OVERVIEW
Hong Kong, a natural harbour gateway to mainland China,
has a long history as a centre for international trade and
evolved into Asias leading fnancial powerhouse in the 1970s.
Since becoming a Special Administrative Region of China in
1997, Hong Kong continued to maintain its role as a global
corporate and banking hub and strengthened its position
as a conduit for trade with China.
Hong Kongs economic success is underwritten by its
strong free trade policy: no tarif is changed on importing or
exporting goods. As a result, Hong Kong has been recognised
as the worlds most free economy since the Index of Economic
Freedom began in 1995 and is currently ranked second in
the World Banks Ease of Doing Business report.
A former British colony, Hong Kong continues to maintain
a close relationship with the UK: over 300 British companies
have regional headquarters or ofces in Hong Kong and it
is the UKs third biggest export market in the Asia Pacifc
region, afer China and India. More than half of all the
UKs investment in Asia is in Hong Kong, and the British
government works closely with the regions government
on issues such as fnancial service regulation, education
and low-carbon growth. Several major infrastructure
projects are currently underway in Hong Kong and ofer
additional opportunities for British companies in the region,
with 29 billion of investment scheduled up to 2016.
