The process of certifying the integrated management system
for quality, safety at work and occupational health and
environment protection has been successfully completed.
The proof for the implementation of ISO 9001, ISO14001 and
OHSAS18001 standards requirements is now represented by
the three certificates issued further to several audit procedures
performed in December 2011 and May 2012 by Lloyds Register
Quality Assurance.
The handing-over ceremony of these certificates took place on
7-th of June 2012. The event has been attended by the shipyards
low, middle and top management representatives. Mister Petris or
Jechel Management Systems Operations Manager of Lloyds
Register Romania, guest of honor, handed over personally the
certificates to the managing director of Damen Shipyards Galati,
Mr. Flemming Sorensen and congratulated the management
team for such achievement.
In terms of quality, the cooperation between Lloyds Register
and our company started in 1997 being, from the beginning, a
real success. Mister Petris or Jechel remembered with pleasure
that, 15 years ago, when the shipyard undertook the first steps to
obtain the quality system certification, he was part of the audit
team which assessed our shipyard for the first time.
Damen Shipyards Galati purpose is to focus attention on clients,
on health and safety at work and environment protection. LRQAs
professionalism represents a guarantee for achieving this goal.
Also, certification of the integrated management system stands
as a business card of our company both at national level and
especially at international level, enhancing the clients trust in
the quality of our products.

CERTIFICATION OF THE INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Procesul de certificare a sistemului de management integrat al
calitii, securitii i sntii ocupaionale i protecia mediului,
s-a finalizat cu succes.
Dovada implementrii cerinelor standardelor ISO 9001, ISO14001 i
OHSAS18001, o reprezint cele trei certificate emise n urma mai multor
proceduri de audit efectuate n luna decembrie 2011 i n luna mai 2012
de ctre Lloyds Register Quality Assurance.
Ceremonia de nmnare a certificatelor a avut loc n data de 7 iunie 2012.
La eveniment au fost invitai reprezentanii managementului de nivel
superior, mediu i inferior din cadrul antierului. Domnul Petrior Jechel
Management Systems Operations Manager la Lloyds Register Romnia,
oaspetele de onoare, a nmnat personal certificatele directorului general
al antierului Naval Damen Galai, domnul Flemming Sorensen i a
felicitat conducerea pentru aceast realizare.
CERTIFICAREA SISTEMULUI DE MANAGEMENT INTEGRAT
n domeniul calitii, colaborarea dintre Lloyds Register i societatea
noastr a nceput n anul 1997 i a fost, nc de la debut, un real succes.
Domnul Petrior Jechel i-a amintit cu plcere de faptul c, n urm cu
15 ani, cnd antierul parcurgea paii iniiali pentru obinerea certificrii
sistemului calitii, a fcut parte din echipa de audit care a evaluat pentru
prima dat antierul.
Obiectivul antierului Naval Damen Galai este acela a focaliza atenia
asupra clientului, a sntaii i securitii n munc dar i asupra proteciei
mediului nconjurtor. Profesionalismul organismului de certificare LRQA
reprezint o garanie pentru realizarea la cel mai nalt nivel a acestui
deziderat.
De asemenea, certificarea sistemului de management integrat este ca o
carte de vizit a societii noastre - att pe plan naional, dar mai ales
internaional, sporind ncrederea clienilor n calitatea produselor realizate.

In the current economic climate, a fantastic dynamics put
pressure on our actions requiring us to give daily proofs that
we are even better in what we do and that we can easily adapt
ourselves to any market change.
As Financial Director of DSGa, I can say that, based on 2011
figures, all undertaken actions, by virtue of above statements,
have led our shipyard to a satisfactory result (profits of
approximately 3.1 million Euro).
The steady efforts to increase productivity, to comply with quality
standards and delivery terms resulted, until now, in a significant
increase of our order book. Thus, the number of contracted
orders exceeds currently the level estimated during last year for
the same period of time, and our expectations related to the
results for years 2012 and 2013 increased proportionally. This is
a good sign indeed! It stands as a confirmation of the fact that
we successfully faced a difficult period when we realized that
potential for success really exists, even under severe economic
conditions. DSGa success is also the result of our desire to remain
an important member of the great Damen family, and the
strategies for increasing the companys competitiveness within
the Group will play, more than ever, a catalyzing role for our
activities.

n contextul economic actual, o dinamic fantastic pune
presiune pe aciunile noastre i impune zi de zi s demonstrm
c suntem tot mai buni n ceea ce facem i c putem s ne
adaptm rapid la schimbrile pieei.
Ca i Director Financiar al SNDG pot afirma, n baza cifrelor anului
2011, c toate aciunile ntreprinse, n virtutea afirmaiilor de mai
sus, au condus antierul la realizarea unui rezultat satisfctor (un
profit de aproximativ 3.1 milioane de Euro).
Eforturile susinute de cretere a productivitii, de respectare a
calitii i a termenelor de livrare au determinat, pn n prezent, o
cretere continu a portofoliului de comenzi. Astfel, numrul
comenzilor contractate n acest moment depete nivelul estimat
n anul precedent pentru aceeai perioad de timp, iar ateptrile
legate de rezultatele anilor 2012 i 2013 au crescut i ele direct
proporional. Acesta este cu adevrat un semn bun! Este o
confirmare a faptului c am nfruntat cu succes o perioad dificil n
care am contientizat c exist potenial de reuit, chiar i n
condiii economice severe. Succesul SNDG este i rezultatul
dorinei de a fi n continuare un membru important n marea familie
Damen, iar strategiile de cretere a competitivitii companiei n
cadrul Grupului vor avea, mai mult ca niciodat, rolul de catalizator
al activitii desfurate.

