To configure a static client on the ICS private network, you use the following general

steps:
Add a valid ICS private IP address to the client.
Configure the default gateway to be !".#$.%..
Configure the preferred &'S server to be !".#$.%..
Add (S)*(+.'+T as the &'S suffi, on the client.
Add an entry for the client to the )osts file on the -indows .P/based ICS
host, using client_name.(S)*(+.'+T as the na0e.
These steps are described in detail later in this article.
-indows .P ICS uses the private network of !".#$.%., to dyna0ically assign
addresses to clients. In addition, the ICS host keeps track of the na0es of internal
clients to facilitate na0e resolution. The re0ainder of this article describes the
process of statically configuring an ICS client, while taking these two factors into
account.

Configuring the IP Address
-hen you select an address for the statically configured internal host, it is a good
idea to pick an address that has not already been assigned to a client. )owever, when
ICS assigns an IP address, -indows .P sends an Address 2esolution Protocol 3A2P4
broadcast to 0ake sure that the address is not already in use on the network. If
-indows .P receives a reply to the A2P broadcast, a new address is selected and the
process starts again. Therefore, if you choose an address that is already in use on the
network, it creates a te0porary proble0 on the network that should be resolved the
ne,t ti0e the conflicting client re5uests an IP address. The address that you select for
the statically configured client 0ust be on the !".#$.%., network 3for e,a0ple,
!".#$.%.%%4. The only three addresses on the network that you cannot use are
!".#$.%.% 3the network address4, !".#$.%. 3the ICS host4, and !".#$.%."66 3the
broadcast address4. 7alid address range fro0 !".#$.%." through !".#$.%."68.

Configuring the Default Gateway, DNS, and Host Name
ICS clients 0ust be configured to use the ICS host for their default gateway and
&'S server. This causes the ICS host to act as a gateway to the Internet for the client,
and takes care of resolving na0es for the client. -ith -indows .P ICS, the internal
interface that is used by ICS always has an address of !".#$.%.. Therefore, you
0ust configure the static clients to use this address for &o0ain 'a0e Syste0 3&'S4
and &yna0ic )ost Configuration Protocol 3&)CP4 re5uests.
-indows .P ICS also always uses a do0ain na0e of (S)*(+.'+T. Therefore, to
specify a fully 5ualified host na0e for a client, you 0ust use the client co0puter na0e
followed by 9.(S)*(+.'+T9. :or e,a0ple, 9C*(P;T+2.(S)*(+.'+T9 is
the fully 5ualified na0e of an internal client with a na0e of C*(P;T+2.
To configure a static client, use the following steps.
NOTE: This article assu0es that the client co0puter is running -indows .P. The
sa0e ob<ectives no 0atter which operating syste0 is running on the client, but the
actual process 0ay differ.
. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Networ and Internet Conne!tions,
and then click Networ Conne!tions.
". 2ight/click the network connection that is connected to the private ICS
network, and then click Pro"erties.
=. *n the General tab, click Internet Proto!ol #TCP$IP% in the This
!onne!tion uses the following items list, and then click Pro"erties.
8. *n the General tab, click &se the following IP address. Configure the
entries as follows:
o IP Address: The IP address you chose for this client 3for e,a0ple,
!".#$.%.%%4.
o Su'net (as: "66."66."66.%
o Default Gateway: !".#$.%.
o Click &se the following DNS ser)er addresses, and then type
!".#$.%. in the Preferred DNS ser)er bo,.
6. Click Ad)an!ed, and then click the DNS tab.
#. In the DNS suffi* for this !onne!tion bo,, type (S)*(+.'+T.
>. Click O+.
$. Click O+.
(ake note of the co0puter?s na0e for na0e/resolution purposes:
. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performan!e and (aintenan!e, and
then click System.
". Click the Com"uter Name tab.
=. 'ote the entry on the 9:ull co0puter na0e9 line.
:or the purposes of this article, the co0puter na0e includes everything up to,
but not including, the first period in the na0e that is listed on the 9:ull
co0puter na0e9 line. :or e,a0ple, if 9C*(P;T+2.9 is listed, the co0puter
na0e is C*(P;T+2 3with no period4.
8. Close all open dialog bo,es.

Adding Stati! Clients to the Hosts ,ile
To co0plete the static configuration, lest each static client in the )osts file on the
ICS host. The )osts file helps to speed up na0e resolution and prevents unnecessary
5ueries fro0 being sent to &'S servers on the Internet. :or a dial/up connection to
the Internet, adding static clients to the )osts file helps to 0ini0i@e the traffic that
causes the Internet connection to be dialed.
. *n the -indows .P/based ICS host co0puter, start -indows +,plorer, and
open the following folder:
ASyste02ootABSyste0="B&riversB+tc
". This folder contains two files of which you should be aware. The )osts.ics file
is used by ICS to store infor0ation about dyna0ically configured clients.
Avoid 0aking changes to this file to prevent the loss of connectivity or data.
The )osts file 3with no file na0e e,tension4 is the file to which you add
infor0ation about statically configured clients. 2ight/click the Hosts file, and
then click O"en. Click Sele!t the "rogram from a list, and then click O+.
Click Note"ad in the list of progra0s, and then click O+. 'otepad starts and
displays the contents of the )osts file.
=. The file will probably contain only an 9">.%.%. localhost9 entry. (ove the
insertion point to the first blank line after the last entry.
8. :ollowing the sa0e 0odel as the previous entry, first type the IP address of
the statically configured client, press the TA1 key, and then type the fully
5ualified co0puter na0e. :or e,a0ple, if the IP address of the statically
configured client is !".#$.%.%% and the na0e of the host is C*(P;T+2,
type this entry:
!".#$.%.%% C*(P;T+2.(S)*(+.'+T
Again, note that a tab character separates the IP address and na0e.
6. (ake sure that there are two blank lines after the last entry by pressing
+'T+2 twice. Save the file, and then 5uit 'otepad.
This co0pletes the configuration to allow the statically configured client to participate
on the ICS network.
