Kuimba Choir With Moyo
Kuimba Choir started with the arrival of Karen Behn in Kaslo. She chose the
name Kuimba for her fedgling group because of her love of African music its
strong rhythms made for moving and dancing, lovely open harmonies, and the joy
both choirs and audiences found in the music. Kuimba means we sing in Swahili.
Te choirs frst rehearsals began in September of 2011 in the Langham Te-
atre with about 20 members. Te mandate of the choir was to sing folk music
from around the world, to always include at least one African song in perform-
ance, to build the individual skills and ensemble work, and eventually lead to a
varied repertoire from Palestrina to Bach and Handel and modern composers
such as American born Eric Whitacre.
Tis is the third season of the choir. Tey now rehearse in the hall of St. An-
drews Church and they love the acoustic and the space to move as they practice.
Tis May 30 and 31, the year end concert will be performed in both Argenta and
Kaslo with the popular Marimba group Moyo.
On Friday, May 30 at 7:30 pm take in the show at the Argenta Hall. Ten on
Saturday, May 31 the Choir performs at St. Andrews at 7 pm. Tickets are on sale
at Willow Home Gallery and Sunnyside Naturals and are $10; children under
12 by donation.

Tis years citizen of the year is a roll-up-your-sleeves
kind of person who brings a great deal of experience and
enthusiasm to everything she tackles and she has been
tackling things for a lot of us in the Kaslo area ever since
she moved here barely ten years ago.
She has assisted many organizations including Com-
munities in Bloom, Kaslo Infonet and, of course, the
Kaslo and Area Chamber of Commerce. As the chamber
secretary she transformed communication and helped
increase the membership exponentially! She worked tire-
lessly to launch the new chamber website and brought
us into the Facebook age. Maggie saw us through many
other projects, all the while keeping the administra-
tion of the chamber so meticulously that even now, 13
months later, we still havent been able to completely fll
her shoes.
Since the fall of 2012 Maggie Winters has worked dili-
gently to try to save our 24/7/365 emergency health care
here in Kaslo. Her energy has inspired the Health Care
Working Group and now the Health Care Select Com-
mittee. Te information she has brought to the table and
the knowledge she has gained since doing this work has
been and continues to be critical to the ongoing search
for the best long-term solution for Kaslo and area, and
to our current recruitment eforts.
She is endlessly patient. She loves this community
and were lucky to have her.
Her help to facilitate what was originally a little local
committee to talk and walk with the big guys at Interior
Health, coupled with her prior years of experience, might
be the only reason IHA ever agreed to talk to us at all!
Kaslo needs more selfess and committed people like Mag-
gie to bring their talent and energy. Maggie demonstrates
everything good about new people moving into our area
and we are grateful to her for the endless volunteer hours
she has dedicated to our community!
Tank you Maggie Winters for choosing Kaslo!!!

From Page To Stage
Holley Rubinsky at Writing Retreats Kaslo worked with
Cranbrook playwright Denine Milner over a period of
eighteen months on her script Front-Door Women. Now,
thanks to funding from CBTs Area D Community Initia-
tive grant, Vancouver actress and director Barbara Pollard
(Moms the Word) will be leading a script development
workshop of this brand-new play in Kaslo over the frst
weekend in June, culminating in a dramatic staged reading
starring Lynn van Deursen, Colette Enns and Darcie Mat-
thews, at the Langham Teatre on Sunday, June 8 at 7 pm.
Te script workshop weekend involves
fne-tuning the plays dialogue, introducing
basic blocking, and, as anyone who has seen
live theatre knows, working on the delivery and
timing. By Sunday the play gets up on its feet
in front of a live audience for a staged reading
no set, no theatrical lighting just the voices
and fow of this fast-paced, funny play with a
message. Te audience will also have a chance
to talk to the playwright and the director about
the dynamic process of script development.
Playwright Denine Milner wrote Front-
Door Women with small, rural theatres in
mind small cast, minimal set; the Langham
is the perfect venue. Milner is the frst artist
selected for the Langham Cultural Societys
Artist in Residency program, inaugurated
this year to celebrate the Langhams 40th an-
niversary. Van Deursen and Rubinsky hope
to establish an annual script development
workshop, working with playwrights from all
around the province, on scripts suitable for
vibrant small theatres with limited resources.
Sunday evening, June 8, promises to be
exciting and entertaining, live theatre in its
infancy. Tickets will be available at the door.
Students $5, adults $10.