A DIFFERENT WEEK IN SCHOOL
The week 2 6-th of April 2012 was dedicated to
extracurricular and extra-school educational activities
within the program A different week in schools.
This program offered to pupils and students unique
and attractive lessons. Not only they were given
theoretical presentations, as usually attended in
classrooms, but got involved in grown-up-like
activities.
Damen Shipyards Galati participated in this program,
being like an opened book for the pupils of a
IV-th grade of Secondary School no. 28 and a VIII-th
grade of Secondary School no. 42, Galati.
The children were accompanied by teachers but also
by some of our colleagues. Their role was to answer
the numerous questions and, in the same time, to
guide visitors interest in shipbuilding. At Hull building
division IA, the students were extremely impressed
by the size and massive appearance of JSSs parts 2,
3 and 4. Also, the 8.000 cm tanker for Damen Bergum
recently launched represented an important point
of attraction.
All these new experiences, complex information and
visual surprises took their breath away and resulted
in original conclusions such as real life beats any
movie!
Finally, the children received with pleasure pens and
bracelets with our companys logo proofs of a visit
which maybe, over years, will determine them to
become leading shipbuilders.

A DIFFERENT WEEK IN SCHOOL
EDITION 2012
The Trade Union organizes the fishing contest on a yearly basis,
with support from Damen Galati administration.
Due to the great interest shown by our employees regarding
participation in this contest, the organizers had to include a
pre-selection stage in the program.
From a total of 180 competitors, subject to the amount of caught
fish, 25 winners have been selected during the first stage. They
participated in the final stage of the competition which was held
in a specially arranged location on 21-st of June.
Weather was in favor of the organizers and competitors who
prepared their best specific accessories or the most sophisticated
fishing lures intended to fool the biggest fish, carefully hidden
below the water surface.
The contest began at 6 oclock, after a short training that drew
the attention on any potential risk. Then, people turned to work:
competitors with fishing and organizers with setting fire to the
grills.
At 11 oclock, the competitors gathered to the scale which
decided the final standing. The most hardworking and lucky
fishermen are:
n 1st Simion Costel, hull division I Welding 4,87 kg of fish;
n 2nd Moise Daniel, hull division I Assembly 4,25 kg of fish;
n 3rd Clapa Dumitru, hull division I Welding 4 kg of fish.
The contest winners were rewarded with fishing tools (rods and
reels) while the rest of participants received fishing poles.
Finally, the competitors enjoyed a portion of grilled steak and
sausages and indulged themselves with beer, accompanying, of
course, their friendly chats with fishing stories, more or less true!...

EDITIA 2012
Concursul de pescuit sportiv este organizat anual de ctre sindicat, cu
sprijinul conducerii SN Damen Galai.
Datorit interesului mare manifestat de ctre salariaii notri n ceea ce
privete participarea la acest concurs, organizatorii au fost nevoii s
includ n program o etap de preselecie.
Dintr-un total de 180 de concureni, n funcie de cantitatea de pete
pescuit, au fost selectai n prima etap, 25 de ctigtori. Acetia au
participat la etapa final a concursului care s-a desfurat ntr-un loc
special amenajat, n data de 21 iunie.
Vremea a inut cu organizatorii i concurenii care i-au pregtit cele mai
bune accesorii specifice pescuitului sau cea mai sofisticat nad cu care
s pcleasc cel mai mare pete, aflat sub luciul apei.
Concursul a nceput la ora 6, dup un scurt instructaj prin care s-a atras
atenia asupra potenialelor riscuri. Apoi, lumea s-a apucat de treab:
concurenii de pescuit iar organizatorii au dat foc la grtar. La ora 11,
concurenii s-au prezentat la cntarul care a decis clasamentul final.
Cei mai harnici i norocoi pescari sunt:
n Locul 1 Simion Costel, secia I Sudura cu 4,87 kg. pete;
n Locul 2 Moise Daniel, secia I Asamblat cu 4,25 kg. pete;
n Locul 3 Clap Dumitru, secia I Sudura cu 4 kg. pete.

Ctigtorii concursului au fost recompensai cu scule de pescuit (lansete
i mulinete), iar restul participanilor au primit cte un b de pescuit.
La final, concurenii au servit cte o porie de carne i crnai, pregtite
la grtar i i-au potolit setea cu bere, tapetnd discuiile amicale cu
ntmplri pescreti, care mai de care mai adevrate!...

