
operate in this industry due to there being low supplier power and a low threat of substitute
products. Research shows that the industry is expected to double in size from 2013 to 2016
due to a growing audience for productivity apps (Pappas, 2014).
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
Get2It targets individuals whose productivity is decreased by their constant use of social
media sites. These people struggle with the distraction of sites such as Facebook and Twitter
and their easy accessibility. Get2it is mainly aimed at students, as 90% of 18-29 year old
Internet users, use social media sites (PewResearch, 2013) and people aged 8-18 spend
around 7 hours on it per day (Conley, 2011). Customers of Get2it seek a simple and
personalized programme that allows them to limit access to these distractions. They need
something that will allow them to meet tailored goals, which upon completion; they now
feel they deserve to go on social media. Get2It is also aimed at anyone who has work to be
done but that always seem to end up on social media sites instead.
3.4 The Product and Service
Get2It is a downloadable programme for computers and smartphones. It works by blocking
users social media accounts, not just websites, so that they cannot cheat by accessing
them on another browser or device. Get2It meets the needs of its customers in that it offers
a tailored service for the reactivation of their accounts. For example, a student may have a
1000 word essay that needs to be written on a Word document. If the student is trying to
research for their essay but continually finds that somehow they end up on Facebook, they
can set parameters on Get2It that allows their account to be blocked until they have met a
goal in relation to their essay. They might choose to set the target of 500 words, in which

5

5
upon completion, they upload the Word document to Get2It which checks the word count
and if it meets the pre-set criteria, their Facebook account will be reactivated.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
In order to deliver its service, Get2It will need suppliers of operating systems in which their
program will work, such as iOS, Android or Windows. They also need a platform for the
distribution of the program that can be done through the Apple App Store, Google Play
Store or Windows Store. Get2It mainly targets students so it could partner with educational
organisations, such as The University of Auckland, in which both parties will benefit.
Programs such as Microsoft Word could also partner with Get2It as it promotes the use of
such programs.
3.6 Strategy: Differentiation
Get2It targets a wide range of people, as it would be suited to anyone who struggles with
productivity due to social media use. Students generally fall into this category but it could be
used by anyone. It therefore has a broad competitive scope. Get2It is different from any
other productivity app that deals with social media in that Get2It blocks accounts and allows
the user to determine what needs to be done in order to unblock it. These features mean
that Get2It will follow a high cost strategy.
The overall strategy is therefore Differentiation.
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Technology Development
The most important value chain activity for this business is Technology development.
Get2It is mainly concerned with improving productivity of students. In order to achieve this,
it must keep up to date with their needs, which rapidly change with the appearance of new
technologies, such as new social media sites or programs. In order to offer a flexible and
tailored service, Get2It needs to be aware of customer trends and new developments in the
market. For example, if a new distraction (social media site) appears, Get2It will need to
update its programme to allow that new site to be selected and then blocked. By having a

6

6
strategy of differentiation, Get2It must constantly be aware of its competitors and work to
improve and modify its service as it gets copied.
3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. NEW DISTRACTION IDENTIFICATION PROCESS As new distractions are always
appearing on the Internet, Get2It must constantly assess its external business environment
to understand what its customers are doing. This is an important process as it allows Get2It
to stay relevant and functional as new social media sites come into play or new programmes
in which students use to complete their work appear.

7

7
3.8.2. PROGRAM UPDATE PROCESS As Get2It is a program that users can download from
the Internet, it must constantly be updated to support evolving devices and combat
technological problems, such as bugs. This is an important process because it will allow
Get2It to maintain a competitive advantage while pleasing its customers.

3.9.1. NEW DISTRACTION IDENTIFICATION PROCESS
Sending information to programmers
Monitoring activities of external social media and program developers
3.9.2. PROGRAM UPDATE PROCESS

Analysis of proposed solutions
3.10 Systems

3.10. 1. MESSAGING-BASED WORKFLOW SYSTEM When a new distraction is identified, a
messaging-based workflow system could be used to send the information onto the
programmers. The programmers will then be able to use that information in the program
update process to come up with improvements to Get2It. This will ensure that information
flows through the different business processes quickly so Get2It can reduce its cycle time,
keep up with customer demands and in doing so, provide a tailored service.
3.10. 2. DIGITAL WHI TEBOARD SYSTEM This system will ensure the creation of ideas
happens in a collaborative environment, which will promote teamwork and innovation.
Multiple people will be able to work on solving the same problem and through that, many
solutions can be generated. As programs like Get2It are always facing the need to upgrade
and stay relevant, working in a collaborative way will ensure that innovative ideas can be
created.
3.10. 3. SOLUTION ANALYSIS SYSTEM If employees come up with a number of solutions,
there needs to be a system that assesses the impact each one has on the business. By using
this decision support system, managers will be able to identify the best solution and predict
the affects of what will happen when implemented.

CONCLUSION
Get2It aims to minimise students time spent on social media sites while improving their
productivity in doing so. Get2It is an adaptable program that evolves as new social media
distractions appear so that it stays up to date with its customers. The information systems in
the business are critical in order for Get2It to carry out its vision as they add speed and
facilitate innovation. These systems allow improvements to be made quickly and effectively,
therefore enabling Get2It to continue to deliver a differentiated service.
