BRIGHTERMOON
INTRODUCTION
Light is essential for life, in less developed places on earth almost two billion people still live
in complete darkness when night falls. Not to mention in order to supply our needs in the
dark the world spends millions of dollars on lighting to meet the demand of our modern
world, as almost 30% of the United States electricity is used to light up darkness.
(Brodrick,J,R,2004) In the Brighter Moon project we are reflecting sunlight onto places on
earth that require light by installing mirrors onto satellites and manipulate the intensity and
directions of light through our system. This can be used to increase light intensity to greatly
increase the efficiency of solar power generation as well as water heating. The system can
also provide direct lighting for places with low to no electricity at night.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
Create a way to constantly manipulate sunlight for fulfilling human needs anywhere on the
planet earth.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Mirror powered solar Industry
Industry: Mirror powered solar Industry. Our mirror sattilites provide sunlight as source of
solar energy/additional light to customers.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: Low There are no supplier found to by supplying
sunlight directly to consumers at the current
market thus consumers dont have any options.
Supplier power: Low Componets used to reflect sunlight such as
mirrors are used in every day life and are easily
and extensively made by various suppliers.(Mirror

History, n.d.)
Threat of new entrants: High Mirrors can be easilly set up as they are cheap to
afford and the light reflectiing system are simple
to establish. (The University of Waikato, 2012)
Threat of substitutes: Low Light can only be replaced by the burning of coal
or other flamable matters to create fire, which
isnt very efficient and have potential risk of
causing harm when handled uncausiously.
(American Red Cross, n.d.)
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
Low Research shows there are no existing competitors
apart from the giant mirrors in the Norwegian
town. (Jon Henley,2013)
Overall attractiveness of the industry: Relatively undiscovered market so the company
would remain monopoly for a long time.
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
In the energy market, electricity is almost everything. People need electricty for their basic
nassacities regardless of day or night. There are many ways of generating electricity using
renewable energy sources, one of them is solar powering which can be greatly enhanced
through our service. Research shows:Solar power makes up only around 0.1 percent of New
Zealands electricity.(consumer,n.d) This shows that solar power in New Zealand is far from
reaching its true potential.
The need for light is constant as it allows human activties, this is strongly linked to the need
for electricity as its the only thing that provide light instead of fire at night. Therefore our
major customers should include solar powered energy companies, governments,
organizations, and households that have their own solar panels.

3.4 The Product and Service
Thus the purpose of our service can be divided in to two catogories Eletrcitiy generation
and provide floodlighting at night with renewable energy. It is hard to see lighting as a
service because for most of us it is easily accessible and usually come with no cost at all
(sunlight during the day). By manufacturing satellites that has muiltiple mirrors with
rotatability that can accuratlly track and reflect light to its destination on earth designated
by the customers, we can provide additional sunlight for solar powered energy company
and solar powered households while not restricted by the normal sunlight hours the area
recevies because our mirrors on satelites can reflect sunlight onto areas that couldnt be
exposed in sunlight at night. We may also provide additional floodlighting service to districts
or locations that have needs, such as many countries in Africa.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
Any operations that invlove satellite construction/operation in the exosphere region would
require specialized consulting partner in the field of space administration and development.
Considering New Zealand is relatively primitive in this field of study, partnering with
internationally approved space organization such as NASA would be a major contribution
towards the company. For a system that is associating with high precision GPS and
spontaneous weather forecast, company such as Google can contribute to the system with
their advanced global positioning and observing technology the Google Map would be
ideal to partner with, its system can be used for customer to designate the location they
want to light up.
3.6 Strategy: Differentiation
Considering that instead of offering a wide variety of products and services, BrighterMoon
only offers light to consumer but it can be used in various ways (provide lighting and
enhancing solar power generation), and It has a wide range of consumers (Power
company/Governments/Households) so the market is broad.
The vision of the business is to bring light to serve people anywhere anytime on the planet,
in order to maintain a sunlight reflecting system that operates 24 hours and be able to

5

5
precisly reflect light to specific locations on earth requires a huge amount of calculations
and knowledge involved, thus the labor and maintaince cost are going to be reasonablly
high. To precislly install adjustable rotatable mirrors onto sattlite will also raise the overall
setup cost.
The overall strategy is therefore Differentiation.
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Manufacturing of the product/service
The most important value chain activity for this business is Manufacturing of the
product/service.
This is because the companys main activity for providing service to our customers is
through the use of sattlites and the carefully manufactured mirrors on them. This has never
been done before therefore the quality and precision of our service is highly essential to our
business for it to continue on pioneering the market and maintain its competitive
advantage. If the mirrors malfunction it can potentially cause harm to customers and it
would cause enormous loss to the company for the amount of money invested into the
project.
3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. TESTING PROCESS When a new mirror sattilite is manufactored, it will need to be
tested before put in to commercial use. Testing our equipment is to ensure its functionality
and stablility is cappable of serving our customer while being precise and safe, therefore the
coverage of light and the safty in the intensity of light is included in the testing process. If
the performance are not up to standard during the test the equipment will be proceed to
the engineering department for debug and revise. The equipment can only provide
commercial service facing its customers when all tests have been completed and passed.

3.8.2. PRODUCTION PLANNING PROCESS To be able to kickstart a huge project such as
BrighterMoon, planning is one of the most important process for the company to run.
Installing mirrors on satillite and operate them in our orbit requires highly sophisticated
design and structure therefore decisions must be made ahead of production. We need to

figure out the number of mirror satillites to build basing on the demand on the market so
we have enough equipments to supply light with, this is likely to variy based on customers
geographical location and their sunlight exposure and thus market research is important. If
we over produced some satelite would be left idle which can cause significant loss to the
company.

3.9 Functionalities
3.9.1. TESTING PROCESS
Ability to detect light
Errors being reported to the engineering department correctly
3.9.2. PRODUCTION PLANNING PROCESS
Ability to calculate light intensity based on the geographical location.
Production order being sent to the manufacture correctly.
3.10 Systems

3.10. 1. LI GHT FEEDBACK SYSTEM In order to support our production planning and testing
process, we need a light feedback system set up around the globe through either a network
of light sensors or through webcams that can accuratly indicate the amount of light that has
reached to that area. This is also the major key performance indicator for the companys
service/product.
3.10. 2. SUNLI GHT CALCULATION SUPPORT SYSTEM The system will be able to estimate the
effect of unique geographical location in their sunlight transmission rate and exposure. The
system help support the decision making in the production planning process by deciding
whether the area suffers from insufficient sunlight during specific seasons and gives out
informative report to the employees weather to increase production or not.
3.10. 3. NETWORK TRANSMISSI ON SYSTEM For both business process communication
between different two or more groups of people is involved, a reliable data transmission
network need to be established between both departments and light detection network for
BrighterMoon to proceed its mirror satellite order to the manufacture/engineering
department and collect information from the light sensing network to help create report
for buisness decisions to be made.

CONCLUSION
Through the technology of mirror satellites, BrighterMoon will be able to supply sunlight to
places that have needs for solar energy and floodlighting. The use of information systems
such as light feedback systems can greatly enhence the business process of light reflecting
and indicate its performance. By owning a such broad market with unique services,
BrighterMoon has the potential to create a new form of market as there has never been any
similar service provider in the past, it may continue to develop in seeking more use of solar
lighting in terms of answering customers needs in the future.