Perioada 2 6 aprilie 2012 a fost dedicat activitilor
educative extracurriculare i extracolare, n cadrul
programului numit coala altfel. Acest program le-a oferit
colarilor i precolarilor lecii inedite i atractive. Ei nu au
avut parte numai de prezentri teoretice, ca n slile de
clas, ci au devenit prtai la activiti de om n toat firea.
antierul Naval Damen Galai a participat la acest program,
fiind ca o carte deschis pentru elevii unei clase a IV-a
de la coala Gimnazial nr. 28 i ai unei clase a VIII-a de
la coala Gimnazial nr. 42, Galai.
Elevii au fost nsoii de cadre didactice dar i de civa
dintre colegii notri. Rolul acestora din urm a fost de a
rspunde numeroaselor ntrebri i, n acelai timp, de a
direciona interesul vizitatorilor ctre domeniul naval. La
secia IA, unde erau prile 2, 3 i 4 din JSS, musafirii au
fost extrem de impresionai de mrimea i prestana
construciilor. Tancul petrolier de 8000 mc care tocmai s-a
lansat a reprezentat, de asemenea, un important punct de
atracie.
Toate aceste experiene noi, informaii complexe i surprize
vizuale au smuls strigte de uimire i concluzii inedite
precum aceea c realitatea bate filmul!
La final, musafirii au primit cu plcere, ca pe nite amintiri
dragi, pixuri i brri cu sigla antierului dovezi ale unei
vizite datorit creia, poate, peste ani, vor deveni navaliti
de frunte.

My beloved readers, story says that 1-st of
June was such an important day in the
Kingdom that it required a triple celebration.
Once for the little children, with plush toys.
They took their role seriously and, at night,
watch over the sweet sleep of each tiny tot.
It happened many times that the plush toys
chased away the little dream monsters
warning them not to ever walk in there, with
evil thoughts!
In other wonderful day, the Tales Palaces
doors opened. But only those familiar with
tales know the Palace location: at the Musical
Theater Nae Leonard Galati. All the children
who love fairy tales learned about this secret
A WONDERFUL STORY AT DAMEN GALATI AGAIN ON THE PODIUM
The National Conference Welding 2012 was
held during 25 27-th of April 2012 in Cluj
Napoca, the event being organized annually
by the Romanian Welding Association.
The conference also included the national
stage of the traditional contest Young
welders which has been attended by the most
skilled young welders representing companies
from all over the country. Our company
participated with two welders who obtained
excellent results:
n Decianu Marcel Hull Division IA
MMA I-st position
n Poalelungi Andreea Hull Division IA
MAG II-nd position
Unlike previous editions of this competition,
as they deserved to meet their favourite
princesses and other popular characters, full
of fun!
And they had such fun! The Tales Palace hasnt
seen such joy for long time ago! Of course,
there were some grumpy kids, just like the
Snow Whites dwarf, but we managed to
soften them up chocolate eggs and juice.
On the day the ball was held, the most
beautiful and talented youngsters in the
Kingdom gathered together. Two hours passed
like two days and two nights, full of dance,
music and joy. The big cake, divided in hundred
of pieces and the sweet and flavoured drinks,
spiced the big event. Cinderella was also
present she won the karaoke contest. We
managed to give her an award for her
beautiful voice and special beauty, then
suddenly, she was gone! She must have been
too busy at home till the return of her sisters
who, of course, were at the ball!
Summer, the most beautiful of fairies, also
showed up at Divino Club, at the evening
ball. She enjoyed the atmosphere so much
that she decided to stay there for several
months. We saw her in the smiles of those
having fun, dancing and singing.
And so our children will live happily ever after,
with the memory of so wonderful days. They
are our most precious gifts, our pride and,
after these festivities, our hope in a fairytale-
like future!

this year an important new element occurred.
Thus, instead of two categories, juniors (up to
25 years of age) and seniors (up to 35 years
of age), the new regulation requires the
maximum age of 23. This modification aims
to comply with the European regulation so
as, beginning with 2013, the winners of the
national stage will be able to participate to
the European contest scheduled to take place
next year in Essen, Germany.
Even in these conditions, Damen Shipyards
Galati was the company with best results
obtained at this year contest, respectively
one I-st position and one II-nd position. Thats
the proof that youth is not an obstacle in the
way of competence, skillfulness and passion.

