Geography
Culture has been influenced by France & Germany since the Middle
Ages
Luxembourg is a small countrymany people remain in the same city
they were born in.
This leads to close extended families. The parents are intimately
involved in their childrens lives and education.
People are friendly but extremely private.
Strong sense of community

The citizens also have the option to take out supplementary insurance with a
non-profit health insurance agency or mutual associations affiliated to the
ministry of social security. These are known as mutelles. They pay the portion of
reimbursements that the Caisse does not cover. Many citizens take out private
insurance in addition to the Caisse de Maladie.
There are no private hospitals in Luxembourg.

Major Health Issues
Great burden on Luxembourgs population seems to be
neuropsychiatric conditions. They make up 30.4% of global
burden of disease. And it is the #1 leading group for DALYs.
The suicide rates are higher than the European average.

Depression/anxiety: 9% report to have or have had chronic
anxiety or depression, 7% undergoing medical treatment
Childrens mental health: 36% of children in a recent study
reported feeling sad at least 1 day of the week. 14% reported
feeling isolated. 9.4% reported feeling stressed.
Mental Health
Mental Health is viewed as a public priority in Luxembourg. 13% of
the overall health budget is devoted to mental health, which is the
highest among all European countries.
In 2005 the Ministry of Health ordered an in depth evaluation of the
mental health system in place. The National Psychiatric platform
was created.
In 2009 a Mental Health Plan was approved. The components
include:
-timelines for the implementation
-funding allocation for the implementation of half or more of the
items
-shift of services & resources to mental health facilities
-integration of mental health to primary care