Music for Life (Te parent organization for Te African
Childrens Choir) works in seven African countries such
as, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Nigeria, Ghana and
South Africa. MFL has educated over 52,000 children and
impacted the lives of over 100,000 people through its re-
lief and development programs during its history.
MFL purpose is to help create new leadership for to-
morrows Africa, by focusing on education.
Te African Childrens Choir has had the privilege to
perform before presidents, heads of state and most recent-
ly the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II, for her dia-
mond jubilee. Te Choir has also had the honor of singing
alongside artists such as Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox,
Keith Urban, Mariah Carey, Michael W. Smith and other
inspirational performers!
Most recently, the African Childrens Choir accompan-
ied South African opera singer, Pumeza Matshikiza, on
some tracks for her debut album. Te African Childrens
Choir is a nonproft humanitarian and relief organization
dedicated to helping Africas most vulnerable children to-
day so they can help Africa tomorrow.

Internet Cat Film Festival Raises Fun
And Funds For Nelson SPCA
Hello, my name is Whiskers and Im a bi-colour Amer-
ican shorthair. Cat, to you humans who fock to YouTube
for cheap entertainment at our expense but who seldom
see us for who we really are. But when I heard that the
Civic Teatre was ofering an opportunity for felinedom
to graduate to the Big Screenand raise money for the
Nelson SPCAI said: Im in.
Just For Cats: Internet Cat Video Festival runs Tursday,
June 12 at the Nelson Civic Teatre. Doors open for the
Kitty Corral Adoption (youre just going to have to come
to see what that is) at 6:30 pm, with the show at 7:30 pm.
Jason, the theatre manager, told me that Nelson funny-
man Lucas Myers is going to MC, but he cant upstage us
no matter how funny he thinks he is.
Teres live music by Clara Venice, who plays a thing
called a theramin. It is spooky how she gets that thing to
work without even touching it (Clara could be an hon-
ourary cat; I didnt touch that glass of milk that fell of
the table either) and besides that, shes purrrrrrty. A live
dance performance by the Show-Cats is sure to be slinky.
Jason tells me there will be some local cat video content as
well and asked me to remind you that the deadline for video
submission is Monday, June 2 at noon. On Youtube you can
see us in boxes, chasing dogs, dancing, singing, and even sitting
around looking grumpy. I know you can do better than that.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.civictheatre.
ca. You can also buy a VIC (Very Important Cat) package
that includes a post-screening event at Spirit Bar featuring
more from Clara Venice, Te all female DJ collective Meow
Mix and live painting by Avril Fox, beginning at 9:30 pm.
Come out for a great night for a great cause! Dress up in
your best cat costume and celebrate your inner feline. To
fnd out about tickets and your own cat video submissions

Kootenay Studio Arts Adds More
Depth To Programming
Program additions to Kootenay Studio Arts (KSA) at
Selkirk College will open new pathways to students and
new doors to working artists in the region. Afer a collab-
orative review of the Nelson art school that included input
from current students, instructors, artists, community mem-
bers and Selkirk College administration, KSA will begin new
oferings starting this September. Te major changes include
the addition of a two-year diploma pathway and creation of
an Open Studio Advanced Certifcate.
Te roots of Kootenay Studio Arts in Nelson go back
to 1958 and over the years the program oferings have
changed, adapting to the needs of the region. Currently
located at the Victoria Street Campus, Selkirk College
took over administration of KSA in 2006.
Last year KSA ofered certifcate programs in Blacksmith-
ing, Metal Casting, Ceramics, Jewelry and Textiles. Tose
programs lasted between four and ten months, focussing
most of that time on intense studio work. Te certifcate
programs will remain intact with a slight revision that will
ofer an additional combined Metal Casting/Blacksmith-
ing certifcate in a program called Sculptural Metal.
Starting in September, students will have the option to
continue their studies at KSA with a second year in the dip-
loma stream. Year one will include the existing ten-month
certifcate courses and in year two students will combine
suitable pre-existing courses in other Selkirk College pro-
grams with a directed studies requirement that will see
them spend at least 18 hours a week in their chosen studio.
Tis past winter KSA experimented with an open stu-
dio concept which allowed recent graduates, working art-
ists and students an opportunity to work together. With
the guidance of KSA instructors, artists were able to take
advantage of the tools and equipment on campus to build
and expand their body of work. Te test run was a success
and has now been formalized as the Open Studio Ad-
vanced Certifcate.
Tis opens up the opportunity for grads and practicing
artists in the community to be more involved in KSA. It
creates a space where collaboration and mentoring can
be carried out by artists with a wide range of experience.
Registration for KSAs fall programming is now being ac-
cepted. Find out more at selkirk.ca