n perioada 25 27 aprilie 2012, la Cluj Napoca,
s-a desfurat Conferina Naional Sudura 2012,
organizat anual de Asociaia de Sudur din
Romnia.
n cadrul conferinei a avut loc i faza naional a
concursului Tineretul sudeaz la care au participat
cei mai pricepui tineri sudori reprezentnd uniti
economice din toat ara. Din partea societii
noastre au participat doi sudori care ne-au
reprezentat cu cinste prin rezultatele obinute:
n Decianu Marcel, Sectia IA MMA - Locul I
n Poalelungi Andreea, Sectia IA MAG - Locul II
Spre deosebire de ediiile precedente ale acestui
concurs, n acest an a intervenit o noutate
Dragii mei, povestea spune c ziua de 1 iunie
era att de important n mprie, nct a fost
srbtorit de trei ori.
O dat, pentru cei foarte mici, cu jucrii din plu.
Acestea i-au luat rolul n serios i, noaptea,
vegheaz somnul dulce al fiecrui prichindel. De
multe ori s-a ntmplat s-i goneasc pe monstruleii
din vis i s le pun n vedere s nu mai calce
niciodat pe-acolo, cu gnduri rele!
n alt zi minunat, s-au deschis porile Palatului
Povetilor. Numai cunosctorii tiu c adresa lui
este la Teatrul Muzical Nae Leonard Galai. Au
aflat acest secret toi copiii care iubesc basmele
i meritau s-i cunoasc prinesele preferate dar
i personaje populare, pline de haz!
i ce s-au mai distrat! N-a mai fost demult atta
veselie n Palatul Povetilor! Desigur, mai era i
cte un suprcios, ca piticul Albei ca Zpada, dar
l-am ndulcit noi, cu un ou de ciocolat i un suc.
n ziua n care s-a desfurat balul, s-au adunat

LA DAMEN GALATI
cei mai frumoi i talentai tineri din mprie. Au
trecut dou ore ca dou zile i dou nopi, pline
de dans, muzic i veselie. Tortul, mprit n sute
de buci, sucurile dulci i aromate, au dat savoare
marelui eveniment. Cenureasa a fost i ea
pe-acolo a ctigat concursul de karaoke. Am
reuit s-i dm un premiu pentru vocea deosebit
i frumuseea ei special, apoi, gata! A disprut!
Probabil c avea mult treab acas pn s
vin surorile ei care, desigur, erau la bal!
Vara, cea mai frumoas dintre zne, i-a facut i
ea intrarea la Divino n seara balului. I-a plcut att
de mult atmosfera din club nct a ramas acolo
pentru cteva luni. Am vzut-o n zmbetele celor
care s-au distrat, au dansat i au cntat. i-aa vor
tri fericii, pn la adnci btrnei, cu amintirea
unor zile de vis, copiii notri. Ei sunt tot ceea ce
avem mai preios, mndria noastr i, dup aceste
srbtori, sperana noastr ntr-un viitor ca-n poveti!

conformarea cu regulamentul european, pentru
ca ncepnd din 2013 ctigtorii fazei naionale
s poat participa la concursul european ce se va
desfura anul viitor la Essen, Germania.
Chiar i n aceste condiii, antierul Naval Damen
Galati a fost ntreprinderea cu cele mai bune
rezultate obinute la ediia din acest an a
concursului, obinnd un loc I i un loc II. Iat
dovada c tinereea nu constitue o piedic n
calea priceperii, ndemnrii i pasiunii.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF
THE COMPANY THROUGH
ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION
The main targets of our companys development strategy are
increase of efficiency and improvement of both financial indicators
and clients satisfaction. Such targets have been translated into the
annual investment plans and professional training programs which
have been successfully implemented especially in recent years.
Which are the steps to be undertaken for a future sustainable
development? Can we use the same decisional strategy new
equipment/technologies and education to ensure the companys
sustainability? The economical dynamics in shipbuilding,
unbalanced by the increase of demand during 2006 2008 as well
as the new approaches with regard to companies development
allow us to believe that such two components only are not
sufficient to accomplish our goals. Innovation and technological
development leading to reduced energy consumptions and toxic
emissions should be ranked similarly with the previous two steps.
As far back as 2011 these two goals have been included in our
medium and long term strategy and now they can be found in
the investment plans for the coming period. Rehabilitation of
our companys sewage system and implementation of a waste
water treatment system shall result in improved parameters of
the discharged waste waters as per European standards and
elimination of future potential extra costs. Reduction of volatile
organic compounds emissions represents another goal which
determined us to make new investments purchasing distillers
for thinner recovery in parallel with using certain paints with
reduced thinner composition. In the same time, we want to
increase the number of green spots and plant trees in areas which
do not affect industrial spaces, action which complies with our
corporate responsibility policy.
Apart from such main improvement goals, each of us may
contribute to the reduction energy consumptions by eliminating
wastage, maintaining in good conditions the permanent and
temporary energetic fluid installations and by selective waste
storage. The daily activities which can be carried out in this respect
will lead not only to the improvement of economic indicators
but to developing the concept of sustainable increase through
environment protection.
Besides these investment and organizational actions, next year
we will take pride in the delivery of the first hybrid propulsion
tug, project which mixes both the innovational side with the
green development side in shipbuilding.
The attention we pay to sustainable development in which
environment protection represents a key factor as well as the
efforts of all Damen employees for maintaining and improving
the companys competitiveness entitle us to look confident to
the future of shipbuilding at mile 80 on the Danube river.

