AVEVA Space Management

Create and manage the automatic subdivision

of a ship into spaces
AVEVA Space Management is part of the AVEVA Marine suite of applications. It
is a tool for creating and managing the automatic subdivision of the ship into
spaces. These spaces can be used for the highly advanced and efcient design
of complex ships, even creating logical dependencies between the designed
objects and the room or space attributes.
AVEVA Space Management generates a full, room-oriented approach to the ship,
which can be reused in other modelling disciplines. As the design evolves, spaces
can be interrogated regarding all objects within each one. Their properties can
be accessed to obtain, for example, the total heat output, weights and much
more. The hull model is divided by the space boundaries and exact calculation of
weights, centres of gravity, areas, and so on, and can be compared with estimates
stored within the space arrangement.
Different build strategy options can be progressed, to develop the optimum work
breakdown structure for fabrication and installation; work content and surface
treatment areas are calculated. Insulation can be specied and assigned to space
boundaries and represented symbolically in drawings. Estimates for insulation
material in any given space can be calculated.
z Reduces risk in the design of
more complex ships including
cruise ships, naval surface
vessels, submarines, ferries and
offshore supply vessels.
z A new tool for simulations,
estimations and decisions which
reduces project risk by enabling
a what-if approach.
z Enables advanced
customisation, based on 3D
volumes of the ship.
z Better productivity for General
Arrangement-based drawings,
for example, re insulation
plans as an automatic output.
z Better cost control as a result
of precise, early estimations of
insulation materials and costs.
z Greater production efciency
through the optimisation of
block structure weight and
design.

In the early stages of ship design many requirements relating to the
spatial layout have to be considered and met. Compartments need to
be arranged to meet functional and operational requirements, and
the boundaries between them specied. Spaces must be reserved for
different support systems, such as spaces running through multiple
compartments for interconnecting pipes, cables and ventilation.
Spaces also need to be allocated for major machinery, equipment and
access. All of these will be subject to particular design regulations
including re resistance and allowed content. In later design stages,
planning, monitoring and follow-up must be carried out on weights,
centres of gravity, number of parts, areas, drawing lists, attributes,
and so on, all related to the spatial arrangement of the ship.
A space arrangement is dened by an envelope (e.g. the shell
surface and the upper deck forming a closed volume) and a number
of boundaries derived from the Common Reference Model. The
automatically generated spaces that build up the arrangement
can then be further processed spaces can be merged, and spaces
from other arrangements, or any closed volumes, can be added or
subtracted from the arrangement. All modelling work is carried out
on the Common Reference Model, never on individual spaces within
an arrangement. Two different arrangements, made for different
purposes, will therefore share many of the modelled boundaries and
will be topologically dependent on the same boundaries. This will
reduce the time needed when making changes or when checking
alternative designs.
Many different subdivisions of the ship can be used at the same time
for varied purposes, such as:
z SOLAS classication of rooms
z design zones
z subcontractors subdivisions
z painting areas
z compartmentation and stability assessment
z production planning
z general arrangement
z re/noise/thermal insulation plans
z heat dissipation.
Creating the space arrangement
z Automatically create a ship subdivision in spaces using set
Reference Surface Objects
z Associate properties to volumes and bounding surfaces
z Copy attributes from one space to another
z Join/merge existing spaces to create bigger ones
z Handle complex shapes as boundaries for spaces
z Create as many arrangements as needed.
Using the space arrangement
z Apply insulation properties from insulation catalogue to faces of
the spaces; re insulation general arrangement as a free output
with re insulation legend.
z Outtting designers can query space and surface attributes in
order to make the right decision regarding pipe/HVAC/cable trays
penetration systems, pipe or HVAC insulation, water-tightness,
and more.
z Automatically obtain insulation weights, volumes, costs and
materials lists once properties are assigned to spaces.
z Dened spaces and arrangements are stored with the model of
the ship and can be reused to monitor progress or deviations from
initial calculations.
z Create graphical reports on criteria for space attributes; e.g.
actual steel weight compared to estimated weight.
z Calculate weight, centre of gravity and material list for Hull and
Outtting within a block.
z Calculate welding length.
z Create physical blocks in AVEVA Hull Detailed Design from AVEVA
Space Management with reference to the boundaries selected.
z Manage pipe/HVAC penetration in accordance with water-tightness
and SOLAS classication of the penetrated bulkheads/decks.
z Generate a General Arrangement (GA) drawing with relevant
attributes.
z Enables block splitting simulation and adjustments prior to
physical block denition.
z Enables a consistent design between GA-based and hull-based
activities for large or complex ships.
z Enables a fully room-oriented calculation of painting areas;
any ctitious surface can even be used as a delimiter, enabling
denition of more than one painting rule within a single room.
Used with PML
z Easily reuse data and attributes in PML (Programming Macro
Language) scripts for more complex customisation.
z All attributes are available for PML programming.
z PML programming enables the next level of rule-based design.
