Some people think that we owe pure
mathematics to Pythagoras. He established
a school at croton in southern Italy around
530 B.C. At the school he practiced number-
worship to show that each number has its
own meaning. Pythagoras Theorem and the
properties of right-angled triangles, looks to
be the most ancient and widespread
mathematical development after basic
arithmetic and geometry. The holiest
number of all was "tetractys" or ten, a
triangular number composed of the sum of
one, two, three and four. Pythagoras was so
exited about his discovery that he though
that the whole universe was based on
numbers. Pythagoras is a true
mathematician.
Pythagoras found an amazing fact about
triangles: If the triangle had a right angle
(90) and you made a square on each of the
three sides of the triangle, then the biggest
square had the exact same area as the other
two squares combined. It is called
"Pythagorean Theorem" and can be written
in one short equation: a + b = c . C is the
longest side of the triangle, a and b are the
other sides. The longest side is called the
hypotenuse, and the other sides are the
legs. Example: A 3, 4, and 5 triangle has a
right angle in it. Let's check if the areas
are the same: 3
2
+ 4
2
= 5
2
Calculating this
becomes: 9 + 16 = 25. Yes this is correct it
works perfectly.