Strategia de dezvoltare a companiei noastre are ca principale obiective
creterea eficienei, mbuntirea indicatorilor financiari i a gradului de
satisfacie a clienilor. Aceste inte au fost transpuse n planurile de
investiie anuale i n programele de formare profesional pe care le-am
derulat cu success n special n ultimii ani.
Care sunt msurile pe care le putem ntreprinde pentru o dezvoltare
durabil pe viitor? Mai putem folosi aceeai strategie decizional noi
echipamente/tehnologii i educaie pentru a asigura sustenabilitatea
companiei? Dinamica economic a sectorului construciilor navale,
dezechilibrat de creterea cererii n perioada anilor 2006 2008 i noile
abordri n privina dezvoltrii companiilor ne ndreptesc s spunem
c doar aceste dou componente nu sunt suficiente pentru a ne ndeplini
obiectivele. Inovarea i dezvoltarea tehnologic ce duce la reducerea
consumului de energie i a emisiilor de noxe trebuie puse pe acelai plan
cu cele dou aciuni precedente.

investiii n derulare cumprarea unor distilatoare pentru recuperarea
diluantului, n paralel cu utilizarea unor vopsele cu coninut redus de

Pe lng aceste obiective majore de mbuntire, fiecare dintre noi poate
contribui la reducerea cantitii de energie consumat prin eliminarea
risipei, meninerea n bune condiii a instalaiilor permanente i provizorii
de fluide energetice i depozitarea selectiv a deeurilor. Activitile
zilnice pe care le putem desfura n acest sens vor duce nu numai la
mbuntirea indicatorilor economici dar i la dezvoltarea conceptului
de cretere durabil prin protejarea mediului.
Pe lng aceste msuri investiionale i organizatorice, anul viitor ne
vom putea mndri cu livrarea primului remorcher cu propulsie hibrid,
fapt ce va mbina att latura inovativ ct i cea de dezvoltare verde
a construciilor de nave.

predare a Navei de Patrulare OPV-4 Groningen
ctre Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding. Nava
este cea de-a doua construit de antierul
Naval Damen Galai, dintr-un contract de dou
nave - dar i a patra dintr-o serie construit
pentru Marina Militar olandez.
La eveniment a participat i Excelena Sa,
domnul Matthijs van Bonzel, ambasadorul
Olandei n Romnia, mpreun cu soia domniei
sale, Cristina van Bonzel-Gomez.

Keel-laying ceremony for the first two
Platform Supply Vessels, YN 1230 &1231
took place in Damen Shipyards Galati on
6-th of June 2012.
The procedure consisted in welding three
coins (a Norwegian, a Dutch and a
Romanian one) to each vessel and was
successfully performed by the Clients
representatives, Mr. Leifmar Andreassen
and Mr. Bjorn Hofset.
Damen Galati has signed a contract for
building 6 Platform Supply Vessels for the
Norwegian client World Wide Supply,
which will be operated by the Norwegian
company Remoy Management. All six
vessels are scheduled to be delivered in
2013.
LAUNCHING OF HOPPER
DREDGER 750 MEOTIDA
Friday, 11-th of May 2012 was a real summer
day and also a perfect day for launching
of Hopper Dredger Meotida, YN 1224.
A day full of excitement also for the Lady
Sponsor, Mrs. Alla Kravchenko, Financial
Director and Mr. Oleksandr Nefodov, Chief
of Fleet Department, representatives of the
client. Built for Mariupol Sea Commercial
Port of Ukraine, this dredger was set into
fabrication in August 2011 and will be
delivered in August 2012. With a length of
59,20 m. and breadth of 11,00 m., Meotida
is fully automatic and can reach a maximum
speed of 9,5 knots.

Last Wednesday, 16-th of May, the
handover ceremony was performed for
the OPV-4 Groningen from Damen
Shipyards Galati to Damen Schelde Naval
Shipbuilding. The vessel is the second one
built by Damen Shipyards Galati from a
contract of two but is the fourth in line
of the series to be built for the Dutch
Navy. The ceremony was attended by
His Excellence, Mr. Matthijs van Bonzel,
Ambassador of the Kingdom of the
Netherlands in Romania together with his
spouse Mrs. Cristina van Bonzel-Gomez.

Vineri, 11 mai, ntr-o zi autentic de var, a
avut loc lansarea drgii Meotida comanda
nr. 1224. Cu o lungime de 59,20 m. i o lime
de 11,00 m., Meotida este complet
automatizat i poate atinge o vitez maxim
de 9,5 noduri.
Naa navei, Alla Kravchenko, director financiar
dar i Oleksandr Nefodov, eful flotei, ambii
reprezentani ai clientului, au avut mari emoii.
Lansat n fabricaie n august 2011 i construit
pentru Portul Maritim Comercial Mariupol din
Ucraina, aceast drag urmeaz a fi livrat n
luna august a acestui an.

