RANKPI Training 1 Nokia Siemens Networks RANKPI Training / THa / 04.04.2008 Introduction For internal use 2 Nokia Siemens Networks RANKPI Training / THa / 04.04.2008 General The aimof this training is togive toparticipants a a detailed detailed overview overviewof the of the relevant relevant RAN RAN counters counters and KPIs and KPIs to to evaluate evaluate the performance of the the performance of the main main RAN RAN procedures procedures. . The course course is is theoretical theoretical. . It It s s not not about about optimisation optimisation cases cases or or trouble trouble - - shooting shooting issues issues. . Neverthless Neverthless, some case , some case studies studies have have been been introduced introduced in the material in the material to to support support theoretical theoretical presentation presentation. . Participants Participants are are invited invited to to use use the the evaluation evaluation form formin in order order to to suggest suggest any any topic topic (e.g. (e.g. specific specific procedure/ procedure/functionality functionality + + counters counters) ) to to be be added added in the material in the material for for future future sessions sessions. . Any Any proposal proposal will will be be more more than than welcome welcome For internal use 3 Nokia Siemens Networks RANKPI Training / THa / 04.04.2008 What is a Key Performance Indicator Key Key performance performance indicator indicator (KPI) is a function of counters. In its simplest form, KPI is an individual counter. The idea behind the KPI concept is that the information of one counter value is rarely enough. On the other hand, the operator needs to get information on network performance in a compact format, in order to minimise humananalysis effort. With carefully definedKPIs, the operator can easily see the overall status of network performance, e.g. how RRC or RAB setups succeed, is the RAB drop ratio on an acceptable level, are there severe problems in handovers, and many other criticities. For internal use 4 Nokia Siemens Networks RANKPI Training / THa / 04.04.2008 The course structure has the purpose to: Describe the main counters: their triggering point their usability Suggest the main KPIs for performance analysis Define easy and practical rules for quick detection of problems in the network For internal use 5 Nokia Siemens Networks RANKPI Training / THa / 04.04.2008 Factors Affecting Network Performance Many factors and network elements can affect the network performance: Quality of network equipment, both hardware and software BTS, RNC, PS Core, CS Core and transmission equipment Performance of UE and field measurement tools inter-operability, sensitivities of measurement parameters, level of accuracy Quality of network planning and optimisation coverage, interference, parameter tuning, capacity dimensioning Quality of network implementation- site and network equipment installation, integration and commissioning Quality of network operation and maintenance Multi-vendor environment Application servers, IP Backbone Measurement method test setup, service dependent, cluster or system level, area type (dense urban, urban, suburban, rural).
