1.0 MATERIAL

Material shall be AVIKOTE AV650 as manufactured and supplied by Arabian Vermiculite
Industries, Dammam, Saudi Arabia.

2.0 THICKNESSES

AVIKOTE AV 650 shall be applied in the AVI recommended thicknesses as per the UL-1709
Rapid Rise Fire or NPD, BS476: Part 20: 1987; Appendix D to meet the hydrocarbon fire-rating
requirement and/or the J et-Fire requirement of OTI 95 634.

3.0 GENERAL

3.1 SUPPLY AND STORAGE

Material shall be delivered in original unopened packages bearing the name of the
manufacturer, the brand and proper Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. labels for fire
hazard and fire resistance classification.

Material shall be stored dry, off ground, on pallets and shall be protected under
cover away from the sweating walls and other damp surfaces.

3.2 CAULK

The caulk for use where AVIKOTE AV 650 terminates to the steel shall be an oil resistant
silicone rubber or Polysulphide.

3.3 REINFORCEMENT

Metal reinforcement shall be galvanized steel or plastic coated mesh of size 25mm to
50mm mesh having a wire diameter of 1.0mm to 1.6mm OR expanded metal lath 3.4
lbs per square yard (1.8 kg/m
2
).

3.4 ATTACHMENTS

Steel pins of diameter 3mm by 11mm long with steel split washers shall be used to
hold the mesh reinforcement in place. Alternatively, steel nuts can be welded to steel
surface to be used as spacers/ supports. These pins/spacers shall be fixed at a
maximum pitch of 406mm.

Surfaces where direct welding is not allowed, alternate arrangements will be made to
prepare steel base for welding of steel pins. This is especially required for surfaces of
pressure vessel shell, like Bullets and Spheres. Contact AVI for specific requirements.

3.5 WEATHERPROOF COAT

Finished and cured AVIKOTE AV 650 shall be top coated with a two-part
polyurethane or epoxy top coating material. The average dry film thickness shall be
80 to 100 microns applied in two coats. A combination of first coat of Epoxy followed
by second coat of Polyurethane finish could also be adopted.

4.0 APPLICATION

4.1 The steel surface to be coated with AVIKOTE AV 650 shall have the metal pins
fixed to its surface and the whole steel surface shall be primed with alkali
resistant corrosion protection paint system. NO TOPCOAT SHALL BE APPLIED
ON THE PRIMED SURFACE. Please contact AVI representative to check on
Primer acceptability.

4.2 Reinforcement mesh shall be firmly attached to the fixing pins with 18g
galvanized steel tie wire and shall overlap a minimum of 50mm at all joints. No
more than 3 mesh thicknesses shall be permitted at any joint location.
Reinforcement mesh shall be kept away from the steel surface by about 6mm
distance. Care shall be taken to provide additional pins around the openings
in the vessel skirt areas so as to have mesh held firmly in-place.

4.3 The areas surrounding the application shall be protected with proper masking.

4.4 AVIKOTE AV 650 shall be mixed and spray applied in accordance with AVIs
application recommendations. Using a suitable metering device, 13 to 15 litres
of CLEAN POTABLE water per bag of AVIKOTE AV 650 shall be added to the
paddle mixer as the blades are turning. Mixer speed shall be the lowest
possible. Add AVIKOTE AV 650 to the mixer and continue mixing until the mix is
lump free with a creamy mixture. In any case, the mixing time will be between
1-1/2 minutes to 2-1/2 minutes. OVERMIXING of the material is not
recommended. The target mixer density shall be in the range of 890 kg/m
3
as
measured in a one-litre cup. The target nozzle density shall be 1055 kg/ m
3
.

4.5 AVIKOTE AV 650 can also be trowelled directly from the mixer or after passing
through the spray nozzle. For trowelling from the mixer, use around 12 litres of
water per bag. The mixing procedure and timing shall be the same as
delineated in 4.5 above. The target mix density for this use is 900 kg/ m
3
to 1025
kg/m
3
. This mix density must be achieved to ensure proper in-place density.

4.6 PRIOR to the start of application of AVIKOTE AV 650, the air and substrate
temperature shall be between 4
O
C to 40
O
C. There is however no limit on

maximum humidity. Total thickness of material shall be built up in a series of
coats to the required final thickness.

4.7 In general, all application shall be done following the steel section profile.
Sections up to the depth size of 200 mm are normally required by most of the
specifications to be solid fill. Hollow box application shall only be adopted if
accepted by the client. Should Hollow Box method be adopted, provide
galvanized steel sheet fabricated channel supports in the web areas for
sections with overall depth of 400mm or more. These supports shall be press fit
in to the web area and spaced @400mm c/c.

4.8 Completed areas of AVIKOTE AV 650 shall be wrapped, soaked and
protected from drying out until full curing has taken place. A period of seven
days is recommended for this purpose.

4.9 All terminations to steel shall be finished 45
O
-beveled slope. All terminations to
the concrete foundation shall be finished with proper slope. All terminations
will be finished with a V-notch.

4.10 The finished cured areas of AVIKOTE AV 650 shall be left to dry with moisture
meter reading of below 4. Dry surface shall be top coated with two-part
urethane or epoxy top coating material. It is suggested that the first coat be
applied thinned down 10% to 15% on dry clean surface. Full concentrated
second coat shall be applied to have the total dry film thickness of 80 to 100
microns. Another alternative would be to apply a two-component epoxy
(concrete) primer prior to the application of full concentrated two coats of
Polyurethane topcoat. Total finished dry film thickness shall however be 80 to
100 microns.

4.11 Sealant caulk shall be applied at all terminations in the V-notch as prepared in
item 4.9 above.

5.0 PATCH REPAIR

5.1 Damaged area of fireproof coating shall be cut back to sound material,
retaining existing mesh reinforcement in place wherever possible. The outer
layer of coating shall be cut back further to expose a minimum of 150mm of
the inner sound material and mesh to form a staggered joint.

5.2 Exposed steel shall be painted with Firebond.

5.3 Apply AVIKOTE AV 650 in a minimum of two layers and keep the finished areas

wrapped and soaked to protect from drying until fully cured.

5.4 All terminations to steel shall be finished 45
O
-beveled slope. All terminations to
the concrete foundation shall be finished with proper slope.

5.5 The finished repaired areas when fully cured shall be top coated with two-part
polyurethane or epoxy top coating material. Topcoat shall be applied in two
coats as delineated in 4.10 above.

5.6 Sealant caulk shall be applied at all terminations in the V-notch as prepared in
item 5.4 above.

Note: This method statement is a typical guideline only and can be adopted to meet the
specific project requirement.