I have been fond of ship modeling, activity which I carried out
at the Pioneers Club. My first ship model was equipped with
propeller and electric motor and powered by a battery. At that
time, the remote control hasnt been invented yet, but nevertheless
it was great!
I continued my studies at Vasile Alecsandri High School at the
special physics class, next step being the Faculty of Mechanical
Sciences, Naval Architecture section, which I graduated in 1979.
This year represented the beginning of my career as naval
architect in Galati shipyard.
I chose to work with the Hull Engineering Team tool design and
upgrading, together with big names, such as: Marinescu and
Eniceicu, engineers whom I had always something to learn from.
In short time I managed to know everything in the shipyard, all
technologies and technological flows specific in shipbuilding. I
have always searched for new solutions, new technologies, tools,
devices and equipment which can be used in the shipyard. It was
a period of accumulation with many satisfactions and professional
achievements. More than 40 patents and one invention patent, all
successfully applied in the shipyard, are testimonies in this respect.
For a quite long time, until 1994, in parallel with my work here
in the shipyard, Ive been collaborator to the Naval Architecture
If we could go back in time, as simple observers, we would
denitely say that only Danube is the same in Galati people
and places have changed. There are no exceptions, not even
mister Marian Mihalache, the main character in our interview
from this issue of DSGa newsletter.
Marian Mihalache is 58 years old, married and has one child.
He is senior ship coordinator within the Tug & Workboats Ship
Coordination Department.
A simple person who knows what he wants from life and who, as
stated by himself, learns every day something new from his job.
He came into focus in shipbuilding field due to his perseverance
and professionalism.
How did your story begin? When did you realize that you want
a career in shipbuilding?
No one is born learned, so much the more a shipbuilder! There
were many factors which determined me to make this choice.
Moreover, it seems to be a family tradition: my father dedicated
himself to this profession as worker in the shipyard and my brother
also worked here as trial mechanical engineer. I have graduated
from School No. 4, formerly located right on the Danube bank,
somewhere on Portului Street where Olt block of flats lies today.
I dwelled in the town valley area, close to the school and Danube
River which always attracted us. The harbors bustling activity was
fascinating for us, children berths were always full of merchant
ships, with many others waiting to be anchored and ready to
take their place; ships arriving at the quay, ships leaving the quay,
sounding howlers, smoke from the steam engines, sailors of all
nationalities, border guards overseeing access on board, flags
indicating the ships origin. As a little boy, everything that
happened in those places where almost nothing can be seen
nowadays attracted me.
MARIAN MIHALACHE: ROUTINE IS OVERCOME WITH CREATIVITY!
pleasure the period when I was coordinating the ship repairs
activity while, in the same time, the basis for building workboats
and tugs were laid. It was the tugs pioneering. I started with a
small team with no experience in building tug and workboats
and without any logistics but full of enthusiasm and devotion.
The results were immediate: if we consider the tugs built in our
shipyard till now, the total number includes 110 deliveries, and
many of them bear my signature.
Ive been a lucky man to work with this wonderful team for such
a long time!
What is your message for our readers?
When you realize that your work does not differ at all from the
others and that you are on the road to a dull life with endlessly
repeated moments, lacking interest and satisfactions but filled
with stress and discontents, then it is time to take an important
decision and choose the best way for you, maximize your abilities
and fight in order to be satisfied with what you do!

NVINGE PRIN CREATIVITATE!
Dac ne-am putea ntoarce n timp, ca nite observatori, am putea
afirma cu trie c la Galai doar Dunrea a rmas aceeai oamenii
i locurile s-au schimbat. Nimeni nu face excepie, nici mcar
domnul Marian Mihalache, protagonistul interviului nostru de la
aceast ediie a revistei.
Marian Mihalache are 58 de ani, este cstorit i are un singur copil. El
este coordonator de nav senior n cadrul Serviciului de Coordonare
Remorchere i Ambarcaiuni. Este o persoan simpl, care tie ce
vrea de la via i care, dup cum chiar dumnealui spune, nva n
fiecare zi ceva nou din meseria lui. S-a impus n domeniul naval datorit
perseverenei i profesionalismului dovedit.
Cum a nceput povestea dumneavoastr? Cnd v-ai dat seama c
dorii s v construii o carier n domeniul naval?
Nimeni nu s-a nscut nvat, cu att mai mult navalist ! Au fost muli
factori care m-au determinat s fac aceast alegere. n plus, se pare c
este o tradiie de familie: tatl meu s-a dedicat ntru totul acestei profesii,
fiind muncitor n antierul glean, iar fratele meu a lucrat i el aici ca
inginer mecanic de probe. Am fcut studiile gimnaziale la coala Nr. 4,
amplasat chiar pe malul Dunrii, undeva pe strada Portului, unde astzi
este blocul Olt. Am locuit pe valea oraului, aproape de coal i de
Dunre, care ne-a atras mereu. Activitatea trepidant din port era
fascinant pentru noi, copiii - danele erau ntotdeauna pline de nave
comerciale i multe ateptau la ancor gata s le ia locul; nave care
soseau la cheu, nave care plecau, sunet de siren, mult fum de la
mainile cu abur, marinari de toate naiile, grniceri care supravegheau
accesul la nave, pavilioane care indicau proveniena navelor. Eram atras
de mic de tot ce se ntmpla atunci, n acele locuri unde astzi nu mai
este aproape nimic.
Am fost un pasionat al navomodelismului, activitate pe care am
desfurat-o la Casa Pionierului. Primul navomodel a fost echipat cu
elice i motor electric, alimentat cu o baterie. Pe vremea aceea nu se

