Social Era: up to 1600s

The social era up to the 1600s was an important era. Before the 1600s the first humans
had first arrived into America from Asia. Years later, corn was developed as a staple crop in the
highland of Mexico. From 1100-1300 C.E. Christian crusades aroused European interests in the
East. Years later, during the 1500s, in 1513, Balboa claimed all lands touched by the Pacific
Ocean for Spain. During this time Ponce de Leon explored Florida. In the late 1500s, the
Iroquois Confederacy was founded according to Iroquois legends. In 1598-1609, the Spanish
under Onate conquered Pueblo people of Rio Grande Valley. In 1558, Elizabeth I became
queen of England. In 1585, Raleigh found the lost colony at Roanoke Island.










Social Era: 1700-1775
During the years 1700-1775, many important events happened. In 1700, the populations
of the American colonies were up to about 250,000. A year later, Yale College was founded. In
1712, a slave revolt in New York was made. Later on in 1739, there was a slave revolt in
South Carolina. In 1721, the smallpox inoculation was introduced to the people. A year later,
the first edition of Poor Richards Almanac written by Benjamin Franklin was introduced.
Two years later, Jonathan Edwards began the Great Awakening in America. In 1738, the man
known as George Whitefield began to spread the Great Awakening to the world. The Princeton
College was founded in the year 1746. In 1765, the Quartering Act, the Stamp Act, and the
Stamp Act Congress were made, a year after the Sugar Act. The Sugar Act was a revenue-
raising act passed by the Parliament of Great Britain. The Stamp Act Congress was a meeting
held between October 7 and 25, 1765 in New York City, consisting of representatives from some
of the British colonies in North America; it was the first gathering of elected representatives
from several of the American colonies to devise a unified protest against new British taxation.\







Social Era: 1820-1860 (Slavery)
During the era of 1820-1860, many important parts involving slavery occurred. One
important document that involved slavery was known as the Missouri Compromise. This
doctrine was passed in 1820 between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in the United
States Congress, involving primarily the regulation of slavery in the western territories. During
this time, Missouri and Maine were admitted to the Union. Two years later, Vesey slave
conspiracies were found in Charleston, South Carolina. Frederick Douglass was an American
social reformer, orator, writer and statesman. After escaping from slavery, he became a leader of
the abolitionist movement, gaining note for his dazzling oratory and incisive antislavery writing.
Frederick Douglas published the book known as Narrative of life of Frederick Douglas.
During these times slaves were used for things such as working, mining, and house keepers. In
1829, David Walker published the book named Appeal to the Colored Citizen of the
World. A year later, William Lloyd Garrison published the book named The Liberator. In the
same year, Virginia legislatures debated on emancipation and slavery, which lasted until 1832.
In1833, Britain abolished slavery in the West Indies. In the same year, the American Anti-
Slavery Society was founded.
