2 THE ALCO-METER INTRODUCTION Drunk driving is a problem faced not only locally but also globally, affecting road uses all around the world. In New Zealand in particular, young people consume alcohol before or during driving causing accidents, fatalities and many problems for road users. An new innovative solution to this problem is the Alco-meter. The Alco-meter is an attachment you can connect into your car that requires the drive to pas a breathalyser test before the engine will start. This inhibits the user to drive whilst under the influence of alcohol and hence reducing the amount of road users that drive while drunk. BUSINESS SECTION 3.1 Vision We envision a world with safe roads for everyone and strive to put your safety and everyone elses safety first. 3.2 Industry Analysis: Medical Device Manufacturing Industry Industry: Medical Device Manufacturing Industry Force: High/Low: Justification: Buyer power: Low Buyer power in this industry is low because of the large range of products covered in this industry. Some of the industrys products include surgical instruments, diagnostic appartus, dental instruments, blood transfusion and IV equipment. As firms generally specialize in a one or a few products, there are not many alternatives. (Synder, 2010).
3
3 Supplier power: Low There are many firms that provide and produce medical devices. The top three medical device manufacturing firms in 2012 by their revenue include Johnson & Johnson, GE Healthcare and Siemens Healthcare. Therefore supplier power is low. (Medical Product Outsourcing, 2013). Threat of new entrants: Low The threat of new entrants in this industry is low because of the large costs associated with the start up and continuation of the firm. The government also implements high taxes and regulations on the medical industry causing the threat of new entrants to be low. (Synder, 2010). Threat of substitutes: Low The threat of substitute products is low as there is no or few alternative products or services available to fill out the same function medical devices do. Rivalry among existing competitors: Low The rivalry among existing competitors is low. Most firms in this industry produce differentiated products and each medical device generally has one main provider. In reference to breathalysers, there is one main provider, GlobalTech but their breathalyzers are different from the Alco-meter. (GlobalTech Corporation, 2012). Overall attractiveness of the industry: The medical device manufacturing industry is an attractive industry as the industry analysis shows that most of the Porters Five Forces are low, which shows that it would be a good industry to enter.

4 3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs Our customers are mainly parents and their teenage or young adult children. As young people (aged 15 - 24) are the main contributors to alcohol related crashes in New Zealand, making up half of the total alcohol/ drug affected drivers involved in fatal crashes, they are the ones who need the most attention. (Ministry of Transport, 2013). Parents can encourage their children to use the alco-meter so they can successfully control and monitor their actions until the influence of alcohol. 3.4 The Product and Service Our device is simple to use and manage. It is an attatchment that can connect into your car, requiring you to pass a breath test before the engine is allowed to start. It measures the amount of alcohol in the users bloodstream and if over a certain limit ie per New Zealand regulation, 0 micrograms per litre for users under the age of 20 and 400 micrograms per litre over 20 years of age. Thus the Alco-meter prevents the user while driving whilst under the influence of alcohol. 3.5 Suppliers and Partners An example of a supplier for the Alco-meter would be Johnson & Johnson. J&J have many side companies that we would be able to use to make an innovative version of our product. Similarily, GE healthcare would also be another supplier that could make an innovative version of our product. An example of a partner we could have is car manufacturing companies such as Toyota or Honda who we can develop the Alco-meter with so that it best fits with the vehicle. Another partner we could have is with government funded agencies that are trying to discourage drunk driving and will make sure our product meets with all regulations. 3.6 Strategy: Cost leadership The cost strategy for the alco-meter is low cost, we want our product to be affordable to discourage a large amount of people driving under the influence of alcohol.
5
5 While we are focusing on young adults, and their parents, the competitive scope of our product is broad market. We want to be able to appeal to a large market to prevent as many alcohol related accidents as we can. The overall strategy is therefore Cost Leadership. 3.7 Value Chain Activity: Market and sell the product or service. The most important value chain activity for this business is Market and sell the product or service. This is because we want to get our product used worldwide and spread out in the market as much as possible. Our vision is to create safer roads and by marketing and selling the product, we will successfully be able to prevent users driving under the influence. 3.8 Business Processes 3.8.1. CUSTOMER FEEDBACK PROCESS - This is one of the key business processes as we want to get feedback on how efficiently our device is working and if its doing the job its intended to do. Obtaining feedback allows us to communicate with the customer and see if we need to make any changes to our product to make sure its more innovative or efficient.

7 3.8.2. PRODUCT DEVELOPEMENT PROCESS - This busines process is important because it ensures that our product is fully developed and is innovative. It makes sure the Alco-meter is successful and will fufil its required function of preventing road users from driving.

3.10. 1. CONTACT CRM SYSTEM - A contact CRM system maintains all customer information. This is important so that the business can contact past customers in the future for feedback and for prospective sales. Without feedback, the Alco-meter would not be able to improve and any inefficienies would stay unknown to the business unless tested by themselves. 3.10. 2. FEEDBACK SUPPORT SYSTEM - The Feedback support system is important because it collects and distributes the feedback forms from the customers. The business needs feedback to ensure their product is running efficiently and is preventing road users from driving under the influence otherwise their product would not be doing its function. 3.10. 3. CECIL - Cecil allows the members of business to communicate with each other online. Through cecil, members will be able to share ideas and help to develop each others ideas together. Ensuring the sharing of ideas will allow an efficient and reliable product to be put avaliable on the market and because of this will lessen the amount of accidents on the roads.

10 CONCLUSION The Alco-meter is a new and innovative way to prevent road users from driving while drunk. It will not only prevent some fatal crashes but also reduce traffic on the roads and lessen the amount of minor crashes. With new information technology, we will be able to construct a new line of breathalysers, ones that can be used for personal or commercial use. Our roads will no longer be unsafe but instead a much safer place to drive on. REFERENCES