with students, part of my knowledge which I gained in all those
years.
What does being a shipbuilder mean to you?
Being shipbuilder means, above all: passion, perseverance,
knowledge and professionalism. It is something complex, which
cannot be created without a certain education in this respect.
I think every naval architects dream is to achieve a perfect mix
between accumulations and personal contributions. What is
important, after the educational stage, is to continue to accumulate
usefully, always considering how to apply what you learned. I
am convinced it is very important to devote yourself entirely to
this profession, because there are no half measures in this.
A ship can be compared to a child: is born, is carefully nurtured
according to certain rules, is offered all conditions to grow up
in harmony, is always in the spotlight, and when grown-up and
ready to leave, gives us all satisfactions in the world.
Is routine present in your activity?
No routine at all. The concern for invention innovation always
defined me. Without any false modesty, I am one of the most
enthusiasts in drawing up proposals for improving quality and
enhance projects efficiency. I often leave my imagination to work,
look always for something new which may offer the ship increased
performance, new technical solutions and less production costs.
For me, this is a great thing. I encourage new generation to act
this way, fructifying the chance to express their own ideas and
new technical and economic options. Routine is overcome with
creativity!
We all make compromises to get where we want. What
compromises did you have to do during your career?
First of all, I would like to underline that money is not the issue
which determined me to choose the work which I now carry out.
As a rule, maximum 15% of what you do in life you really like;
the rest represents what you must do. Ideally is that you enjoy
what you have to do! If I had to name a compromise which I did,
well, it would be my decision to stay in the country, faithful to the
same company being well known that salaries are much higher
abroad. I think that ship coordination, through its complexity and
required responsibilities should be more and more appreciated,
in all aspects. The truth is that many of my younger colleagues
took the given opportunities and left this shipyard where,
practically, they set the basis for their professional careers.
How would you describe yourself in a few words?
I am understanding, patient but in the same time very demanding.
I always appreciate other peoples involvement and quality things.
I cannot overlook certain shortcomings, failures or mistakes which
I try to solve immediately, together with those around me, as to
eliminate any negative impact or complaints which may arise
later. I like to teach young people although, unfortunately, only
few are willing today to undertake this task. I am glad that I
managed to train young shipbuilders who, in time, showed me
their gratitude coming from some of the farthest places in the
world, from where they work now. What is important in life is to
be willing to know and the path will then open for you.
Which is your most important professional achievement until now?
Although it has been more than 12 years ago, I remember with

Mi-am continuat studiile la Liceul Vasile Alecsandri la clasa special de
fizic, urmtorul pas fiind Facultatea de Mecanic, secia Nave, pe care
am absolvit-o n anul 1979. Acest an a marcat nceputul carierei mele
de inginer navalist n antierul Naval Galati.
Am ales s lucrez n colectivul Proiectare Corp grupa proiectare
SDV-uri i modernizri, alturi de nume mari, precum: Marinescu i
Eniceicu, ingineri de la care am avut mereu ce nva.
n scurt timp am reuit s cunosc tot antierul, toate tehnologiile i
fluxurile tehnologice specifice construciilor navale. Am cutat ntotdeauna
soluii noi, tehnologii noi, scule, dispozitive, echipamente care s fie
utilizate in antier. A fost o perioad de acumulri cu multe satisfacii i
mpliniri profesionale. Stau mrturie n acest sens, cele peste 40 de
brevete de inovaii i unul de invenie, aplicate cu succes n antier.
O bun bucat de vreme, pn n 1994, n paralel cu activitatea
desfurat aici, am fost i colaborator al Facultii de Nave din Galai
disciplina rezistena materialelor i instalaii navale de bord. Astfel, am
avut satisfacia c pot mprti studenilor o parte din cunotinele
dobndite n toi acei ani.
Ce nseamn pentru dumneavoastr a fi navalist?
A fi navalist, nainte de toate, nseamn: pasiune, perseveren,

It happens that we sometimes look ironically to those who
show ostentatiously their bodies worked in the gym, being
tempted to make a common association between more muscles
and less mind.
But, for those who chose sport as a way of life, the strong
connection between physical effort and healthy thinking is no
longer a surprise; maintaining a harmonious human brain is only
possible when body is trained and blood set into motion.
Recent studies indicate that proportion of older adults in the
world is continuously increasing. According to statistics, in ten
years, this category will represent 20% of the Romanian population.
Physical efforts connected to the psychical activity eliminate some
of the brain damages and slow the aging process. Fitness practiced
constantly and even moderately reduces risk of death related to
cardio-vascular condition and restores brain volume losses which
occur in ones lifetime. Intensive physical activity reduces risk of
diseases and supports neurons health.
Here are the recommendations of the world organization for
improving health through physical activity:
n at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity
during the week or at least 75 minutes of high intensity activity
during one week or a combination similar to the two types
of activities;
n activities should be carried out in rounds of minimum 10
minutes;
n for extra health benefits, adults should increase moderate
physical activities to 300 minutes per week or 150 minutes
for high intensity activities or to combine the two types of
activities;
n activities for muscle strengthening involving major muscle
groups should be carried out at least two times per week.

Getting involved in activities which force us to think, stay fit and
have a social life, helps us to obtain a positive attitude and
keep ourselves healthy and smart as we grow older.

Ultimele studii arat c, pe glob, proporia de aduli vrstnici este n
continu cretere. Conform statisticilor, peste zece ani, 20% din populaia
Romniei va fi format din aceast categorie.
Activitatea fizic, mpletit cu cea psihic, anuleaz unele dintre
degradrile cerebrale i ncetinete procesul de mbtrnire. Micarea,
constant i chiar moderat, reduce riscul decesului legat de problemele
cardiovasculare i restabilete pierderile de volum ale creierului care
apar pe parcursul existenei. Activitatea fizic intens reduce riscul de
boli i susine sntatea neuronilor.

Iat care sunt recomandrile organizaiei mondiale pentru mbuntirea
sntii prin activitate fizic :

folos, gndind mereu cum s pui n practic cele nvate. Am convingerea
c este foarte important s te dedici ntru totul acestei profesii, deoarece
jumti de msur nu exist.
Un vapor l pot compara cu un copil: se nate, se cldete cu grij dup
anumite reguli, i se ofer toate condiiile s creasc n armonie, este
mereu n centrul ateniei, iar atunci cnd este mare i gata de plecare,
ne ofer toate satisfaciile.
Exist rutin n activitatea pe care o desfurai?
Nici vorb de rutin. Preocuparea pentru inventic inovaie m-a
caracterizat ntotdeauna. Fr fals modestie, sunt unul dintre cei mai
mptimii n formularea propunerilor pentru mbuntirea calitii i
eficientizarea proiectelor. De multe ori las imaginaia s lucreze, caut
mereu ceva nou care s ofere navei caliti sporite, soluii tehnice noi i
costuri de producie ct mai reduse.
Pentru mine, este un lucru extraordinar. ncurajez noua generaie s
acioneze n acest sens, fructificnd ansa de a-i exprima propriile idei
i noile opiuni tehnice i economice. Rutina se nvinge prin creativitate!
Cu toii facem compromisuri pentru a ajunge acolo unde ne dorim. Ce
compromisuri ai fost nevoit s facei pe parcursul carierei?
Mai nti, vreau sa menionez c nu factorul materiala determinat alegerea
activitii pe care o desfor acum. De regul, n via, cel mult 15% faci
ceea ce-i place; restul reprezint ceea ce trebuie s faci. Ideal este ca,
ceea ce trebuie s faci s i i plac! Dac ar fi s numesc un compromis
pe care l-am fcut, ei bine, ar fi acela de a rmne n ar, fidel aceleiai
companii - tiut fiind faptul c, n afar, salariile sunt cu mult mai mari.
Cred c activitatea de coordonare nave, prin complexitatea ei i prin
responsabilitile ce le implic, ar trebui apreciat mult mai mult, sub
toate aspectele. Adevrul este c, muli din colegii mei mai tineri i-au
valorificat ansa i s-au desprins de antier unde, practic, s-au format
profesional.
Cum v-ai caracteriza n cteva cuvinte?
Sunt nelegtor, rbdtor, dar n acelai timp i foarte exigent. Apreciez
ntotdeauna implicarea celor din jur i lucrurile de calitate. Nu trec cu
vederea anumite neajunsuri, eecuri sau greeli pe care ncerc s le
rezolv imediat, mpreun cu cei din jurul meu, astfel nct s elimin
impactul negativ sau nemulumirile care pot aprea mai trziu. mi place
s-i nv pe cei tineri, dei, din pcate, nu mai sunt muli care cupleaz
la acest deziderat. Sunt bucuros c am reuit s formez tineri navaliti
care peste timp m-au rspltit cu mulumiri, venite din cele mai
ndeprtate locuri, de acolo de unde lucreaz ei acum. Important n via
este s vrei s cunoti i calea i se va deschide.
Care este cea mai importanta realizare profesional de pn acum?
Cu plcere, dei au trecut mai bine de 12 ani de atunci, mi aduc aminte
de momentul n care coordonam activitatea de reparaii nave i, n
acelai timp, se puneau bazele activitii de construcie a navelor mici
i a remorcherelor. Era pionieratul n remorchere. Am pornit cu un colectiv
restrns, fr experien n domeniul navelor mici, neavnd logistica
necesar, dar cu mult curaj i druire. Rezultatele nu au ntrziat s
apar: dac ne gndim la numrul de remorchere fabricate n antierul
nostru pn astzi, ajungem la impresionanta cifr de 110 nave livrate,
iar multe dintre ele mi poart amprenta. Sunt un om norocos pentru
c lucrez de atta vreme n acest colectiv minunat!
Care este mesajul dumneavoastr pentru cititorii revistei noastre?
Atunci cnd realizezi c activitatea ta nu se deosebete cu nimic de a
altora i c eti pe drumul spre o via monoton cu momente care se
repet la nesfrit, lipsit de interes, fr satisfacii, cu stres i
nemulumiri, este timpul s iei o decizie important n via i s alegi
calea optim pentru tine, s valorifici la maxim calitile pe care le ai,
s lupi pentru a fi mulumit de ceea ce faci!
